Waves and radiation
Ref:Learner nameStart date:

Deadline:
07/03/08
Unit : 4

Scenario
Waves are very important. Without them we would have to make do without such usefuldevices as mobile phones, televisions, x ray machines, microwave ovens and satnav. But notonly that; there would be no life on Earth. Even if there was life, we would not be able to see. Inthis assignment you will look at the properties and uses of different types of waves and whythey have some of their effects. You will also look at the properties of radiation and its benefitsand drawbacks.
Assessment evidence:UnitGrading criteria
P2 list the different types of ionising radiations and their propertiesM2 investigate the penetrating ability of different types of ionising radiation through differentthickness of materialsD2 explain the reason for the different penetrating abilities of different types of ionising radiationthrough paper, aluminium and leadP3 identify different type of waves and their main characteristicsM3 investigate different types of waves travelling in different materials (including a vacuum) and between different materialsD3 explain how waves may be used for communications

Task one (P2/M2)
Draw up a table, describing the properties of alpha, beta andgamma radiation
Show with a diagram how you have investigated the properties of these 3 types of radiation and describe the results of thisexperiment
Task two (D2)
distinction only
Draw pictures or make models of alpha and beta particles andgamma rays
Explain the reason for the penetrating power and danger of eachtype of radiation.
Task three (P3)
Draw a diagram of the electromagnetic spectrum. On your diagram, describe the features and uses of each type of wave.
Task four (M3)
merit only
Describe using diagrams/photographs and writing twoexperiments you have carried out with light; one experiment onreflection and one on refraction
Describe an experiment you have investigated on sound wavesin a vacuum.
Task 5 (D3)
distinction only
Explain in detail how radio waves, microwaves or visible light areused in three of the following forms of communication: mobilephones, optical fibres, radio and TV broadcasts, wi-fi computer
