The Tidal Flats on the southwest coast ofKorea,spread around Gomso,Yeoja and Hamhae bays and the Sinan archipelago,areunique macrotidal flats where typical embayed tidal flats turn into open-coast tidalflats during the monsoons.They have no barrier islands,just like other tidal flats inthe Yellow Sea.During winter,strong waves create sand flats,while in summer,themud flats expand as tidal currents overpower the waves.The Southwestern CoastTidal Flats,including Suncheon Tidal Flats (pictured on this page),were includedon UNESCO’s Tentative List ofWorld Heritage sites in January 2010.
