[Thank MC. Acknowledge guests.] Thrilled to be here today and pleased to be the first oil and gas man in seven years toaddress the club.At least I have long regarded myself as an oil and gas man, and often throughout my career in the UK, Europe, the US and the Middle East, oil has been the focus … but inAustralia, at Santos, and entering the second decade of the 21st century, natural gas isvery much the main game. It’s abundant, available, affordable and Australian. As I will outline today, in the energy-hungry carbon-constrained world we all live in, gasis a very compelling fuel.

I’d like today to focus on the big picture – the global economy, energy markets, and whatthat means for Australia.Asia
is
the engine for global energy growth. We all know this, but looking at the figuresagain is just startling

Asia is expected to account for 47% of global population growth to 2030

52% of global GDP growth

And a remarkable 62% of growth in global primary energy consumptionGrowing populations seek better standards of living, and achieving economic growthrequires more total energy – even as we use energy more efficiently.Over the next 5 years over 500 million people will enter the US$5000 plus annual incomebracket. The majority of them in Asia.
