Bylaw 2.11
SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES
 The School Board places a high priority on the importance of a planned andcontinuing program of high quality professional development
 
education for itsmembers. The central purpose of the program is to enhance the quality andeffectiveness of public school governance in our community. The School Boardshall plan specific in-service activities designed to assist School Board membersin their efforts to improve their skills as members of a policy-making body; toexpand their knowledge about trends, issues, and new ideas affecting theeducational activities of the local schools; and, to deepen their insights into thenature of leadership in a modern democratic society.For new School Board members, participation includes an orientation providedby the Superintendent with an overview of the school division and itsinstructional program, finances, and organizational structure and the duties,obligations and responsibilities of the School Board. School Board members will participate annually in at least one high-qualityprofessional development activities at the state, local, or national levels ongovernance, including but not limited to, personnel, policies and practices;curriculum and instruction; use of data in planning and decision making; andcurrent issues in education.Funds shall be budgeted annually to support this program. Individual SchoolBoard members shall be reimbursed for out-of-pocket costs incurred throughparticipation in approved activities. The public shall be kept informed about theSchool Board's continuing professional development
 
educational activities. The School Board approves
 
the following as the kinds of activities and servicesappropriate for implementing this policy:1. Participation in School Board conferences, workshops and conventionsconducted by the Virginia and the National School Boards Associationswithin the Commonwealth or in the Washington DC metropolitan area.
 
2. Division-sponsored training sessions for School Board members.Attendance in activities sponsored by other organizations or held outside theCommonwealth or Washington Metropolitan area and subscriptions topublications addressed to the concerns of School Board members
