Siena in a Single Word
A MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN
Q
ualityis an overused word in today’s business. Yet I keep coming back to it
whenever I describe Siena, because it is so evident in every facet of our college.

The word has come to mind repeatedly over the past year, particularly as I became
acquainted with students who might be in this fall’s incoming class. The caliber of
these students is among the highest I’ve seen during my tenure here. This is no mean
feat, considering the abilities and accomplishments of our current undergraduates—
like Megan Lodes, whose internship at Tiffany is described in this issue.

The same high quality shows up in our alumni. Year in, year out, they start dynamic

companies, wield influence in their respective fields and take leadership roles in global
organizations. Even more important, they bring their ethical values—learned and
honed at Siena—into a marketplace that desperately needs them. The world of busi-
ness would be much poorer without these accomplished businesspeople.

As for our faculty, I find it hard to imagine a group that better exemplifies the
concept of quality. In research and in the classroom, as mentors and as colleagues, they
are effectively preparing generations of American students for greater competitiveness
in global business. Chester Brearey’s research, also described in this issue, stands as
but one example of outstanding, potentially game-changing work.

Finally, Siena quality has the validation of the business world. Global concerns like Nestlé recruit our students because they recognize quality. Regional banks like Trustco invite Siena to experience Wall Street because they see quality in our students and seek to enhance it.

Quality has brought our School of Business both success and respect. Quality will continue to move us forward in the years to come. I wish my successor all the best and will be cheering from the sidelines—or, rather, the classroom—in 2011 and beyond.
