daily, with new avors or twists on old avors.
This month we take a look back at how it all be-gan. Let’s see how much you remember from youryouth.
•The name “SODA” was coined in the early
nineteenth century, but the product’s true begin-nings go back several centuries to biblical timeswhen bubbling waters from natural springs were amuch sought after delight.
•In 1767, a English scientist named JosephPriestly began experiments to “stimulate the xed
air found in natural waters”. In one of his attempts,he used a primitive apparatus to pour water fromone jar to another held near fermenting vats at alocal brewery. He found that the water easily ab-
sorbed the gas later identied as carbon dioxide,

lished his ndings in
a paper titled “Direc-tions for Impregnat-ing Water with Fixedir”.

carbonated soft drinkwas made in Philadelphia, when Dr. Philip SyngPhysick, the father of American Surgery, asked achemist to prepare carbonated water for a patient.Flavor was added to make the drink have a bettertaste.
•1880: James Vernor, a Detroit druggist, per
-fected the formula for a unique ginger ale drinknamed VERNORS.
•1885: W.B. Morrison at the “Old Corner Drug
Store” in Waco, Texas, developed a distinctively
avored drink at his soda fountain. The name DR
PEPPER was inspired by Morrison’s love for thedaughter of his former employer... you guessedit... his name was Dr. Pepper! DR PEPPER has
