This document explains how to organize a (gamble-)pool for the FIFA Worldcup Soccer 2010 (WC2010) with
Match!

Match!-vocabulary

• player: a national team , e.g. Netherlands

• sub-player: a person of a team, e.g. 'van Nistelrooy' (belongs to player ‘Netherlands’)
• group: in WC2010 there are 8 groups, A-H, each with 4 players.
• virtual match: a match in a final-round for which the (virtual) players are not known yet, but are indicated by
variables, like e.g. A1-B2 (match in phase 2 of WC210 (1/8-Finals) between winner of group A and nr.2 of
group B)

Points-system

< NB: For admin of pool: if you change the (default) parameter-values for the gamble-points in Match!, change
the values in this paragraph!! >

Points will be given to the following criteria:

• Correct toto for match (= win/draw/loss): 2 points
• Correct score for match (goals made by player A and B): 1 point
• Correct player for virtual match: 1 point per player, so max. 2 points for a match
• Correct end-ranking player:
• 16 points for winner WC2010, with end-ranking 1
• 8 points for player with end-ranking 2
• 4 points for player with end-ranking 3
• 2 points for player with end-ranking 4
NB: In the demo-version of Match, there is a test-competition (with id 81) for WC2010, which is like a
simulation of WC2010 in which all matches are played, so the winner of WC2010 is known, see Figuur 1:
WC2010 simulation, phase 1 (Qualification/Group-round) and Figuur 2: WC2010 simulation, phase 2
(Final/Elimination-rounds) . This demo has 2 gamblers, and one of them (gambler with id 1, ‘Nostradamus’) had
all the forecasts correct, so he has the maximum number of points, which is 254, see Figuur 5: Ranking
Gamblers in Simulation of WC2010 in Match! .

Examples in simulation WC2010:

1. If for match 25 (NED-JPN: 2-0, in qualification-phase), your prediction was 1-0, you will get 2 points
(correct toto).
2. If for match 25 (NED-JPN: 2-0, in qualification-phase), your prediction was 2-0, you will get 3 points
(correct toto and correct score).
3. If for match 52 (NGA-MEX: 3-0, in final-phase), your prediction was: ARG – RSA: 2-0, you will get 2
points (correct toto).
4. If for match 52 (NGA-MEX: 3-0, in final-phase), your prediction was: ARG – MEX: 3-0, you will get 3
points (correct toto and one correct virtal player).
5. If your prediction for the end-rankings was: 1:NED, 2:GER, 3:SVK, 4: ITA, you will get 12 points (correct
end-ranking 2 and 3)

How to fill the gamble-input form

The gamble-input form (Excel-doc) has 4 worksheets (see bottom of form):

1. Match-schedule: match-schedule of WC2010, including virtual matches
2. Players: Id’s for all players
3. Gamblers: Id and name of all gamblers
4. Me: to enter your name and your Gambler-Id

You should fill all blue cells on the form.

STEP 1:
Go to worksheet 4 (‘Me) and fill in your name and Gambler-Id

STEP 2:
Go to worksheet 1 (‘MatchSchedule’).
Enter your prediction for the group-matches (match 1-48).
NB: make sure that you fill the score of player A and B in the correct cells, so in respectively ‘score A’ and
‘score B’.

Example (see Figuur 3: Gamble-input form of gambler in Simulation of WC2010 in Match! with all forecasts
correct ): for match 25 (NED-JPN) the prediction is that player A (= NED) will make 2 goals, and player B (=
JPN) will make 0 goals.

STEP 3:
Go to worksheet 1 (‘MatchSchedule’).
Enter your prediction for the final-matches (match 49-64).

Entering your prediction for the final-matches (49-64) is almost the same as for the group-matches (see step 2),
only now you should also fill your prediction for the virtual players.

For the 1/8-final-matches, the virtual players are indicated by group-name + rank, e.g.:
• A1 = player with rank 1 in group A, so the winner of group A.
• A2 = player with rank 2 in group A, so the runner-up of group A
• B1 = player with rank 1 in group B, so the winner of group B.
Etc.

Example:
Match 49 = A1 – B2 = player with rank 1 in group A - player with rank 2 in group B
For the matches in 1/4-final until the final, the virtual players are indicated by match-ID of the match in the
previous round and the rank in this match (1 = winner, 2 = loser).

Example:
Match 57 (match in 1/4-final) = M53\R1 – M54\R1 (matches in 1/8-final) =
winner of match 53 - winner of match 54

To specify the virtual players of your prediction, you must use the player-Id, as can be seen in Figuur 4: Player-
Id’s in Match! and in worksheet-2 (‘Players’) of the Gamble-input form.

Examples (see Figuur 3: Gamble-input form of gambler in Simulation of WC2010 in Match! with all forecasts
correct ):
• for match 49 (1/8-final), the predicted virtual players A and B are respectively Uruguay (id 3) and Korea
Republic (id 7)
• for match 57 (1/4-final), the predicted virtual players A and B are respectively Slovakia (id 24) and
Switzerland (id 30)

STEP 4:
Save the Excel-doc as ‘MatchScheduleReport’ + <your Gambler-id>, so if your Id =1:
‘MatchScheduleReport1.xls’, if your Id =2 then ‘MatchScheduleReport2.xls’ etc.

STEP 5:
Email Excel-doc to Admin of Pool
