Finding GIS Job

Geographic information systems (GIS) is a technical field that encompasses the computerized systems
used to collect, store, analyze, manipulate and present complex geographical information such as
mapping. A typical work day for a GIS job will involve aiding engineers, planners and other professionals
that require GIS data in order to better execute their own responsibilities. A GIS job may be found in
many different job sectors but is most often found in government, engineering, architecture and
sometimes construction firms. In addition, there are GIS firms whose core function is generating and
selling GIS data that relates to certain niches and this is another place where one may find a GIS
position. GIS is in itself a broad field and there are different job types with diverse responsibilities. Some
GIS jobs include GIS technicians, GIS specialists and GIS data specialists.

The key to finding a good GIS position is first attaining the requisite level of education. The educational
curriculum will provide the solid foundation required to function efficiently in a GIS related job. These
GIS basics will include cartographic techniques, data management, data manipulation and programming.
It is important that one gain competence in the most widely used software applications in the GIS field.
One example of a widely used software tool is Arcinfo. The GIS arena, just like many other technical
careers, changes rapidly and hence the need for one to stay up to date with current developments by
reading GIS magazines and attending workshops and conferences.
New graduates will have to be ready to work in less challenging and more mundane tasks before they
are entrusted with responsibilities that are at the crux of a typical GIS role. Since a GIS professional has
to interact with professionals in other fields (which might mean people in a different department or a
different organisation altogether) good communication skills, strong people and competence in
managing resources and time are all vital to ensuring success at a job in GIS.
