Supply chain safety management – test case 1: wheelsets
Research aims
 This project was required to identifypotential supply contracts coveringwheelset purchase and sample the existingelements in the supply chain to cover arepresentative cross section of suppliersand products within the supply chain.
Research findings
The findings from the research revealedconsiderable shortcomings in the supplychain. However, it did identify some areasdefined as ‘quick wins’, where a fastbenefit response can be made at a lowcost. The research did not delve into thecontractual side of wheelset procurementas anticipated; however the report isregarded as a useful reference forstakeholder consideration.
Next steps
The Research and Development team arecurrently undertaking a major consultationwith stakeholders to determine thepriorities for research in the 2004/05financial year. Through this process, andreflecting stakeholder views, a decision willbe taken as to what direction follow-onwork is undertaken.
