Of 'Sound' Sailing Advice

One of the suggestions frequently made by bottom paint manufacturers is to apply a ·signal· coat of a : contrasting color beneath the final

. coats to act as a telltale for repainting of mUlti-season copolymer paints. This idea is interesting but it doesn't always work out. Por one reason, the second coat doesn't always hide the first coat. For another, some paints dissolve the first coat and mix with it. A red signal coat with a white final could yield two coats of shocking pink 1 Some brands have excellent hiding power, though, and the idea has merit in that case.

An alternative concept, however, is to let the gelcoat be your ·signal· coat; that's how we did it years ago. But what if you'd like a white bottom over a white gelcoat? Assuming you've stripped down to the gelcoat, it probably would be wise to apply one of the new epoxy barrier paints to inhibit moisture absorption and potential blistering. Such epoxies may have ·color" to them -- gray, tan, etc. Now there's your signal coat. If it's white, add a very small amount of tint to the last epoxy coat, and that's it. When you begin to see that tinted color, your copolymer's gone.

Irwin Palmer

[Editor's Note: At this. writing, it appears that copolymers will be removed from the market. Let's see what the paint manufacturers develop instead. The· signal coat concept, however, remains valid.]
