Correcting the Creationist

Important question
Is creationism a science? Many creationists claim that it is. In fact, creationists spread their beliefs under the general heading "CreationScience". But is creationism
really
a science? This article is an attempt toanswer that question.Creationists require that we accept the bible as literally true. This is to saythat the bible must be accepted through
faith.
On the contrary, scientifictheories are not accepted through faith. They are always under scrutinyand are constantly subjected to attempts at falsification. The idea that ascientific theory must be falsifiable in principle is crucial to thedevelopment of science. If scientific theories were not subject to attemptsat falsification they would never change (or evolve) because people wouldnot bother questioning their accuracy. But creationists believe that theirclaims -- or rather, the claims of the bible -- are immune to attempts atfalsification. This means that their ideas can never change and cannot bemodified in light of new evidence. They are set in stone, unchanging forall time. In this way creationism cannot be considered to be a science.

Science is Not a Religion
Creationists claim that the bible should not be questioned or subject toany real scrutiny. For a creationist, the words of the bible are literal truthsthat must be accepted, not through reason, but through
faith
. Given therequirement of faith, it is difficult to see how creationists can sensiblyassert that their study of the bible and creation is a
scientific
endeavor.Science, unlike religion, is based on asking questions and scrutinizingevidence and hypotheses. When challenged on this, many creationistsaccuse scientists of having faith in their theories, or faith that science canexplain all the mysteries of the universe. For the creationist, science is just another religion -- not the correct religion, but a religion nonetheless. This type of accusation implies a misunderstanding of science. To have faith in something, one must accept that thing to be true with noevidence; but this is not the way science works. Indeed, no scientist

should have "faith". It would not be rational for a scientist to simplybelieve by faith that science is always right. This is because there are somany instances in which scientific theories have been shown to be wrong.Science is in a constant state of evolution. Accepted theories of the pasthave been refined and changed giving us a more precise world-view. Ascience that does not change and can not be questioned would notactually be science. This is because one of the defining features of scienceis its openness to refinement in the light of new data.On the other hand, the prophecies and claims of the bible can never beconsidered scientific because they require people's acceptance with noquestion. There is no room for development of the bible's claims in light of new evidence. If someone questions the accuracy of a prediction in thebible, the answer is usually an unsatisfactory cover-up such as "... wehave misunderstood..." or "... the dates are inaccurate..." or "... God mayhave changed his mind..."Imagine how difficult it would be to understand the world if scienceworked that way. Suppose that someone challenged Newton's law of gravity by pointing to the anomalous orbit of Mercury and scientistsresponded by saying
"Oh, that's alright ... the law of gravity doesn't  ALWAYS work ... we don't know why it doesn't always work, but it could be that we are misunderstanding God's intentions. What's important isthat we have faith in Newton's theory and continue to accept it
." If thisanswer were accepted, Einstein's theory of gravity would never have hada chance despite the fact that it
does
predict the strange orbit of Mercury.

Do Predictions make Science?
One of the reasons the creationist believes that a study of the bible isscientific is because it makes predictions about the future. Thesepredictions are contained in the Book of Revelations and can, presumably,be tested for accuracy by waiting for the events to occur. Many Christiansbelieve that some of the predictions made in the revelations have alreadyoccurred, thus proving its accuracy. A popular example concerns theso-called "mark of the beast". The revelations state that at some point intime, everyone on Earth will receive a mark on either their hand or theirforehead. According to the passage, the mark will be essential for peopleto buy and sell goods and exchange services. People who believe theaccuracy of this prediction claim that it is already coming true. Theybelieve the prediction refers to "smart-card" technology. Smart-cards arelike credit cards that contain micro-chips which hold information abouttheir user's bank accounts, medical status, employment record, andpersonal details. It is interesting technology that is not widely used as yet.In the future, however, it is conceivable that people will need to be issuedwith smart-cards in order buy products and generally participate in

society. On the surface it seems to be the case that the bible has made aprediction that was tested and verified. But do the existence of smart-cards really verify the bible's claims? Sadly for the creationist theanswer is "no". The reference to the mark of the beast can be interpretedin many different ways. It is likely that throughout history people havemade a variety of interpretations that are based on what is going on atthe time. The idea that no-one can buy or sell without the mark of a beastcould be interpreted as meaning that bartering will no longer exist andpeople need to use money. Or it could be interpreted as meaning peopleneed to be citizens of a nation to live and work in that nation. Or it couldbe interpreted as people needing bank accounts or ATM cards. In a fewyears people may interpret it as meaning goods and services will only beavailable over the internet. Who knows? All these possibilities are equallyplausible and since they all make sense it is impossible to tell what theprediction means. The prediction could be taken to mean just aboutanything, and as such it can never be verified.

Falsifying the word of God
One of the requirements of science is that is satisfies the "falsifiability"principle. This means that for a theory to be scientific it has to have thepossibility of falsification because without such, it is trivial and tells usnothing useful. Here are a few examples of assertions that are falsifiable:1. It never rains on Wednesdays2. All substances expand when heated3. Objects fall towards the Earth when released within Earth'sgravitational field. The first assertion can be falsified by simply making several observationsof Wednesday's weather. If it rains one Wednesday, then we can say thatthe assertion has been falsified. The second claim can be falsified byfinding a substance that does
not
expand when heated. As it turns out, heating ice until it melts can falsify this assertion. Assertion 3 is true asfar as we know, however it is falsifiable
in principle
. It is logically possiblethat a brick may fall upwards when released, its just that so far this hasnever happened. If it did happen on one occasion, then we would discoveran inconsistency in gravitational theory and scientists would then work tomake our understanding more complete. In the meantime, however, everytime we watch a brick fall to the ground our confidence in gravitationaltheory is strengthened. This is how science works and progresses. Now,consider the following assertions:

Not sure if I agree with your points. I'd be interested in some academic references for the information you're putting forward, obataladance. I have never read anything about sacrifice being related to power in blood. All sources indicate the origin of sacrifice being the appeasement of the gods. The library of alexandria contained a great deal of scientific knowledge, and it was burned down by th

Hello Brent..i will send u some links when i will have some free time but i suggest u to read about Azkhenazis Jews blood rituals also the Voodoo rituals where neurotoxins played an important role. I have done some research about blood rituals, and the use of biological natural weapons throughout history. The human imagination is limitless.Regards.Thanks for u answers.

Spiritual hierarchies have always existed ( The Aztecs had the Colmec (school for the religious, rich ) ) and the Calpulli ( for the communs ) but modern religion was a creation of Rome when highjacking all the myths all the world.Myths as dance, food and costumes were meant to preserve.Modern sciences is a new religion coz at the service of a elite hidding real knowledge despite few honest guys.

Unfortunately sciences have become the new religion where man once again feels at the center, like a god who can modifiy nature and all living beings. Many serious objectives scientists have been ridiculized, ostracized or eliminated. We are back into a dark age where any sign of commun sense can be considered heretic. Evolutionism as much as creationism are the two sides of the same coin.I more hi

Human sacrifices were much more retaled to the power of some substance founded in the composition of blood which have been proved. The elites loved to drink blood in some places and sacrifcies were an easy way to get rid off those who knew to much.. .The ancients knew more than what is portrayed, this why libraries as Alexandrie were burned.

Most of hidden knowledge in the hands of few are our ancesters..The Mayans didnt know about the universe ?? ..The greeks used to build libraries whiles other burned them..personality traits ( metaphores ) were part of the poetic way to protect knowledge. In the greek mythology every planet have a name of a god but still it was refered to a planet..Just few who speak ancient greek can decode it.

Here's an example of an ancient interpretation of the world: Sometimes when people are angry, they cause damage. Volcanoes cause damage, therefore the volcano must be angry. Maybe there is a volcano god. Men like attractive women, so maybe we can appease volcano god by giving it a nice looking female...hence human sacrifice. Sometimes the volcano stops erupting, therefore human sacrifice works.

Brent Silby replied:

Our ancestors did not know much about the universe, they were pre-science. They explained natural phenomena in terms of personality traits, which is where the idea of gods came from. Science is not religion, because it is not faith based. It is based on evidence, and testable theory. Religious ideas cannot be tested because they involve the super-natural, which is untestable.
