THE QUARTER DECK The Ladies Day Races of the 1981 season were @ great success. 16 boats participated, which is three times the previous number. It is won- derful to see more of our lovely ladies out on the ‘quarterdeck'. To those captains whose mates have not yet taken command, T have some suggestions which Tina and I have found create confidence at the helm. At every opportunity when doing any unusual manoeuvre, such as picking up a mooring under sail, coming up to a raft, sailing out an an- chor or laying a difficult mark, Tina will rake the helm, especially if I already have “perience doing the job. This practice gives sth of us confidence in each other, which is the key to sharing command, No.7 A Publication of The Masthead Cove Yacht Club THE DECK LOG” September 1980 It is also important to avoid "testing" your mate. No one who is learning to do something as complex as sailing can do so in an emergen- ey or under the stress of "proving" oneself. The sea provides more than enough tests, Why should we add to them? I have noticed that skippers swear more and yell more loudly in inverse ratio to their confidence and knowledge. The next time you see a captain yelling at his or her crew, you can be sure that the fault is the captain's. There is no excuse on a boat for the skip- per to get excited. We have for a number of years sailed in two hour watches, one of us relaxing or navigat- ing while the other steers The last suggestion I have is: prepare your boat and crew. Tacking, gybing, anchoring, rafting, docking all require preparation. Firet, review the procedure and signals, step by etep. Then review the boat: are sheets ready to run?...bumpers set at the right height?...ete. Then, ask..."Are you ready?". Finally...do not proceed if anyone is not ready. There is alvays time to review. There is never time to correct a problem once the boat is committed. I hope we see more and more participation in our marvelous sport by mates and children. Be- Lieve me, the satisfaction of sailing well is more that doubled when you sail with confi- dence in your mate. Roger Van Ghent Note: due to unavailability of moorings} and slips in Stratford and good seats for the Shakespeare theatre, the Club sponsored cruise has been cancelled over Labor Day weekend. 1981.
