Chapter 1

Introduction

Patriotism is defined as the love of and loyalty to one’s country.

Being aware of the current status of our country is one of the implication

for showing love and loyalty for our country.

Since the 2010 election is forthcoming with its new automated system,

Filipinos must be aware of what will be happening this coming election. This would mark

as the very first automated system of election in the history of the Philippines. Though,

we are not sure yet whether this would be a successful or a failure election.

‘Be the change you want to see ‘, this statement is very inspiring and very

applicable for the voters to vote wisely and be sensitive enough of their surroundings.

Because voting is a right that everybody of age must have, so we must be responsible

enough for our votes for our future, for our children, and for our children’s children.
Statement of the Problem

This study aims to answer the questions below:

 What is automated election system?

 Is the Philippines ready for an automated election system?

 Is it hackable?

 What are the pros and cons of this automated election system?

Importance of the Study

This study aims to clear out things that bother us from this coming 2010

automated election. This study helps the Filipinos to be aware of what will be happening

this very first automated election in the Philippines.

Chapter 2

Discussion of the Problem

I. Introduction

The 2010 election is fast approaching. Yet, like the unending troubles that

are happening in our society, the issue regarding the automation of this incoming election

is not yet perfectly settled because of many inclinations.

II. Is the Philippines ready for an automated election system?

We are all aware that not all Filipinos are engaged with the usage of

technology, and this may lead to fear of voting because of the ignorance in using the new

system of election. Though the COMELEC pursue farther tests for the usage of the

machine, but not all are benefited by this especially the people who are living at the

countryside who are illiterate and unable to read and write. Also the elders who

experience difficulties with their visions. With their absence, this would affect the result

of the election and prohibit them to express their right to vote.

III. Is it hackable?

Another thing is with our technology today, we can say that everything is

possible. And it is not a matter of asking how but by asking when, because th system can

be hacked and manipulated anytime.

1
‘Smartmatic-TIM has continuously failed to demonstrate the level of

security their system has or the level of security they are planning to implement to

prevent possible election fraud and/or election failure’, this means that the automated

election is not safe from the hackers that may attack the new system of election. Thus,

this fact scares the Filipinos from what will happen in the future and for the protection of

their children and their children’s children future.

IV. What are the pros and cons of this automated election system?

The advantages of the automated are (1)it provides efficient way for voting

and with less hassle, (2)voters cannot prolong the process of voting and lined up in a

crowd, (3)people get the tally immediately, rather than to count votes by hand, and (4)

increase speed and efficiently of electoral task and faster electoral results.

While the disadvantages of the automated election are: (1) it affects the

financial savings of the country, (2) there are possibilities for the candidates to hire

computer experts to hack the system and manipulate the entire votes results (unless if the

system is fully secured) and (3) since it is computerized, there is no paper trail and no way

to double check the tally.

Chapter 3

Conclusion

Based from my study and research, I therefore conclude that the result of the

automated election system will be a great part of our future. We should be responsible

enough of the outcome of the election and be a big part of the change we want to happen

in our country. To avoid election failure, Filipinos must be optimistic and must have

proper training of the proper use of the new system.

Recommendation

As the 2010 election is approaching, we must also prepare ourselves for the

possible outcome of the election. Voters must choose the leader that can rule the country

and lead us to progress. Be the change you want to see. Be a productive Filipino for our

country’s future and reputation.
