Hello and welcome to issue 5 of Kikked!.
This issue marks Kikked!'s first birthday,
and as usual, comes packed with a broad
range of art forms to stimulate your
senses. We are also very happy to unveil
our new logo for this issue, which has
been custom designed by the artist Dillon,
who is also interviewed in this issue. The
logo, and Dillon, can be seen on the front
cover.
Music for this issue comes from Italian
rock band Magdalen Graal, the Speaker
Junkies, German post-punks Din-A
Testbild, and Fred from Lua Records
talking about their recent "Deep Trip"
trilogy to Timothy Leary.
We bring you reports from the recent
DocsBarcelona documentary film festival,
and ANIMAC animation festival, both
from Spain, and we also look at the new
Banksy film "Exit Through The Gift Shop".
Graffiti comes from Russia, with some
stunning murals from Elk Island and artist
Vhils, also from Gaza, where we look at
the recent "Gaza Graffiti" photo
exhibition, and from France, with the
current Lex & Sten exhibition.
In addition to this, we have interviews with
French stencil artist Jinks, Dutch VJ artist
VJ 249_k, and a visual interview from
German artist Bobok, as well as features
on Maori Ta Moko tattoo art, Norwegian
artists Verdensteatret performing in
China, the upcoming Neo-Surrealism
exhibition in Portugal, and the upcoming
Ostrale 010 exhibition in Germany.

Hola y bienvenidos a la edición de 5 de
Kikked!.
Esta edición marca Kikked! 'S primer
cumpleaños, y como de costumbre, viene
embalado con una amplia gama de formas de
arte para estimular sus sentidos. También
estamos muy contentos de presentar nuestro
nuevo logo para esta edición, que ha sido
diseñado por el artista Dillon, quien también es
entrevistado en esta edición. El logotipo, y
Dillon, se puede ver en la portada.
Música para esta edición viene de la banda de
rock italiana Graal Magdalena, el presidente
Junkies, alemán post-punks Din-A Testbild, y
Fred de Expedientes Lua hablando de su
reciente "Deep Trip" trilogía de Timothy Leary.
Nosotros le ofrecemos los informes de la
reciente festival de cine documental
DocsBarcelona, y el festival de animación
ANIMAC, tanto de España, y esperamos

Graffiti proviene de Rusia, con unos
impresionantes murales de Elk Island y Vhils
artista, también de Gaza, donde nos fijamos

 “Anamnesis”, by Andrew Parmi
My real world name is Andrew , but I’m
better known by the moniker ‘Parmi’. I have a
driving passion for photography which began
in 1994, when I first picked up an SLR
camera in my VCE Studio Arts class. Fast
forward to this day and age, and my vision is
to capture the world as we know it, and
present it in a way that we may not.
My portfolio includes landscape, portraiture
and architectural pieces along with abstract
realism, and more, often blended with the
techniques of digital post processing.
Artistically, my endeavors are constantly
changing, developing and evolving. My art
reflects myself, my influences and how I see
the world around me.
Mi nombre es Andrew mundo real, pero
soy más conocido por el apodo de “Parmi”.
Tengo una pasión por la fotografía de
conducción que comenzó en 1994, cuando
por primera vez tomó una cámara SLR en
mi clase VCE Arts Studio. Un avance
rápido hasta este día y edad, y mi visión es
la de capturar el mundo como lo
conocemos, y presentarlo de una manera
que puede que no.
Mi cartera incluye paisajes, retratos y
piezas arquitectónicas, junto con el
realismo abstracto, y más, a menudo
combinadas con las técnicas de
procesamiento de la postproducción digital.
Artísticamente, mis esfuerzos están en
constante evolución, desarrollo y evolución.
Mi arte refleja a mí mismo, mis influencias
y de cómo veo el mundo a mi alrededor.

My pieces often takes two avenues of
theme: a darker, sometimes scary world
of unseen nightmares, and a nostalgic
playground of memories, much safer and
happier than the former. Everything in
between is life as we see it, and even
sometimes as we don’t like to see it. I like
to think that my art is emotive work that
creates a contemplative mood. I tend to
notice everything, from the simple objects
around us to the wonders of the world in
which we live. I like paying attention to the
little details we sometimes miss. I really
believe it is the image in our mind that
creates the eventual photo.
I have one general rule to photography:
“Look up. You miss so much at eye level
only.”
Mis piezas a menudo tiene dos vías de tema:
un tono más oscuro, a veces aterradora del
mundo de pesadillas invisible, y un patio de
recreo nostálgico de los recuerdos, mucho más
segura y más feliz que el anterior. Todo lo que
entre ellas está la vida como lo vemos nosotros,
e incluso a veces como donâ t ™ € gustaría
verlo. Me gusta pensar que mi arte es un
trabajo emocional que crea un estado de ánimo
contemplativo. Tiendo a cuenta de todo, desde
los simples objetos que nos rodean a las
maravillas del mundo en que vivimos. Me gusta
prestar atención a los pequeños detalles que a
veces se pierda. Realmente creo que es la
imagen en nuestra mente la que crea la foto
final.
Yo tengo una regla general a la fotografía: “Mire
hacia arriba. Echa de menos tanto a nivel del
ojo solamente”.

You come from an artistic family. Do
you think that was a benefit to you when
growing up ?
In fact, I was fortunate to grow up among
artists. My grandfather was a ceramic artist,
he has taught me about artists like Dali,
Picasso, MC Escher and still many others. I
will probably do him homage by reproducing
one of his works. My father was a
photographer for French magazines, it
allowed me to have a camera when I was
very young.
All this has educated my mind and my
artistic outlook.
You first became interested in rap music
in the late 80's. What first drew your
attention to it ?
In the late 1980s, French rap is on the air
with the first freestyles Saxo, Rico, New
Generation MC'S, NTM, Assassin, and MC
Solaar Minister Amer. These artists have
produced live on the show "Deenastyle"
presented by Dee Nasty on Radio Nova.
On hearing that, I had the trigger!
Then came the Swiss groups: Sens Unik,
Double Pact and Spanish with Arma Blanca
among others.
The rap at the time was very demanding,
and now he too used just to make money ...
On French radio we have no quality ...
Vienes de una familia de artistas. ¿Cree
usted que era un beneficio para usted
cuando crecía?
De hecho, tuve la suerte de crecer entre los
artistas. Mi abuelo era un artista de la
cerámica, me ha enseñado acerca de
artistas como Dalí, Picasso, MC Escher y
otros muchos. Probablemente voy a rendirle
homenaje mediante la reproducción de una
de sus obras. Mi padre era un fotógrafo de
revistas francesas, que me permitió tener
una cámara cuando yo era muy joven.
Todo esto ha educado a mi mente y mi
punto de vista artístico.
En primer lugar, se interesó en la música
rap en los años 80. Lo primero que llamó
su atención a ella?
A finales de 1980, el rap francés está en el
aire con la primera freestyles Saxo, Rico,
Nueva Generación MC'S, NTM, Assassin, y
MC Solaar Ministro Amer. Estos artistas han
producido vivo en el programa "Deenastyle",
presentado por Dee Nasty en Radio Nova.
Al oír eso, tuve el gatillo!
Luego vinieron los grupos suizos: Sens Unik,
el Pacto de dobles y español con Arma
Blanca entre otros.
El rap en el momento era muy exigente, y
ahora él también usa sólo para hacer
dinero ... En la radio francesa que no tienen
calidad ...
Your photography and video work has
included working for magazines and TV in
France. Has this been useful for you in
your development as an artist?
These experiences made me a lot and
allowed me to meet real hip hop activists
worldwide such as Method Man, Insight,
King Solomon ...
I also sharpened my sense of image, which
now allows me to create my stencils.
T.A.N.K. (Tous Artistes Nantais
Konfondus) was an exhibition featuring
graffiti from Nantes. Do you have any
plans for similar future exhibitions ?
TANK, was the official site of graffiti Nantais
which I created in 2004.
It aimed to expose the web quality
achievements of collective Nantais. The site
had just passed the 1,500,000 visitors when
I decided to close to allow me to devote to
my paintings. But by the end of the year we
will remake a new site featuring the history of
hip hop in Nantes.

T.A.N.K. (Tous Artistes Nantais

TANK, fue el sitio oficial de Nantais graffiti
que he creado en el año 2004.
Su objetivo era exponer los logros de
calidad web Nantais colectiva. El sitio
acababa de pasar el 1.500.000 visitantes
cuando decidí cerrar que me permitiera
dedicarme a mis pinturas. Pero hacia el final
del año vamos a rehacer un nuevo sitio
sobre la historia del hip hop en Nantes.
What is the scene in Nantes like in
relation to graffiti and hip-hop?
The Nantaise Hip-Hop scene is very rich.
We have the Hocus Pocus group that mixes
rap and acoustic instruments. In Autumn
2009, the group Nantais Akalmy was
featured on albums by Cypress Hill! There
is also the DJ group "Coup 2 Crosse" 5
times DMC world champion! yeah yeah!!
And concerning graffiti, it all began in the
80s, when Jef Aerosol covered the walls of
our city with stencils. Graffiti has also
appeared in Nantes in the mid 80's with X
Bass. In 1987 comes the Crew "RP1"
Šnek, the "LDN" with Lone, Sine and Keno,
and the collective "CEO". Nasher In 1990,
Luis, and Easy Web's form the "ESC".
In 1991, the first graffiti exhibition in Nantes
named "Bomb'art" takes place. Then in
1993 came Ozer, Scot, Shok ... Now, most
walls Brownfields are invested by our
graffiti.
¿Como es la escena en Nantes en relación
con el graffiti y el hip-hop?
La escena Nantaise Hip-Hop es muy rica.
Tenemos el grupo de Hocus Pocus, que
mezcla rap y los instrumentos acústicos. En
otoño de 2009, el grupo Nantais Akalmy
apareció en los álbumes de Cypress Hill!
También está el grupo de DJ "Coup 2
Crosse" 5 veces campeón del mundo de
DMC! sí sí!
Y sobre graffiti, todo empezó en los años 80,
cuando Jef Aerosol cubrían las paredes de
nuestra ciudad con stencils. Graffiti también
ha aparecido en Nantes a mediados de los

1990, Luis y Easy Web constituyen la "ESC".
En 1991, la primera exposición de graffiti en
Nantes llamado "Bomb'art" se lleva a cabo.
Luego, en 1993, entró Ozer, escocés,
Shok ... Ahora, la mayoría de los terrenos
baldíos paredes están invertidos por nuestro
graffiti.
When did your interest in stencils
begin ?
For several years I have graffiti'd on
walls, trains ... When I reached 30 years I
am a bit challenged. Graffiti is costly and
not without risk. In 2007 I re-discovered
work of two great Stencils: Jef Aerosol
and Logan Hicks. This corresponded
perfectly to my desire to speak differently
in the graffiti. I cut stencils every day for 3
years - I have made 1600 stencils. It
became a drug! At first I was doing
personality portraits, then with time I
improved in my technique, so I pushed
quality up treating a subject that touches
me more.
How would you define yourself as an
artist ?
I define myself as a committed artist. I
put in scene the cruelty of our world:
death live Omayra Sanchez, famine, war,
capitalism ... to better expose. I also
caricatured politicians, Sarkozy among
others I put on an electric chair.
Then, I also paint a lot of artistic
personalities from film, music that
touches me. For all these artists express
something special.
¿Cuándo empezó su interés en iniciar las
plantillas?
Durante varios años he graffiti'd en las paredes,
trenes ... Cuando llegué a 30 años soy un poco
cuestionado. El graffiti es costoso y no exento
de riesgos. En 2007 volví a descubrir el trabajo
de dos grandes plantillas: Aerosol Jef y Hicks
Logan. Esto se corresponde perfectamente a mi
deseo de hacer uso de manera diferente en el
graffiti. Corté plantillas todos los días durante 3
años - He hecho 1600 plantillas. Se convirtió en
una droga! Al principio yo estaba haciendo
retratos de la personalidad, a continuación, con
el tiempo he mejorado en mi técnica, así que
empujé calidad hasta el tratamiento de un tema
que me toca más.
¿Cómo te definirías como artista?
Me defino como un artista comprometido.
Puse en escena la crueldad de nuestro mundo:

You work with a variety of material,
wood, metal, canvas, etc. Are there any
materials you find more comfortable to
work with or is it relevant ?
I love working in all media, but I have my
preference for the walls of Nantes.
What is important for me is that my work
speaks to people, either painting on canvas
or body!
Who or what influences you ?
I'm influenced by everything around me in
the street, television, newspapers ...
I am sensitive to forms of power and the
infamy that it can cause.
What advice would you give to fellow
artists ?
Do not ever let go of your art! Our walls
need you!
Usted trabaja con una variedad de
materiales, madera, metal, tela, etc ¿Hay
materiales que encuentran más cómodo
para trabajar con o ¿es relevante?
Me encanta trabajar en todos los medios, pero
tengo mi preferencia por las paredes de
Nantes.
Lo que es importante para mí es que mi
trabajo habla a la gente, ya sea la pintura
sobre lienzo o el cuerpo!
¿Quién o qué te influye?
Estoy influenciado por todo a mi alrededor en
la calle, televisión, periódicos ...
Soy sensible a las formas de poder y la
infamia de que puede causar.
¿Qué consejo le daría a otros artistas?
No lo dejes ir de tu arte! Nuestras muros que
usted necesita!
Is graffiti a religion ?
I think in a sense the graffiti is like a
religion. We believe in our art, we are
claimants ... but who is our god? Montana?
"Dare" has joined our god.
Where do you see your work developing
in the future ?
I hope my art can travel around the world
and is able to live.

Es el graffiti una religión?
Creo que en cierto sentido, el graffiti es como
una religión. Creemos en nuestro arte, somos

During the last two years thanks to
Myspace, Magdalen Graal has reached a
huge popularity, collecting fans all over
the world.
Everything started in September 2008,
when she started this production,
recorded her self-named album and built
her page on Myspace. Within few months
she already gained the trust of thousands
fans. Then came the propose, by the
American Enigma Films, to collaborate to
the soundtrack of their last film, “Alarum”.
The Alarum production has chosen two
songs from Magdalen’s album, ”You will
arrive” & “Goodbye”, apart from the first
single “There’s no end” and the video of
the song.
Things went on perfectly, and with the
film “Alarum”, Magdalen gained the
FMPTA (Florida Motion Picture and
Television Association) “Crystal Reel
Award” as “Best female vocalist & best
video”. Things can’t go better!

you tell us a little about why the band
started ?
The band started because we, me and
my producer in particular, wanted to
create something new, based on high

It was crazy!!! When Krista Grotte, the
main actress in the film “Alarum”, first
contacted us asking to have some of my
music I realized that something was going
to happen. Even without winning a prize I
knew that something was changing
because, damn, someone was asking for
my music!!! I just couldn’t believe that!
Well so together with the production of
the film and mine, we decided which
songs had to be part of the DVD, and it
was done, we just had to wait until the
official release. Nothing special happened
for few months (apart from the excellent
comments coming from all over Florida)
until Krista mailed me saying we had won
the FMPTA!!!I was there with my
producer and we looked at each other
and just didn’t know what to say!

premio que sabía que algo estaba cambiando
porque, maldita sea, alguien estaba pidiendo
mi música! Simplemente no podía creer eso!

película y el mío, hemos decidido qué
canciones tenía que formar parte del DVD, y
fue hecho, solo hemos tenido que esperar
hasta el lanzamiento oficial. Nada especial
sucedió por unos meses (aparte de los
excelentes comentarios que vienen de todo
Florida) hasta que me escribió diciendo Krista
habíamos ganado el FMPTA! Estuve allí con
mi productor y nos miramos unos a otros y
acaba de hacer no sé qué que decir!

mailed me the award. I remember holding
that white package in my hands and then
me looking at that perfect mirror(see pics
on my MySpace page)!!!It was amazing,
one of the best moment ever!!
Your first album was self-produced. 
Can you tell us how you achieved that ?
Well I already knew my producer, but
nothing started since one evening when he
was by chance playing the piano and I was
there and so I started singing something .
We immediately understood that
something huge and important could
start.That’s when,and how, “Together” was
born!
You've built up a presence and
following from your debut album and
your MySpace page.  What tools or
strategies do you use online for
marketing and how effective have you
found them ?
Absolutely. I think that the net is the best
way to promote your music. There’s one
thing you absolutely need to become
“someone” in this world, and that is the
heart of the people who listen to your
music. There isn’t another way that can
reach their hearts such as the
net;everyone spends the most part of the
day in front of a computer, so it’s all up to
this, and to you, of course, you have to
work really hard to do this. And of course
you must have a valid product. You can’t
become famous if you don’t have
something that deserves it.

Why did YouTube remove your video ?
I think that it happened because someone
found it too uncomfortable; you know,
“There’s no end” is a strong video, it’s not
so easy to watch and it’s not so easy to
face the truth it communicates. So
someone thought that we were “talking too
much”, and decided that it had to be taken
aways from the eyes and the minds of
those who didn’t yet know about this
reality.
How do you feel about censorship in
music / art ?
Angry. I don’t think that censorship is
something “possible” when you’re talking
about Art. Art, with all the forms it can
have, is something that needs freedom,
first of all, freedom to speak, to
communicate with the world. There are
people who can communicate only with a
form of art, and they need to speak, they
need to say what they have in their minds
and in their hearts. And what about
freedom of opinion? We’re talking about
countries who build their strength on it!
That’s why I get so angry when it comes to
this matter!!

la música / arte?
Enojado. Yo no, AOT pensar que la censura

How would you describe your music ?
I always answer that it is “alternative goth
rock”, which means a mix of gothic rock and
something “alternative” which can be the
synths, that I love and for which we still are
inspired by Depeche Mode, which are the
kings of synth-rock!
Would you say that your music has a
slight Celtic feel to it ?
Yes, I love Northern music, and I feel really
inspired by its sound!
You mention 2012 and Mayan predictions
in your blog. What are your thoughts on
this area?
My thoughts?It’s quite easy: I think that
something’s going to change, the world is no
more the same, the earth is in rebellion, and
we can’t ignore this. I believe in the Mayan
predictions and the Dresda Code are true. I
can’t say what is going to happen, but I
believe something is going to change!
What are your plans for the future ?
I am currently working on the second album
which is almost done, but we work hard on
the instrumental parts, and I know it will be
absolutely wonderful!(and not just because
it’s mine!!LOL)

The DocsBarcelona International
Documentary Film Festival, a point of
convergence in Barcelona for debate,
entertainment, screenings of today’s
finest and most diverse documentaries
and talks with the creators of those films,
was held between 2-7 February 2010.
This year, the festival featured two new
sections, in addition to its Panorama, Le
Dernier Repas, Historia, 12-16, Catalan
Day and Xtra. D’Amèrica brought
documentaries from different Latin
American countries to Barcelona’s
audiences, whilst the 7-11 section aims to
open up the world of the documentary
film to younger children.
With a total of 8 different sections, the
festival programmes were selected by
expert guests who guaranteed an
interesting range of international titles and
master classes that offer privileged
insight to the situation of the documentary
genre.
Closing Ceremony (J. Anguera)
El DocsBarcelona Festival Internacional de
Documentales, un punto de convergencia en
Barcelona para el debate, entretenimiento,
proyecciones de documentales más finos y más
diverso de hoy y las conversaciones con los
creadores de las películas, se llevó a cabo entre
2-7 febrero de 2010.
Este año, el festival contó con dos nuevas
secciones, además de su Panorama, Le
Dernier Repas, Historia, 12-16, Catalán Day y
Xtra. D'Amèrica trajo documentales de
diferentes países de América Latina para el
público de Barcelona, mientras que la sección
7-11 tiene como objetivo abrir el mundo de la
película documental para los niños más
pequeños.
Con un total de 8 diferentes secciones, el
festival de los programas fueron seleccionados
por invitados expertos que garantizan una
interesante gama de títulos internacionales y
clases magistrales que ofrecen una visión
privilegiada a la situación del género
documental.
The festival featured 8 sections put together
by documentary experts. Moreover, in
keeping with every year, well-known
directors and producers were there to
discuss the films with their viewers following
the screenings.
The 8 sections were :
Opening and Closing Ceremonies :
Each year, the festival kicks off on a
Wednesday with a session for viewers,
institutions, professionals and guests,
presenting the line-up for the upcoming
days and offering a screening of a specially
selected documentary film. The Opening
Ceremony served as the backdrop for this
year’s presentation of Televisió de
Catalunya’s annual TV3 Awards. The
screening of another documentary, a
musical, was the central focus of the
Closing Ceremony on Sunday evening.
El festival incluyó 8 secciones elaborado
por expertos documental. Por otra parte, de
acuerdo con todos los años, directores de
renombre y los productores estaban allí
para hablar de las películas con sus
espectadores tras la proyección.
Las secciones son:
Inauguración y Clausura:
Cada año, el festival arranca el miércoles
con una sesión para los espectadores,
instituciones, profesionales e invitados, la
presentación de la alineación para los
próximos días y con una proyección de un
documental seleccionado especialmente.
La ceremonia de inauguración sirvió como
escenario para la presentación de este año
de premios anuales de TV3 Televisió de
Catalunya. La proyección de otro
documental, un musical, fue el tema central
de la Ceremonia de Clausura en la tarde
del domingo.
Panorama - Fresh from the Lab :
A total of 4 documentary films make up
Panorama, a section that offers a sampling
of the most important and interesting
recent documentary productions in the
international scene.
Featured film included Constantine and
Elena (Andrei Dascalescu). A film about
the simple life of an elderly couple in a
small village in Romania. In love for over
50 years, they still enjoy everyday life with
the little things they have. A film about an
ancestral way of living and loving almost
extinct.
Historia - The Good "Old" Times :
The documentary as the ideal format to
explore history’s oddities. This section
focuses on those particular types of films
that serve as organisers for the memory
and as prisms to examine the reality of the
facts and events of our most recent history
and of a more distant past.
Featured films included Cooking History
(Peter Kerekes), a film that introduces a
new angle on European history through the
testimonies of different military cooks who
served in various armies in European wars
of the 20th Century.
Constantine and Elena
Panorama - Fresco del Laboratorio:
Un total de 4 películas documentales
componen Panorama, una sección que
ofrece una muestra de las producciones
documentales más importantes e
interesantes recientes en la escena
internacional.
Películas figuraron Constantino y Elena
(Andrei Dascalescu). Una película sobre la
vida sencilla de una pareja de ancianos en un
pequeño pueblo de Rumania. En el amor
desde hace más de 50 años, todavía disfrutar
de la vida cotidiana de las pequeñas cosas
que tienen. Una película sobre una ancestral
forma de vivir y de amar casi extinto.
Historia - El Bueno "Viejo" Tiempos:
El documental como el formato ideal para
explorar rarezas de la historia. Esta sección
se centra en los tipos de películas que sirven
como organizadores de la memoria y como
prismas de examinar la realidad de los
hechos y acontecimientos de nuestra historia
más reciente y de un pasado más lejano.
Películas figuraron Cocina Historia (Peter
Kerekes), una película que introduce un
nuevo ángulo en la historia europea a través
de los testimonios de diferentes cocineros
militares que sirvieron en varios ejércitos en
las guerras europeas del siglo 20.
Andrei Dascalescu
Catalan Day :
An evening of tribute to the most important
and famous documentaries from Catalunya.
Programme by Daniel Jariod, a filmmaker
and a film theory and history professor at
the ESCAC. Featured films included El
perdón (The Forgiveness) (Ventura Durall)
which is a journey into the depths of the
human mind following the story of Andrés
Rabadán, who after killing his father with a
crossbow, was diagnosed with delirious
paranoid schizophrenia and senteced to 20
years in a psychiatric penitentiary.
Le Dernier Repas - A Personal Choice :
“At my last supper, I want to see my
brothers…” So goes the song by Jacques
Brel. Each year, DocsBarcelona invites a
key figure from the documentary world to
present his/her favourite works. This year,
Roc Villas was doing the honours. Roc
Villas, a film club devotee, independent
filmmaker and critic. The Director of the
Sitges International Film Festival in 1999
and 2000, he has served as the Director of
the Film Library of Catalonia from 2001 to
2009.
El perdón & Ventrada (L. Huertas)
Catalán Día:
Una noche de homenaje a los documentales
más importantes y famosos de Catalunya.
Programa de Daniel Jariod, un director de cine
y una teoría del cine y profesor de historia en
la ESCAC. películas figuraron Perdón (El
Perdón) (Ventura Durall) que es un viaje a las
profundidades de la mente humana siguiendo
la historia de Andrés Rabadán, quien después
de matar a su padre con una ballesta, se le
diagnosticó esquizofrenia paranoide y
delirante senteced a 20 años en una
penitenciaría psiquiátrica.
Le Dernier Repas - una opción personal:
"En mi última cena, quiero ver a mis hermanos
..." Así dice la canción de Jacques Brel. Cada
año, DocsBarcelona invita a una figura clave
del mundo documental para presentar su obra
favorita. Este año, Roc Villas estaba haciendo
los honores. Roc Villas, un devoto del club de
cine, cineasta independiente y crítico. El
Director del Sitges Festival Internacional de
Cine en 1999 y 2000, se ha desempeñado
como Director de la Filmoteca de Cataluña
desde 2001 hasta 2009.
D'America Looking Over Seas :
A new section devoted to productions that
come from Central and South America. A
showcase for the excellent work of Latin
America’s documentary filmmakers.
Programme by Joan Gonzàlez, the
Director of DocsBarcelona and the Director
of the production company Parallel40.
Featured films included El último aplauso
(The Last Applause) by German Kral, the
emotional story of a group of old forgotten
tango singers from Buenos Aires who for
many years performed in the famous
tango bar “El Chino.”
Doc! Doc! Doc! - Freshmen First Docs :
Doc! Doc! Doc! (Which comes from an
onomatopoeic play on words, evoking a
knock at the door) unveils the freshest
films of today’s up-and-coming filmmakers.
Programme by Joan Gallifa, a journalist.
He has been a member of the Televisió de
Catalunya - TV3 team since 1984, where
he works with the broadcaster’s news
programmes and in social documentary
series production. Today, he is the Director
of the documentary programme Taller.
Featured films included Icaro (Pep Martín
Closas), a film which explores the final
stages of César’s terminal cancer, and
shows the testimonies of the people who
were by his side during his last days.

Una nueva sección dedicada a las
producciones que vienen de Centro y
Sudamérica. Un escaparate de la excelente
labor de los documentalistas de América

Aplauso Ultimo (El Último Aplausos) por el
alemán Kral, la historia emocional de un grupo
de antiguos cantantes de tango olvidadas de
Buenos Aires que durante muchos años
realizó en el bar del famoso tango "El Chino".
Doc! Doc! Doc! - Estudiantes de primer año
Docs:
Doc! Doc! Doc! (Que viene de un juego de
palabras onomatopéyicas, evocando un golpe
en la puerta) dio a conocer los más frescos
películas de cineastas con mucho futuro a día
de hoy. Programa de Joan Gallifa, un
periodista. Ha sido miembro de la Televisió de
Catalunya - TV3 equipo desde 1984, donde
trabaja con los programas de noticias de la
emisora y en la producción social series
documentales. Hoy, él es el director del
documental del programa Taller. películas
figuraron Icaro (Pep Martín Closas), una
película que explora las etapas finales de un
cáncer terminal de César, y muestra los
testimonios de las personas que estaban a su
lado durante sus últimos días.

Kids and Teens :
12-16 - Docs 4 Teens : In an increasingly
more global and interconnected world, 12-
16 offers adolescent viewers a new means
of travel and a new prism to discover
realities all around the planet that are
nevertheless close to them, through an
otherwise seemingly distant genre. Each
year, students from different schools
around Barcelona and its surrounding
towns fill the city’s theatres at matinee
show times. The result is an entertaining,
educational and interactive experience,
where the students moreover have the
opportunity to meet the directors and
discuss their films.
7-11 - Docs 4 Kids : Thanks to the
success of the 12-16 section at past
celebrations, DocsBarcelona has decided
to reach out to an even younger audience,
this time targeting children between ages 7
and 11. With this initiative, the festival
opens up the documentary genre to their
youngest viewers yet.

12-16 - Docs 4 Teens: En un mundo cada
vez más global e interconectado, 12-16 ofrece
a los espectadores adolescentes un nuevo
medio de viaje y un nuevo prisma para
descubrir la realidad de todo el planeta que
son, sin embargo cerca de ellos, a través de
una otra manera aparentemente género
lejano. Cada año, los estudiantes de
diferentes escuelas por Barcelona y sus
ciudades circundantes llenan teatros de la
ciudad en horarios de matinée. El resultado es
una experiencia entretenida, educativa e
interactiva, donde los estudiantes, además,
tienen la oportunidad de conocer y discutir los
directores de sus películas.
7-11 - Docs 4 Kids: Gracias al éxito de la
sección de 12-16 en las celebraciones
anteriores, DocsBarcelona ha decidido llegar
a un público aún más joven, esta vez dirigida
a los niños entre las edades de 7 y 11. Con
esta iniciativa, el festival se abre el género
documental a sus televidentes más jóvenes
todavía.

war period thousands of people came to
Barcelona, fleeing poverty and political
persecution. Many of them spent years
living in caves and shacks. A forgotten
part of the history of Barcelona that is
now told through the voices of those who
endured it.
Xtra - Meet the Masters : Xtra is
structured in two major sections: master
classes and documentary screenings.
This year, the four scheduled discussions
were held in the auditorium of La Pedrera
of Caixa Catalunya. These were: 7 plans
7 featuring cameraman and director
Josep Maria Domènech; the master class
by Slovak director Peter Kerekes; the Off-
line session of the project Història d'una
francesa i d'un torero by Miquel Àngel
Raió and a case study of Barraques. La
ciutat oblidada presented by the film's
directors Alonso Carnicer and Sara
Grimal and researcher Miracle Tous.

Este año, los cuatro debates programados se
llevaron a cabo en el auditorio de La Pedrera
de Caixa Catalunya. Estos fueron: 7 planes 7
con el camarógrafo y director Josep Maria
Domènech, la clase magistral por el director
Peter Kerekes Eslovaca; el período de
sesiones fuera de línea del proyecto Història
d'Una francesa i d'torero de la ONU de Miquel
Àngel Raio y un estudio de caso de
Barraques. oblidada La ciutat presentada por
los directores de la película Alonso Carnicer y
Sara Grimal e investigador Milagro Tous.
Xtra also featured a number of screenings
that are interesting for their treatment or their
meaning with a joint sessions, with Con
Sandra, by Raúl Cuevas, and Immersió, by
Neus Ballús, and with the Jospeh Morder’s
magnificent J’aimerais partager le printemps
avec quelqu’un, programmed by two young
documentary film critics and filmmakers,

Moreover, this year kicked off a new block

most recent productions. Held within the
framework of the DocsBarcelona Festival,
this focus event forms part of a schedule of
activities organized in cooperation with
Catalan Films & TV.
Lastly, this year, DocsBarcelona hosted the
screenings of the two TV3 Awards 2009: The
Coca Cola Case, by directors Germán
Gutiérrez and Carmen García, and Imma
Serra’s Calidoscopi. 41,2ºN-1,8ºE.

In 1979, as China re-opened its doors to
the West, virtuosos Isaac Stern received
an unprecedented government invitation
to tour the country. This extraordinary
experience became the landmark, Oscar-
winning documentary From Mao to
Mozart – a beautiful expression of two

musician and humanitarian.

During his month-long journey, Stern
conveyed the inner life of Western music,
which had only recently been made

friends”.
Some of the children he had taught have
become master musicians themselves on
the international scene. From Mao to
Mozart is a heartwarming presentation of
Isaac Stern’s incredible cultural odyssey.

Gaza Strip has been under siege since
June 2007, when Israel declared it an
"enemy entity".
A group of international activists
organised a siege-breaking movement,
the Free Gaza movement. Thanks to their
efforts, and despite the Israeli ban on
foreign correspondents and humanitarian
aid workers to cover and witness
operation "Cast Lead" on the ground, a
group of international volunteers: self
organised members of the International
Solidarity Movement were present in
Gaza when the bombing started on
December, 27th 2009.
Together with two international
correspondents from Al Jazeera
International (Ayman Mohyeldin and
Sherine Tadros), they were the only
foreigners who managed to write, film and
report for several radio stations what was
happening inside the besieged
Palestinian strip.
La Franja de Gaza vive en estado de asedio
desde junio de 2007, cuando Israel la declaró
una “entidad enemiga”.
Un grupo de activistas internacionales impulsó
un movimiento, “ Free Gaza ” , que tiene como
objetivo romper ese asedio. Gracias a sus
esfuerzos, y a pesar de la prohibición impuesta
por Israel a todos los corresponsales y
trabajadores de ayuda humanitaria extranjeros
de cubrir y ser testigos directos de la
“Operación Plomo Fundido”, un grupo de
voluntarios internacionales, miembros auto-
organizados del International Solidarity
Movement, estuvieron presentes en Gaza el
27 de diciembre, en el momento justo en que
comenzaron los bombardeos.
Junto a dos corresponsales internacionales de

Were they journalists? Were they activists?
Who cares!. They became witnesses.
Being a journalist or being whatsoever
depends on how you feel. It is an ethical
responsibility that you manage to share
with a wider audience what you and those
who are around you are going through. It
will be the result of your work that will lead
you to a professional career as a journalist
or not, rather than pre-assumptions and
labels. Make them know. Make those who
you want to: listen and be aware of what
you are aware of. That is a journalist.
Having a card, with "press" written on it, or
getting a regular salary is not necessary to
be a witness with a camera or a pen.
Forget about neutrality. Forget about
objectivity.
We are not Palestinians. We are not
Israelis. We are not impartial. We only
try to be honest and report what we see
and what we know. I am a journalist. If
somebody listens, I am a journalist. In
Gaza´s case, no "official journalists" were
authorized to enter Gaza (apart from those
who were already inside) so we became
witnesses. With a whole set of
responsibilities as regarding to it.
¿Eran periodistas? ¿Eran activistas? ¡A quién
le importa! Ellos se convirtieron en testigos.
Ser periodista o ser cualquier cosa depende
de cómo tú lo sientas. Es una responsabilidad
ética que te lleva a compartir con un público

autorización ese 27 de diciembre para entrar
(excepto los que ya estaban dentro), por lo
que nos convertimos en los únicos testigos,

conlleva.
I have always understood journalism as "a
hand turning the lights on inside the dark
room". A journalist is a curious person, an
unpleasant interrogator, a rebel camera and
a pen making those in power feel
uncomfortable. And that is the concept of
my work in Gaza: To fulfil a duty in the most
narrated conflict on earth, where the story
of the siege and the collective punishment
that is being imposed by Israel on the whole
population of the territory in retaliation for
rockets sent by Hamas will never be told
with enough accuracy.
For this it has to be lived. I sneaked inside
Gaza despite Israeli attempts not to allow
us to enter and I was "politely" asked to
leave by those in power in Gaza. That is my
idea of journalism.
Every government on earth should feel
nervous about somebody going around
with a camera or a pen ready to publish
what he or she manages to understand.
For the sake of information, one of the
biggest pillars of democracy.
Yo siempre he entendido el periodismo como
“una mano encendiendo la luz en una
habitación oscura”. El periodista es una
persona curiosa, un interrogador
desagradable, una cámara y un lápiz rebelde
que hacen sentir incómodos a los que están
en el poder. Ésta es la esencia de mi trabajo
en Gaza, cumplir un deber en el conflicto más
narrado de la Tierra, donde, sin embargo,
nunca será contada la historia del asedio y
del castigo colectivo que Israel está
imponiendo a toda la población en respuesta
a los cohetes lanzados por Hamas.
Por ello, debía ser vivido tal como fue. Entré
sigilosamente en Gaza, a pesar de los
intentos de Israel por impedirlo. Los que
están en el poder en Gaza nos “pidieron
cortésmente” que nos fuésemos. Mi idea del
periodismo es eso.
Cada gobierno del mundo debería sentirse
nervioso cuando alguien va por ahí, con
una cámara o un lápiz, dispuesto a
publicar lo que consiga entender. Y todo
ello por el bien de la información, uno de
los más grandes pilares de la democracia.
This is an embedded film. We decided to be
"embedded within the ambulances" opening
an imaginary dialogue with those journalists
who embed themselves within armies.
Everyone is free to choose the side where
they want to report from. But decisions are
often not unbiased. We decided that civilians
working for the rescue of the injured would
give us a far more honest perspective of the
situation than those whose job is to shoot, to
injure and to kill. We prefer medics rather
than soldiers. We prefer the bravery of those
unarmed rescuers than those with -also
interesting, but morally rejectable
experiences who enlist to kill. It is a matter of
focus. I am not interested in the fears,
traumas and contradictions of those who
have a choice: the choice of staying home
and saying no to war”.

Esto es una película de “periodismo
empotrado”. Decidimos “empotrarnos”
dentro de las ambulancias, abriendo un
diálogo imaginario con aquellos periodistas
que se empotran dentro de las ejércitos.
Todo el mundo es libre de elegir desde qué
lado quiere informar. Pero, en muchas
ocasiones, las decisiones no son
imparciales. Decidimos que los civiles que
trabajan en el rescate de los heridos nos dan
una perspectiva mucho más honesta de la
situación que para quienes su trabajo es
disparar, herir y matar. Preferimos médicos
en vez de soldados. Preferimos la valentía
de aquellos rescatadores desarmados a
aquellos que se alistan y que tienen
experiencias tal vez interesantes, pero
moralmente rechazables. Es una cuestión
de enfoque. A mí no me interesan los
miedos, traumas y contradicciones de
aquellos que pueden elegir quedarse en
casa y decir no a la guerra.

Speaker Junkies, founded in 1999 by
Tekno Tom (keytar) and Rezn Tokes
(synths), have evolved from a revolutionary
underground live duo into a complete band
with the addition of Summer Daniels’
vocals and Tempo on drums, pushing and
blurring the lines of live and electronic
music and are set to storm the
mainstream. “We have transformed into a
band that many describe as Gwen Stefani,
Lady Gaga, Fergie, DJ Tiesto and
electro/pop/techno music in a blender,”
explains Tom. Rezn elaborates on their
musical evolution: “I would describe
Speaker Junkies today as futuristic, fun,
upbeat, melodic, edgy, spacey, hard and
energetic.
If you were able to fly a U.F.O. through
space or take a journey through your veins
and the various lobes of your cerebral
cortex you would find that early Speaker
Junkies would be the perfect complement
to that journey.” “Makes you wanna’ dance
all night long!” says Tempo. “We’re an
electro-pop band that knows how to get
‘ish started!” says Daniels, summing it up.

Lawrence), a live performance unique to
their genre and a new self-titled full
length with the infectious single “Shut Up

“Everything we’ve been working toward
all these years is in the hands of the
future. Our dreams can be crushed or
they can be granted,” says Rezn. “But

Who provided the soundtrack to your
corruption as a youth ?
Summer: I grew up around rock and roll
and love Metallica and Guns N’ Roses. I
also love house music ‘cause that’s what
we listened to all the time at gymnastic
practices. My favorite song was “Sweet
Dreams.” I always would sing and play the
piano but everything I played was by ear. I
never had any professional help. I wanted
to become a singer because I’ve danced
my whole life and I love being in front of a
crowd and getting people pumped up!
Every time I’m on stage I feel as though it’s
what I was born to do.
Rezn Tokes: I developed my own musical
interest when I was about 8 or 9 years old.
I mainly listened to metal throughout high
school. Throughout my college years I
listened to a lot of alternative and
underground music. Robert Miles is what
really got me into the dance music scene.
The song “Children” is just so beautiful that
it really inspired me. I wanted to create that
kind of music after listening to his stuff.
Prodigy, Orbital, Daft Punk, Diesel Boy
and Aphex Twin all had to do with my
musical inspirations. I never knew how that
music was created until one of my friends
introduced me to his friend over at USC.
He had a little studio (Mac connected to a
keyboard). He basically showed me how a
keyboard connected to a computer can be
used to create music. I laid down my first
track there and instantly fell in love with the
whole home studio thing. I began talking to
people at Guitar Center for tips and advice
on how to create a home studio
environment. This was the time where I
became a musician.
¿Quien puso la banda sonora de su
corrupcion como su juventud?
Summer : Crecí en torno a rock and roll y
el amor Metallica y Guns N 'Roses.
También me encanta la música de la casa
porque eso es lo que escuchamos todo el
tiempo en las prácticas de gimnasia. Mi
canción favorita es "Sweet Dreams". Yo
siempre cantar y tocar el piano, pero todo lo
que tocaban era de oído. Nunca tuve
ninguna ayuda profesional. Yo quería ser
cantante, porque he bailado toda mi vida y
me encanta estar frente a una multitud y
gente que se bombea! Cada vez que estoy
en el escenario me siento como si es lo que
nací para hacer.
Rezn Tokes : He desarrollado mi propio
interés musical cuando tenía unos 8 o 9
años de edad. Yo escuchaba todo el metal
en toda la escuela secundaria. A lo largo de
mis años de universidad he escuchado un
montón de música alternativa y
subterráneo. Robert Miles es lo que
realmente me metió en la escena de la
música de baile. La canción "Niños" es tan
hermosa que realmente me inspiró. Quería
crear ese tipo de música, después de
escuchar a sus cosas. Prodigy, Orbital, Daft
Punk, Diesel Boy y Aphex Twin todos

Nunca supe lo que la música fue creada
hasta que uno de mis amigos me presentó
a su amigo a través de la USC. Tenía un

Tekno Tom: I liked all sorts of music at a
young age. I loved Nirvana, Depeche
Mode, New Order, Pet Shop Boys,
Beethoven, Chopin, Duran Duran just to
name a few. I guess I turned into a
musician when I was given a piano when
I was 9 years old. My parents were told
by my piano teacher, that starting at such
a late age I wasn’t going to excel like the
other kids. I proved to everyone three
years later doing recitals and playing the
most difficult compositions. I quit piano
lessons at 15 and began teaching myself
and learning the songs I wanted to play.
Tempo: My first influences were the
drummer that played at my father’s club
when I was 10, my father playing acoustic
guitar and my mother singing since I was
a child. I grew up listening to from
everything in the ‘70s that my parents
listened to everything we listen to now.
ABBA, Beatles, Blondie, Queen,
Metallica, G N' R, Poison, Led Zeppelin
Bon Jovi, Michael Jackson, Madonna, the
Smiths and so much more! The transition
from fan to musician was the time I
played my first written song to a crowd at
my first show in Westminster for a
graduation party.
Tekno Tom: Me ha gustado todo tipo de
música a una edad temprana. Me encantaba
Nirvana, Depeche Mode, New Order, Pet Shop
Boys, Beethoven, Chopin, Duran Duran sólo
para nombrar unos pocos. Supongo que se
convirtió en un músico cuando me dieron un
piano cuando tenía 9 años de edad. Mis
padres se les dijo a mi profesor de piano, que
a partir de una edad tan tardía que no iba a
sobresalir como los otros niños. He
demostrado a todo el mundo tres años más
tarde haciendo recitales y tocar las
composiciones más difíciles. Dejé de lecciones
de piano a los 15 y comenzó a enseñar a mí
mismo y aprender las canciones que yo quería
jugar.

Rezn Tokes: My friend and I were at a
rave that was held at the Alexandria, a
hotel in Los Angeles back in 1999.
Once we got to the event, we went
straight to where all the speaker junkies
hung out. We both danced and
meditated in front of a wall of speakers
in the trance room for about five hours. I
kept saying, “We are speaker junkies!”
while pounding the back of a total
stranger with my fists to the beat. I had a
revelation. I told myself I wanted to be
that DJ up there, spinning these sick
tracks and making all these people feel
what I was feeling. That leads up to how
we got the name Speaker Junkies. After
Tom and I decided we were going to
venture into this musical journey
together we
asked each other what we should call
our band. We brainstormed for a while
until this one morning. I woke up one
morning reminiscing about that rave I
went to at the Alexandria hotel. I started
to think about all the speaker junkies
and said to myself, “Ah ha, I’ve got it!”
So I called Tom and told him, “I think I
found our band name!” He goes,
“What?” I said, “Speaker Junkies!” We
both agreed on it and that’s all she
wrote.

 Graffiti began in Gaza in 1987, during the first Intifada, when there was no
Palestinian television or radio in the Gaza Strip, and no newspapers: the messages
that spread along the walls became an important means of communication. Over
the years, all political groups have had their own graffiti artists. Scrawl is not
tolerated—it has to look good. Hamas even offers evening classes in graffiti.

Documenting the writings on the walls of Gaza over a period of seven years,
celebrated Swedish photojournalist Mia Gröndahl lays before us the many roles
that they perform, the colourful and surprising range of their artistic expression,
and their reflection of the changing political situation. And apart from political
slogans, the walls bear witness too to joy and sadness: the wedding celebrations,
the many victims of the conflict, and the ever present hope of peace and freedom.
For us on the outside, Mia Gröndahl’s photographs offer an exciting and
unexpected view of life in Gaza.
Graffiti comenzó en Gaza en 1987, durante la primera Intifada, cuando no había
televisión o la radio palestina en la Franja de Gaza, y los periódicos no: los

Writing graffiti became an important part
of the Palestinian resistance. The
occupying power was well aware of the
graffiti’s explosive potential. The Israeli
military often invaded a refugee camp at
dawn and forced the inhabitants out of
their graffiti-covered houses with the order:
“Wash the walls clean!” But as soon as the
soldiers had disappeared in their jeeps,
the graffiti activists returned with their
battery of paint cans and sprayed new
slogans in the fight for a free Palestine.
 
The attempt to clean the walls would be
repeated many more times. The largest—
and most fruitless – initiative to wash away
Gaza’s graffiti came not from Israel but
from the Palestinians themselves. After
the six-year-long intifada had ended and
Israel and the PLO had signed the Oslo
Accords in Washington in 1993, and as
the Palestinian territories were preparing
to receive Yasser Arafat and his
leadership, the slogans on Gaza’s walls
had to go. The peace process would begin
in an environment scrubbed clean of the
previous era’s warlike graffiti. It was
claimed that the graffiti had also outlived
itself. As a communication channel it was
hopelessly outdated and unnecessary in a
self-governing territory that planned to set
up its own television, radio and printed
press. With a generous contribution of five
million dollars from the Japanese
government, the Palestinian authority set
to work. Paint patrols were dispatched
throughout Gaza to whitewash over
thousands of kilometers of graffiti.
La escritura de Graffiti se convirtió en una
parte importante de la resistencia palestina. La
potencia ocupante era muy consciente del

After just a few weeks it was clear that
the expensive clean-up was completely
wasted. Of course the graffiti came
back. In fact, it spread from wall to wall
like wildfire. The combination of
liberated streets and cleanly painted
walls was irresistible. In the words of
one graffiti artist: “Suddenly all these
naked white surfaces were all over
Gaza, as if the walls had been
prepared especially for us. All we had
to do was to start spraying!”

bushes and trees line the road; people
are out on the streets; we drive past
cars and donkey carts, but nothing
helps. The first impression of Gaza is
depressingly gray.
For this reason, the first explosion of
colour feels like a liberation. More
colour follows as we travel into the
densely populated area. The buildings
are covered with graffiti that dances
along the walls in all the colours of the
rainbow. Scarcely a shabby surface
has been left to its otherwise gray,
silent fate. Gaza’s walls capture my
attention. They cry out in green, red,
black and yellow: Look at us! Read our
messages!"

Mia Gröndahl is a Swedish journalist and
photographer who has been based in the
Middle East since 1996. After five years in
East Jerusalem, she is now living in Cairo.
During her years in the Middle East she has
documented the lives of the Palestinians in

Can you describe the concept behind
the Deep Trip trilogy ?
This Trilogy is a tribute to Dr. Timothy
Leary. The concept behind is to spread
awareness of an idea that is of interest to
all of us. Is the exposure of a single
ideology that can change the whole
society. Its a simple message: If we have
the right to vote for a president, we should
have a right of vote for any decision made
by them.
The trilogy includes contributions from
a large number of artists. How long did
the project take to complete ?
Took me one year to make all the trilogy. I
was not in a rush and I had something in
mind, so I took my time to be sure
everything was fine.
You mention Timothy Leary's
philosophy (not just as an LSD guru but
also a philosopher and free thinker).
Do you see these roles as being
separate or were they more closely
linked ?
LSD opens minds but doesn't mean it is
the inspiration of the free thinkers or
philosophers. Many people know Timothy
Leary as a LSD guru but he was an activist
too. He was the one who stood up and
faced the consequences of his actions in
the name of all of us. Not just on LSD but
on social and spiritual level.
Do you think the trance scene owes a
debt to Timothy Leary ? (in that he
influenced it in a big way ?)
He was a big influence of the psychedelic
movement in the 60s and still influences
the new psychedelic scene. He probably
left some influences like Albert Hoffman
did but I don't say, we owe something to
them. They are just icons of a new
generation.
¿Puede describir el concepto detrás de la
Deep Trip trilogía ?
Esta trilogía es un homenaje al Dr. Timothy
Leary. El concepto detrás es difundir el
conocimiento de una idea que es de interés
para todos nosotros. ¿Es la exposición de
una ideología única que puede cambiar toda
la sociedad. Es un mensaje simple: si
tenemos el derecho a votar por un

Do you think this influence also
crossed over into other areas of art,
e.g. film or computer graphics ?
Psychedelic influences are everywhere
and now they are stronger. Is 3D a
psychedelic influence ? Are fluor colours a
psychedelic influence ? Giger, Dali and
Picasso are pure hallucination ! Federico
Fellini was a surrealist. Before the
discovery of LSD the Mexican Tribes had
peyote and the American Indians was
doing Tribal rituals with mushrooms. They
are the real psychedelic influence. Just
look around you.
Do you think Timothy Leary's message
is as relevant today as it was in the
60's ?
Yes ! If we listen to Timothy Leary's
speech in the 60s about government, you
will notice very little has changed since
then but all depends of your point of view.
For example, if you really believe the rules
and regulations imposed by governments
are for our own good, maybe you don't
agree with me. Its not a case of
conspiracy theory but is more a case of a
reality check !
¿Cree usted que esta influencia también se
cruzaron en otras áreas del arte, por
ejemplo, película o gráficos por ordenador?
influencias psicodélicas están por todas partes
y ahora son más fuertes. ¿Es una influencia
psicodélica en 3D? ¿Son los colores fluor una
influencia psicodélica? Giger, Dalí y Picasso
son pura alucinación! Federico Fellini era un
surrealista. Antes del descubrimiento del LSD
las tribus mexicanas habían peyote y los indios
americanos estaba haciendo rituales tribales
con setas. Ellos son la influencia psicodélica
real. Basta con mirar a tu alrededor.
¿Cree usted que las páginas de Timothy
Leary es tan relevante hoy como lo fue en
los años 60?
¡Sí! Si escuchamos el discurso de Timothy
Leary en los años 60 sobre el gobierno, se dará
cuenta muy poco ha cambiado desde
entonces, pero todo depende de tu punto de
vista. Por ejemplo, si usted realmente cree las
reglas y regulaciones impuestas por los
gobiernos son para nuestro propio bien, tal vez
usted no está de acuerdo conmigo. No es un
caso de teoría de la conspiración, pero es más
un caso de una revisión de la realidad!
How would you define "freedom" in
today's society ?
Under control. You are free to do what
they tell you... Just !
How do you feel the making of the
trilogy went ?
Very well. Of course I have some delays
but that was not a big issue. There were
many people involved in this Trilogy,
Graphic artists, Mastering engineers and
the artists himself, they are all busy
people and not always the things are
ready at the right time. On other hand, I
didn't want to rush no one, I wanted the
things to be made in the right way and to
give them space to work in the most
pleasant way, for I can get then get the
work in the best way too.
What other artists is Lua Records
working with at the moment ?
At the moment Lua Records is in standby.
I still have music producers contacting me
to participate in more compilations but for
now, I want to rewind and make a deep
analysis of all the work. The only thing in
my agenda at the moment is a video that
is being produced by VJ Sub (http://
www.myspace.com/vjsub) He is doing a
40 minutes video about the trilogy.
How has the Internet and social media
changed your work as a record label ?
Internet and social media changes the
work of any artist but in my case, I see
this change as an open door not just to
spread music around the world but to
spread a message too. I think this open
door gives access to a majority of
listeners, so in this case, is better to use it
with some sense and spread some useful
information instead of just fill the space
with unreal topics that don't make any
impact in our social lives. If I do, I do it for
real !
¿Cómo definiría usted la "libertad" en la
sociedad actual?
Bajo control. Usted es libre de hacer lo que le
dicen ... Justo!
¿Cómo se siente la realización de la trilogía
ha estado?
Muy bien. Por supuesto que tengo algunos
retrasos, pero que no era un gran problema.
Había muchas personas que participan en esta
trilogía, diseñadores gráficos, ingenieros de
masterización y el propio artistas, todos ellos
son personas muy ocupadas y no siempre las
cosas están listas en el momento adecuado.
Por otra parte, yo no quería correr a nadie, yo
quería las cosas que se hicieron de la manera
correcta y darles espacio para trabajar de la
manera más agradable, porque pueden obtener
en tiempo real el trabajo de la mejor manera
también.
¿Qué otros artistas es que trabajan con
registros Lua en este momento?
Por el momento Lua Records está en espera.
Todavía tengo contacto con los productores de
música me a participar en más trabajos, pero
por ahora, quiero retroceder y hacer un análisis
profundo de todo el trabajo. La única cosa en
mi agenda en este momento es un vídeo que
está siendo producido por VJ Sub (http://
www.myspace.com/vjsub). Él está haciendo un
video acerca de 40 minutos de la trilogía.
¿Cómo ha de Internet y los medios de
comunicación social cambió su trabajo
como un sello discográfico?

lo hago, lo hago de verdad!
Where can you see the label developing
in the future ?
I hope in virgin soil. At the moment Lua
Records is totally directed for Psychedelic
Music but for me, making the same thing for
the rest of my life means no evolution ! In
this line of thoughts, I can say Lua Records
will have a transformation at some point,
not an ideologic point of view, but on a
musical point of view. I always look for new
music whatever style comes in. Anyway, I
will keep it as an electronic music label,
whatever that can mean, Psytrance,
Industrial, Experimental or any other style
but always, electronic music with a
message.
Is Lua Records connected to
Trancemoon Radio or are they separate
entities ?
Lua Records was born from Trance Moon
Radio. They are connected by some music
style but like everything, both have their
own personality and I didn't want to castrate
Lua Records. For a start, Lua Records was
there to edit new artists coming to Trance
Moon asking for exposure but I have other
plans for Lua Records, one of them was to
promote a personal ideology, the other one
is versatility to change the music direction if
I want to. The same can not happen with
the Trance Moon radios. Trance Moon is an
established Radio network directed only to
Psy Trance and Dark Psychedelic music. I
would say, Trance Moon Radio works for a
community and Lua Records is my personal
project.
¿Dónde se puede ver la etiqueta en
desarrollo en el futuro?
Espero que en el suelo virgen. Por el momento
Lua Records está totalmente dirigida a la
Música psicodélica, pero para mí, lo que hace
lo mismo para el resto de mi vida significa que
no hay evolución! En esta línea de
pensamiento, puedo decir Lua Records tendrá

Music is the universal language. In a
case of a band (more than 1 musician)
they write the music to play. If one of the
band members is not happy with some
part in the song, he talks with the other
members and together they decide if they
will change that part of the song or not, or
maybe they end up finding a better
solution for that part of the song.
This is exactly the same way how
government rules in our days ! They are
the musicians and our lives is their music.
They play, they make changes, they do
arrangements and they take decisions
about us. We need them to manage our
country, not our lives ! We are the
majority and we can do something about
it!

In the context of contemporary culture,
the concept of “crossover” has been well
acknowledged by the general public and
artists, as evidenced in everyday life and
artistic research and practice. “Crossover”
refers to the reciprocal inclusion of and
permeation between different disciplines
and media. The boundaries between
traditionally separate areas have become
blurred, and not one part can exist
independently of others. Strong collisions
and fusions between various elements
and the active involvement and
transformation of participants generate a
personalized, self-synthesizing
organization within the art system. In the
field of visual culture, the notion of
“crossover” has brought about a series of
media, visual, pictorial and cultural
revolutions, providing an opportunity to
rethink and explore the phenomenon of
contemporary visual culture characterized
by an ever changing audio-visual
experience and the constant
reconfiguration of media and their
linguistic implications.
"Verdensteatret - A Media Art Exhibition
from Norway” organized by GDMOA is
another new media art highlight in China
following the "Synthetic Times" media art
exhibition hosted by NAMOC in 2008.
Founded in 1986, the Oslo-based
Norwegian multimedia art group
Verdensteatret (Theater of the World)
attracts artists from different fields. Their
cross-disciplinary cooperation bridges
boundaries among artistic disciplines.
Verdensteatret’s solo exhibition “Telling
Orchestras and Funeral Machines” at the
Guangdong Museum of Art, Guangzhou,
China opened 19 March, and ran until 18
April 2010.
The exhibition presented the large scale
installation works Electric Shadows and
The Telling Orchestra.

One of the fundamental concepts of
Verdensteatret is that “different elements
should blend into one another,” so that
every dramatic element is linked to other
forms in numerous ways. They build
subtle dialogues between seemingly
disparate technologies and art forms. By
combining experimental audio-visual
technology with the traditional medium of
theater to create a new artistic
expression, their work shuttles between
contexts by crossing-over and a
methodology of form without form.
Two large-scale hybrid interactive audio-
video installation works will be on view for
a Chinese audience. This exhibition offers
new possibilities for viewers to broaden
their ways of seeing and thinking, to
explore new forms of expression and
team work in the spirit of the artists, and
to examine art’s integration into an
information society in a global cultural
environment.

ELECTRIC SHADOWS is a composition.
The elements are tied together by
kinship, proximity, simultaneity and the
belief that differing materials appear as a
well moulded whole under the right
circumstance, the composition. Eight
artists of different backgrounds have left
their prints on this work. Ensuring a
multitude of ideas threatening to tear the
work apart, artistic magnitude and in
consequence an articulation of the
composition. Treating the whole room
and everything in it as their material, the
group has created a vast intermedial
composition. Always articulating the
theatrical potential in their material.
This work features a landscape of highly
original sculptures, pre-cinematic
animation, puppetry, music, lights and
shadowplay. All objects produce art and
are also a part in it. The idea of
simultaneous perspectives and multiple
functions tied to each object creates a
work of works.

A delightful amount of possible connections
across media and layers. Some obvious,
planned and controlled. Others seen
bythe single spectator only, weaving her
story, from available threads. It is a
gratifying experience to lend this work time.
Up close, movable miniatures perform in a
theaterlike setting, except everything is
exposed. One sees function and the craft
gone into making it. From a distance the
veil of illusion is drawn and the work takes
on a poetic character, following the
logic of dreams.
Kinetic metal sculptures function as
mechanical devices that perform and
project. It is shadow heater, animation and
puppetry. Light is directed onto and through
miniature glass-figures held by mechanical
arms. The figures perform interplays
in the focal point of a lens and are projected
onto the wall. This combination of light,
glass object and lenses creates an
unusual fine visual quality. The small
platform between the light and the lenses
becomes a tiny stage where the glass-
figures are performers attached to the tip of
small robot-arms.

This platform is the hot-spot or the
gravitational point of the
instrument/sculpture. A “dark-room”
where images emerge and falls apart. A
small laboratory for the spectator to
witness the creation of moving images. A
closer look is a dive into the core of the
physical building of images. Down to
where the image arises, takes on solid
form, twists and winds into constellations
and compounded images. Looking up
again the viewer sees the finished image
projected on the wall. The sculptures are
built using thin materials. See-through,
like leafless trees. Lending themselves
easily to shadowplay when lit up. The
movable lenses and arms become limbs
on an organism.

"FORTELLERORKESTERET" ("The
Telling Orchestra") is a "live" room-
installation that can be described in many
ways: An audio-visual composition where
rusty mechanics meets new technology on
the backside of a "video-shadow-theatre"
on Greenland. A machine, a polyphonic
instrument, or  a whole orchestra with
many voices and tunes,mutating shapes
and interwoven stories. An electro-
mechanical construction that functions as
an audio-visual "animation-machine"or a
mechanical figure-theatre machinery,
where images, sculptures, sound and
video is deeply integrated into each other
to form an audio-visual-spatial
composition.
 
By use of  computer controlled motors and
robotics the primitive wooden construction
of old weather-beaten planks has become
an automatized sculpture-machine with the
ability to in a second, totally transform the
space in radical ways.

"FORTELLERORKESTERET" ("The Telling
Orchestra") es un "vivo" habitación-
instalación que puede ser descrito de

"The Telling Orchestra" has gone
through a constant development for
almost three years and has become a
very advanced and complex
construction. The original concept and
choice of materials originate from a
journey to Greenland in 2003. As the
process went on the different medias
that interplay started to generate
images and stories on their own - as if
the construction itself was hinting to
what it was capable of expressing.
The installation has now become a true
Telling Orchestra that can create
extensive visual tales, mechanical
ballets, mirror- and shadow plays.It can
produce pure abstractions as well as
concrete literary stories, psychological
relations among motorized fragments of
bones. Religious visions from the
roadside, shipwrecks and machine
romance, ä never ending.

In 2007, a team of Russian and Dutch
artists painted walls of houses in one of
the sleeping areas on the North of
Moscow (Elk Island). These buildings
have already stood there about fifty

Sten & Lex are known for their
unusual and so tedious practice of
stencil art which provides an offset
look. Their approach of the street in a
monumental way and the iconic poetry
of their subjects built their current
reputation.
This exhibition marks a step toward
the affirmation of their career, with a
new concept : the «Stencil Poster».
They are now completely challenging
the repeatable nature of stencil art ;
each stencil is unique. Each stencil is
used only once, the stencil itself is
destroyed and is incorporated into the
artwork itself. The ephemeral of the
street reflects the continuity of the
work in the gallery.

Sten & Lex spend dozens of hours to
make a very tedious cutting of their
chosen image, by hand, with the eye,
producing a pattern of multiple small
holes that looks like offset. They call this
technique «hole technique».
As part of the Artcock collective alongside
Rome based artist Lucamaleonte, Sten &
Lex are found of classic Italian culture
ranging from the religious iconography
from the Renaissance to Dante’s
universe. Lex, both model, actress and
muse of her own image, is playing the
role of a Madonna in the constitution of
their work.
Over time, Sten & Lex develop an
iconography concerned with figures from
anonymous photo albums from the 60’s
and 70’s, from here or there. The almost
commonplace aspect of these portraits in
black and white, however, brings us back
to a certain universality that is reminiscent
of the work of Christian Boltanski in the
iconic status of the work.

The “World Bodypainting Festival” is the
largest art event in the bodypainting theme

contains the WBF Academy, Bodycircus &
Side Events and the main days in
“Bodypaint City”, the festival grounds in the

The human skin is the living canvas of a
ta moko artist. The practice of body
tattooing can be linked to several Pacific
countries (in fact the word tattoo derives
from the Tahitian word 'tatu'), but in
Aotearoa the art form evolved in a way
found nowhere else.
When Joseph Banks encountered the
Maori moko en masse on the
Endeavour's first voyage to New
Zealand, he wrote:

Moko is original custom work specially
designed for the individual recipient. This is
because ta moko is meant as a visual
representation of a person's genealogical
links, personal achievements, and
connections to people and places of the
heart. The result is that the process of
creating a moko itself is quite an intimate
experience between the practicioner and
the client.
Ta Moko was like a history of a person's
achievements and represented their status
in their tribe. It was like a resumé. It also
served as a reminder to people about their
responsibility in life. It was a huge honour
for people to have Ta Moko.
Ta Moko was worn by both men and
women. It was applied to the face and
buttocks of men, and to the chin, lips and
shoulders of women. Depending on their
ranking, they may also have Ta Moko on
their face. Occasionally women would put
small markings over their faces or
shoulders as a sign that someone close to
them had died.
Moko es un trabajo original de encargo
diseñados especialmente para el

entiende como una representación visual de

There were no set patterns to the Ta Moko
and the meaning of the Ta Moko was
dependent on its placement on the face.
The left side of the face related to the
father's history and the right side to the
mother's history.
Before the arrival of European settlers, the
complex designs of ta moko were literally
carved into the skin. A rake-like instrument
(uhi matarau), usually made of teeth or
bone, was used to break the skin; then a
flat edged blade (uhi) was used to tap in the
dye, creating a tattoo with a scarred,
chiselled appearance.

The modern tool of ta moko is the
tattoo machine, (mihini moko), although
some ta moko artists alternate between
traditional and modern methods. While
the needle is faster and more precise,
hand tools bring the ritual more in line
with how it was done traditionally.
As New Zealand's Maori people are
rediscovering their heritage, many are
turning towards the art of moko. Ta
moko continues to mean what it has
always meant; it is a symbol of integrity,
Maori identity and prestige, as well as a
reflection of Whakapapa (ancestry) and
personal history.
A national collective of ta moko artists -
Te Uhi a Mataora - was formed in 2000
to preserve, enhance and develop ta
moko as a living art form. Many of
these highly skilled artists come from a
carving background; others specialise
in design. All of them share a deep
understanding of traditional forms and
designs. The collective strives to uphold
ancient traditions while also looking to
the future, as the art of ta moko
continues to evolve.
La herramienta moderna de moko ta es la
máquina de tatuaje, (mihini moko), aunque
algunos artistas ta moko alternar entre los
métodos tradicionales y modernos. Mientras
que la aguja es más rápido y más preciso,

The OSTRALE´010 is presenting for the
4th time the complete spectrum of
contemporary art in the dilapidated
structures of the former Erlwein
Schlachthof in the Ostragehege in
Dresden. The OSTRALE developed in a
very short time to one of the most
important art festivals in Germany and
Europe. The OSTRALE`010 will invite
particularly artists who will deal with the
still on the ground left arisings and bring
them together to new order in the
transformic sense of artistic Rites of
Passage.
More than 200 artists - painters, sculptors,
sound, light, video, concept, installation,
action- and performace artists, will present
International and European, young and
established art on 15.000 m² exhibition
space and 50.000 m² outside area.
The up to now realised exhibitions 2007,
2008 ans 2009 demonstrate in an
impressive way the development of the
exhibition area and the Art Centre of the
OSTRALE. The festival´s popularity attests
as well the importance and the growing
perception of the remarkable project. After
4.000 visitors in 2007 there have been
already 11.000 visitors in 2009 who have
found their way to the OSTRALE and its
exhibitions and events.
El OSTRALE'010 presenta para la 4 ª vez
el espectro completo del arte
contemporáneo en las estructuras en ruinas
de la antigua Schlachthof Erlwein en el
Ostragehege en Dresde. El OSTRALE
desarrollado en un tiempo muy corto a uno
de los festivales de arte más importantes
de Alemania y Europa. El OSTRALE `010
invitará especialmente los artistas que se
ocupará de la todavía en el suelo a la
izquierda surgimientos y unirlos al nuevo
orden en el sentido transformic de los Ritos
de paso artística.
Más de 200 artistas - pintores, escultores,
sonido, luz, vídeo, concepto, instalación, los
artistas a la acción y el performace,
presentará europea e internacional, el arte
joven y se estableció en 15,000 m² de
exposición el espacio y 50,000 m² fuera de
la zona.
Las exposiciones que hasta ahora se dio

Centro de Arte de las OSTRALE. La
popularidad de la ediciónuna lo atestigua

Andreas Hetfeld was honoured with the
jury award of the OSTRALE’09 for his
installation “Raum der Sehnsucht”. Born in
Reutlingen and living in Nijmegen
(Netherlands), Hetfeld creates 30 boats
with old aluminium gutters, which where on
the area of the OSTRALE. These boats
were between 2.50 and 3.40 meter long.
Like a swarm hang these on nylon strings,
poorly illuminated in the big attic of the
Direktorenvilla.

Después de 3 exitosas ediciones de

nuestro evento que se ven reflejadas
en el elevado número de asistentes y
mayor cubrimiento de medios,
presentamos la cuarta edición de La
“Convención Internacional de
Tatuadores Bogotá DC 2010”.

Se ha demostrado que el tatuaje es

una industria creciente que mueve
miles de millones al rededor del
mundo, no solo por el dinero que se
genera de la elaboración del tatuaje
sino también toda la maquinaria que
gira en torno a este.

El tatuaje se ha convertido en un
estilo de vida por lo tanto integra todas
las razas, estratos y niveles
económicos y comerciales. Este año
el evento se llevara a cabo en
Corferias debido que el año pasado el
espacio fue insuficiente para las
personas interesadas tanto en stands
como en asistir al evento. Este año
habrá 89 stands.

The tattoo has become a lifestyle integrating all races, layers and economical and

My VJ name is 249_K (Polo
Vreedenburgh). I'm based in Rotterdam,
Holland. In the year 2002 i started
studying typografie at the Royal
Academie in The Hague.
In 2007, I finished new media design at
the Art Academie in Enschede. In 2004 i
started with VJ'ing. This activity allows me
to combine my tree passions: music,
graphic design and architecture. My goal
is to perform live a utopia of music and
visuals (image and sound).
My sets are in constant evolution. 99% of
what I usually mix is made up of my
creations, which become enriched
weekly. I try to diversify my video
sessions in different graphic types but
keep my own style.
My inspiration comes from various artistic
movements; from animation movies to 3d
design, from architecture to typogafie,
from experimental music to piano parts of
Satie. In the past few years i'm performed
over 50 party's and festivals in Holland
and Europe.
Mi VJ nombre es VJ 249_K (Polo
Vreedenburgh). Estoy con sede en Rotterdam,
Holanda. En el año 2002 empecé a estudiar
typografie en la Academia Real de La Haya.
En 2007, terminé el diseño de los nuevos medios
en la Academia de Arte en Enschede. En 2004
empecé con VJ'ING. Esta actividad me permite
combinar mi árbol pasiones: la música, el diseño
gráfico y la arquitectura. Mi meta es tocar en vivo
una utopía de la música y visuales (imagen y
sonido).
Mi conjuntos están en constante evolución. El
99% de lo que generalmente está compuesto por
la mezcla de mis creaciones, que se enriquecen
a la semana. Yo trato de diversificar mis
sesiones de vídeo en diferentes tipos de
gráficos, pero conservar mi propio estilo.
Mi inspiración viene de distintos movimientos
artísticos, desde películas de animación 3D para
el diseño, desde la arquitectura hasta typogafie,
desde la música experimental a las piezas de
piano de Satie. En los últimos años estoy
realizado más de 50 partido y festivales en
Holanda y Europa.
You started VJ'ing in 2004.  What made
you initially become interested in it?
I started at that time at the art-academy with
making little video clips, and and
experimenting with vj-software to create
some fx. I learned 3d software from a friend
of mine at that time, and a total new world
was opening up for me.
I saw many new possibilities and vj'ing was
one of them. Kees de Groot from Planetart
was sometimes teaching workshops on
school en so he saw my work. He invited
me to play on his planetart party's and there
its was born.
How has equipment (hardware/software)
progressed since you began?
i started with a simple computer build in a
suitcase because a didn't have any money
for a laptop. And i've used the first
Resolume it worked very well at that time.
and now i use 2 laptops, preview screen,
Edirol v4-mixer, Panasonic ave5, and some
midi controllers. the vj software is also
much more powerful as 6 years ago, so
much has changed.
Empezaste VJ'ing en 2004. ¿Qué te hizo
inicialmente se interesó en él?
Empecé en ese momento en el arte-la
academia con la fabricación de pequeños
clips de vídeo, y ya experimentar con vj-
software para crear algunos efectos. Aprendí
3d software de un amigo mío en ese
momento, y un mundo totalmente nuevo se
abría para mí.
Vi muchas nuevas posibilidades y vj'ing era
uno de ellos. Kees de Groot de Planetart a
veces la enseñanza de talleres sobre la
escuela en lo que vio mi trabajo. Me invitó a
jugar en su partido planetart y allí nació su.
¿Cómo ha equipos (hardware / software)
progresado desde que empezaste?
Empecé con un ordenador sencillo construir
en una maleta, porque una no tiene dinero
para un ordenador portátil. Y he utilizado la
primera Resolume funcionó muy bien en ese
momento. y ahora yo uso 2 ordenadores
portátiles, vista previa de pantalla, Edirol v4-
mezclador, Panasonic ave5, y algunos
controladores midi. el software de vj es
también mucho más potente que hace 6
años, mucho ha cambiado.
Can you describe your current live
setup?
My minimal set nowadays is 2 laptops
with Resolume, an Edirol v4 mixer and
a preview screen. My total setup is
changing every time but then i use a
extra mixer, a wireless sound receiver,
extra laptops and midi controllers, but
the more hardware, the more buttons
and the more difficult you make it for
yourself so I like to keep it compact.
Is there any particular equipment
(hardware/software) you would
recommend to other VJ's?
If you have a good laptop you already
can do a nice show , the most
important part of vj'ing is that you
making your own nice visuals; you can
have more then 10.000 euro of
equipment and bad visuals and your
show is still crappy.
¿Puede describir su configuración actual?
Mi selección mínima hoy en día es de 2
computadoras portátiles con Resolume, un
mezclador y Edirol v4 una pantalla de vista
previa. Mi configuración total está cambiando
cada vez, pero luego yo uso un mezclador extra,
un receptor de sonido inalámbricos, ordenadores
portátiles adicionales y controladores midi, pero
el hardware más, los botones más y más difícil
que hacerlo por ti mismo lo que me gusta para
mantenerlo compacto .
¿Hay algún equipo en particular (hardware /
software) que usted recomendaría a otros
VJ's?
Si usted tiene una buena computadora portátil ya
puedes hacer un buen show, la parte más
importante de vj'ing es que usted hacer su propia
buenas visuales, puedes tener más de € 10.000

Architecture features quite strongly in
your work.  Does your background in
architecture and graphic design help you
in your VJ work ?
I've learned to look different to buildings and
objects around me, it inspires me somtimes
when i walk by new buildings, i see the
buildings as 3d shapes and see how the
architect was thinking by designing the
building.
What advice would you give to a rookie
VJ?
Start with making your own visuals, it's
aways difficult in the beginning, but its the
most important part of vj'ing.
What type of parties do you perform at ?
Everyting from underground rave party's till
clubs and lounge bars, but I like raw techno
the most to play on.
La arquitectura es muy fuertemente en su
trabajo. ¿Su formación en arquitectura y
diseño gráfico ayudarle en su trabajo VJ?
He aprendido a ser diferente a los edificios y
los objetos que me rodean, me inspira
somtimes cuando camino por las nuevas
construcciones, veo los edificios como las
formas en 3D y ver cómo el arquitecto
estaba pensando en el diseño del edificio.
¿Qué consejo le daría a un novato VJ?
Comience con hacer sus propias imágenes,
es llevar difícil al principio, pero es la parte
más importante de vj'ing.
¿Qué tipo de partidos no se realiza en?
Todo de metro de la fiesta rave hasta clubes
y bares lounge, pero me gusta el techno
primas más para jugar.

You recently played at the TriPostal
festival in Lille.  How was that
experience?
It was a great festival with a lot of friendly
people and a good line-up. It was only a bit
sad that the screens were hanging on bad
positions, that they did better in 2009.
Where will you be playing in the future ?
I'm busy with planning some party's in
Belgium with vj Videoheadcleaner,
and i want go to Berlin with some dj friends
of mine this summer.

the future?

Animac is the "Mostra Internacional de
Cinema d'Animació de Catalunya",
organised by the Institut Municipal d'Accio
Cultural (IMAC) of the Lleida City Council
and the Catalan Institute of Cultural
Industries (ICIC) of the Generalitat de
Catalunya, took place from 22 to 28
February 2010 in the city of Lleida for the
14th year running.
Over the years, the sample Animac
consolidated its independence, and art.
Created in 1996, throughout its nearly 14

most important audiovisual events in
Catalonia with a significant international

ha consolidado su carácter independiente y

acontecimientos audiovisuales más

aquellos artistas que utilizan la animación

Transgressing and challenging the
boundaries of traditional narrative, for
visionaries independent and risky work to
enhance and enrich the expressive power
of film.
The festival included section such as Petit
Animac (childrens films), workshops, as
well as live concerts and DJ's by night,
and took place over various locations
throughout Lleida including the Llotja,
Café del Teatre, Pub Linia, La Boite and
Fundacio Vall Palou.
One of the highlights of the fesival was
the inclusion of the Puck Cinema
Caravana. Puck is a caravan fitted out as
a cinema. It's belly is a miniscule cinema,
perhaps the smallest in the world, there is
only space for seven people. Puck
shows animation films which are not
usually seen on television.

El festival incluyó las secciónes como Petit
Animac (películas para niños), talleres, así
como conciertos en vivo y DJ's por la
noche, y tuvo lugar durante varios lugares
de Lleida como la Llotja, el Café del
Teatre, Linia Pub, La Boite y la Fundació
Vall Palou.
Uno de los aspectos más destacados del
fesival fue la inclusión de la Caravana
Puck Cine. Puck es un cabo caravana
habilitada como cine. Su vientre es un cine
minúsculo, quizás el más pequeño del
mundo, sólo caben siete personas. Puck
muestra películas de animación que no se
suelen ver por la televisión.

Animac is a place where artists come
together and work, a laboratory in which
generate ideas and establish
relationships between different artistic
disciplines. Animac is the space in which
dreams and stories are planned for the
future.
This year, the Animac has received the
National Prize of Culture 2009 de
l'Audiovisual. The awards were instituted
by the Catalan government in 1982 and
is awarded annually to persons or
entities for contributions or most relevant
activities in each of the respective
cultural fields developed during the
previous year.
Animac 2010 has had two special
guests, the brothers Stephen and
Timothy Quay, reconocidísimos
animation writers internationally, who
have been in Lleida person participating
in the activities, and has scheduled a
retrospective of his work.
The commitment to the art cinema and
talent remains one of the hallmarks of
Animac, and this year has introduced
two new activities aimed at enhancing
new and creative projects: the Campus
and Animac Animac Mentor. Animac
2010 has offered for one week, film
animation, school sessions, concerts
and exhibitions.

reconocidísimos autores de cine de animación
a nivel internacional, que han estado en Lleida
participando en persona en las actividades, y

La apuesta por el cine de autor y el talento
continúa siendo uno de los sellos
característicos de Animac, y este año ha
presentado dos nuevas actividades enfocadas
a potenciar nuevos proyectos y creadores: el
Animac Campus y el Animac Mentor. Animac
2010 ha ofrecido durante una semana,
proyecciones de cine de animación, sesiones
escolares, conciertos y exposiciones.
Animac es un lugar donde se dan cita los
artistas y sus trabajos, un laboratorio en el que
se generan ideas y se establecen relaciones
entre las distintas disciplinas artísticas. Animac
es el espacio en el que se sueñan y se
proyectan las historias del futuro.
Este año, el Animac ha recibido el Premi
Nacional de Cultura 2009 de l’Audiovisual.
Los premios fueron instituidos por el gobierno
catalán en 1982 y se conceden anualmente a
persones o entidades por las aportaciones o
actividades más relevantes en cada uno de los
respectivos ámbitos culturales desarrollados
durante el año anterior.

“Panique au Village”, Stephane Aubier & Vincent Patar
There is a television series that has seduced
and revolutionised European television
production during the last few years, this has
been “Panique au Village” by Stéphane
Aubier and Vincent Patar (Belgium, 2009).
The animation’s irreverent attitude, the
surrealist and anarchic humour, and the
sympathy of its characters and situations
have made it a pleasure for children and
adults.

Digital Graffiti at Alys Beach is the
world’s first projection art festival, with
artists using the latest technologies to project
their original works onto the town’s iconic
white walls.
Sometimes referred to as “Photon Bombing,”
“Guerilla Projection” or “Urban Projection,”
underground artists around the globe have
already been using the latest design,
animation and projection technologies to
cast dynamic images onto skyscrapers and
other urban structures as a means of artistic
expression. But Digital Graffiti at Alys Beach
is the first outdoor festival specifically
organized to celebrate and showcase these
unique talents.
“Our town literally becomes their blank
canvas,” said Kelli Arnold, Alys Beach’s
Events Coordinator.
Each year’s festival attracted digital artists,
filmmakers, musicians, interactive designers,
photographers, VJs, producers, celebrities,
agency executives and fans of art,
technology and architecture. Thousands of
dollars in cash prizes are awarded to artists,
with digital submissions being received from
as far away as Israel, Austria, Canada,
Germany, London, India, France, Italy and
China. The 2008 “Best of Show” prize of
$2,500 was awarded to Robert Seidel of
Jena, Germany for his digital work entitled
“Futures,” while the 2009 “Best of Show”
prize was awarded to “Lure of Sirens” by
Lustre of Venice, California.

Few bands of the German post punk/new
wave era can lay claim to "cult" status, but
DIN A TESTBILD most certainly can.
Formed in 1978 by Mark Eins and Gudrun
Gut, the combo played a significant role in
defining the avant-garde music of Berlin
and were among the pioneers of
Electroclash, long before the genre even
existed. In the year they started out, DIN A
TESTBILD played at the opening of the
legendary Berlin underground club S.O. 36
and in 1980 they appeared at Hamburg's
first "In die Zukunft" (Into the Future)
festival, organized by Alfred Hilsberg.
"Abfall/Garbage", their first single, is
emblematic of the entire West Berlin music
scene from 1978–1982. The group also
participated in the seminal "Geniale
Dilletanten" event at the Tempodrom in
Berlin (1981). Their contribution to German
underground cinema and the art scene
cannot be captured in a few simple words.
Such is the measure of the cult and legend
of DIN A TESTBILD.
Exactly 30 years after the release of their
debut LP "Programm 1" on Klaus
Schulze's IC record label, the Berliners
have picked up the thread of their album
series with "Programm 6" in 2010. Mark
Eins is joined by long-term members Nutty
Norman and Ralf Zimmermann, as well as
Axel Brand, plus guest musicians Gerrit
Meijer, the legendary Berlin guitarist of the
band PVC and vocalist Bettina Schoch.

expressive shouts. All given an extra-
special flair through the sporadic
intervention of industrial instrumentation
such as Gerrit Meijer's metal machine
guitar or Nutty Norman's chaoscillator
and, on occasion, even through Bettina
Schoch's rousing vocals.
The album plays without a pause – DIN A
TESTBILD weave an intense, danceable,
electronic, expressive aural collage.
Digital Sound Art is the name the band
give to their "acoustic backdrop for the
third millenium", a concept which should
not hide the fact that analogue
instruments are very much at play here,
with trash guitar to the fore. Mark Eins
has this to say about his music: "It's not a
question of melodic arcs, but of acoustic
perception and entertainment on the
highest plane. It's about the challenge,
not the standard. Self-discovery, not self-
affirmation in a modern, intelligent world.
Man is far superior to the computers of
this world, because he can feel,
experience happiness, because he
thinks, reflects, can change or continue
his train of thought. Fun and enjoyment
for body and soul, without esoteric
pretensions. Art is entertainment is pop."

Fallout 3 is an action role-playing game
released by Bethesda Game Studios, and
is the third major game in the Fallout
series. I kinda like the concept, and find
the graphic design absolutely stunning.
Fallout draws from 1950s pulp magazines,
science fiction and superhero comic
books, all rooted in Atomic Age optimism
of a nuclear-powered future, though gone
terribly awry by the time the events of the
game take place. The technology is retro-
futuristic, with various Raygun Gothic
machines such as laser weaponry and
boxy Forbidden Planet-style robots.
Computers use vacuum tubes instead of
transistors, architecture of ruined buildings
feature Art Deco and Googie designs,
energy weapons resemble those used by
Flash Gordon, and what few vehicles
remain in the world are all 1950s-styled.
Fallout’s other production design, such as
menu interfaces, are similarly designed to
resemble advertisements and toys of the
Atomic Age. Advertising in the game such
as billboards and brochures has a distinct
1950s motif.
