Congratulations toPriscilla, Matt, Tim, Richard, Jason, Hayley,Scott, Dion and Dejan. Our Chief Instructor,Ross, said these were a great group of peoplewho are now fully fledged lifesavers, and keen to get more awards so Ihope they were made welcome. Many thanks to Ross and Barry onceagain for training another batch of lifesavers to help lighten our load onpatrol, and to Dan Donahoe, for helping out as well.We now only have a couple of ordinary weekends to go, then the longweekend of Anzac Day (with a holiday on Monday) and the Labour Dayweekend (also a holiday on the Monday) which is the last weekend of theseason. We will be having a clean-up / stocktake on the last day ofpatrols so come along and help out so that everything is in tip topcondition before it's put away for the winter. IRB Australian Championships - 16 / 17 / 18 April

Our Kawana team is heading off in a week or so to travel to Penguin, inTasmania for the Aussie IRB Titles. They have new boats and motors whichwere received earlier this season, through the Community Gambling BenefitFund. They have been training hard so all bodes well for a serious assaulton the competition with the only unusual feature being the location, downnear the South Pole, well nearly! But I've heard they've imported someVictorians as 'patients', who might be a little more used to the icy watersthan our guys and girls are. They also have a brand new trailer, purposely built for travel (after some serious fundraising), so we wish themall the best for the competition, and hopfully they'll uphold the blue star tradition, and bring home a fewmedals.

 Youth Development Camp

Survivor Mudjimba 2010 by Jack Stringer
Another year, another camp, and we survived yet again ...but only just!!This year's camp was the best ever with the largest number of "survivors" participatingfrom our great club than any other year. This camp would have had to be the greatestcamp I had ever been on. It was packed with tons of great activities, in which youcompeted with your tribe to gain points to win the trophy! (Garden gnome called Barry!).Starting off in the Viti Luvu tribe I had only known one person from the greatest club in theworld, Kawana, but by the end I had made many friends that I hope will be there nexttime. Although Viti Luvu didn't win we tried our hardest in all the events: War cries, duck races, team building, orienteering in the mud and dark, commando course in which it was great fun to get muddy!, and many moreactivities. I had great fun as you can see and can't wait until next year. Goooo Viti luvu!
Courtney Elsmore
, our Youth and Development director, who was a Leader on the camp above, is off thisweekend as a participant in the 2010 State Pelerman Leadership Excellence Program, held again at Mudjimbafor the 18 to 25 year olds. We wish her well, but it's a shame there's no rain and mud this time!
Houleys - a big thank you!

All the different sections of surf sports - nippers, seniors, masters and IRB - would like to thank these twowonderful people, Judy and Geoff, who go to so many carnivals and officiate for us! We would be lost withoutthem and so would like to thank them sincerely for a job well done! Your efforts are certainly appreciate by ourathletes. Hopefully, you can enjoy a rest from the sun, the rain and other elements that make up being anofficial at lifesaving events!
Down Time for Trainers!

The majority of training and proficiencies have been completed for the season although there might be a FirstAid course or some IRB courses still coming, but I've heard Barry Jones and his wife are heading off into thewide blue yonder in their recently purchased caravan. Both Barry (as our Club Supervisor) and Ross (as ourChief Instructro) and who undertake the majority of the training and assessing at our club, are well deservingof a good rest now, but we need to make it known how much their services over many years areappreciated. Hopefully we'll see them both back refreshed and ready to do a bit more! The education and training duties (including proficiencies) are never ending and it would be great to see someother members step up and help out with training to lighten the load for these gentlemen. A couple havealready with Dan Donahoe helping out, and Kane Domio just completed his award to become a trainer as well.
Surf Sports - Aussies
After a good showing at the State Championships, the weather again was not kind for ourmasters and got worse at the competition went on. We still had a couple of good results withHeath Collie and Scott Brysden winning a gold medal in the Masters Double Ski event fortheir age group (a tremendous result considering this was Scott's first foray into surflifesaving competition), and one of the womens boat crews - Sue Estreich, RayleneSymons, Clare Burns, and Leesa O'Brien, swept by Rick Estreich, also winning a gold medalin the Masters event. Conditions were very trying, and after the tragic drowning and with therest of the competition being cancelled, it was a sad way to end the season, with some of ourathletes not getting a chance to compete at all. But our condolences do go out to the family ofSaxon Bird, and his club, Queenscliffe.Another bright note was the announcement of Paul Schloss as winning the "AustralianRookie Sweep of the Year" at the annual Boaties Convention which takes place after theAussies. Congratulations to Paul - a fitting tribute to the work he's done at the club with theboat crews over the last couple of years, and in securing some good sponsors for thissection.Congratulations to all competitors, young and old, who compete for us, and as such, have to maintain theirpatrol obligations as well as the training involved in top class competition, and balance their own life into thebargain!
