Tzav
We manage comfortably,
even though the Holy Vestments,
with all the gold and precious stones,
which God ordered my husband to wear,
had to be made to order;
it cost an arm and a leg,
which came from our own pocket;
we will be paying out the tailor and jeweler
until God only knows when.

Kedoshim
I am a peddler.
I go from village to village
selling trinkets and variety goods.
To my customers I am as welcome as a rich uncle.
Over a glass of tea or a schnapps
we bargain the price of needles,
a spool of thread, a pot or a pan.
Always they buy something.
But what they really want is gossip;
a juicy scandal makes them happy,
when they are happy they buy.
But Israelites don’t much drink or gamble or whore,
so I have to stretch a rumor into a scandal.
Like the poor priest, whose name I don’t mention,
who borrowed two shekels from the charity box,
to buy a loaf of bread for his family,
it became a story of how he gambled at dice
and became a wealthy landowner.

Behar
He sold us a dream,
and though it foretold a formidable price,
we bought it.
He took no commission.
