It’s M.A.P. Reflection Time...
 As we’re approaching the end of another school year, we can look 
 back and see the fruits of our labor. Nixa has been Accredited withDistinction in Performance for
years in a row. That is only possible because of how YOU assess and teach the written curricu-lum in your classroom. Thank you for your continued dedication toour students.The 2010 M.A.P. tests were just returned to the State. This is a goodtime for reflection to help alleviate stress next year. Some questionsto consider are:How was the pacing of teaching the curriculum? Did you havetime to teach all the GLEs?Did you have enough time to review? Too much time?How did you teach the DESE vocabulary? Will you do the samenext year or make changes?How did you use the M.A.P. support offered by the district? Will you do the same next year or make changes?Please contact the education office with any curriculum or assess-ment needs.

Boost Communication Arts Scores
Some Students Learn to Read through Writing
Some students learn to read through reading; somestudents learn to read through writing; some studentslearn to read through phonics. Are you making the most of your writing time? As theend of the year is approaching, consider this forma-tive assessment idea:Post a strong example of student work and have
students work with partners to identify ‘what they notice’ about the posted writing.
 After several minutes of partner discussion, collectresponses on chart paper/Smart Board for an in-classdiscussion. After collecting student responses, assess which of the traits below they noticed.*Idea*Organization*Voice*Word Choice*Sentence Fluency *Conventions
 Add your own observations for that ‘teachable mo-ment.’
Repeat similar assignments. After several days,pass out a copy of a strong writing sample and have
students independently identify ‘what they notice’
about the writing.
In Looking Ahead …
Consider beginning next year with the sameassignment to gauge student writing knowl-edge. The independent assignment could eas-ily be a portfolio piece.
