SOIL INVESTIGATION

REPORT FOR

PROJECT LOCATION ON PLOT NO.1319·30BI AT OUD METHA IN DUBAI

THE FOLLOWING NOTES SHOULD BE READ IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE REPORT

1. The recommendations made and opinions expressed in this report are based on the boring records, the examination of samples and the results of the site and laboratory tests. Possible variations of the underground conditions, not revealed by the current investigation cannot be disregarded. Hence, no responsibility can be held for conditions, which have not been revealed by the boreholes and therefore not contemplated in this report.

2. There are many uncertainties in determining the allowable bearing pressure of the soil. A number of uncertainties can be summarized as the complexity of soil behavior, the lack of control over environmental changes after construction as well as the incomplete knowledge of subsurface conditions. These uncertainties have to be evaluated for each site and a suitable safety factor shall be assigned. As a general rule, the assigned safety factor for sites with limited soil exploration shall be increased since the factor of safety depends not only on the structural information but also on the reliability of soil parameters.

3. This soil investigation report basically follows the British Standard as 5930: 1999, Code of practice for Site Investigations, with recommendations adapted to suit local conditions and practices.

4. It should be noted that the recommehdations and guidance given in this geo-technical report are not mandatory. It is recognized that the practitioner will often need to use alternative methods.

5. The interpretations and recommendations contained in this report are based on the results of the in-situ and laboratory tests performed at the time of investigation. A generalized continuous sub-surface succession has been inferred from these findings, the accuracy of which cannot be assured at locations other than those investigated.

Possible variations of the under ground conditions, not revealed by the performed investigation and therefore not completed in this report can not be disregarded.

6. Our professional services have been performed using the degree of care and skill ordinarily exercised under similar conditions by reputable qualified Engineers. No other warranty, expressed or implied is made as to the professional advice included in this report.

7. This report has been prepared for MIs. KLING CONSULT, in accordance with the terms and conditions of the appointment for Geotechnical Engineering Services (Request No.Q226 dated 19th June 2006). A.HAM (AI Hai & AI-Mukaddam) cannot accept any responsibility for any use of or reliance on the contents of this report by any third party.

REPORT REF SR/0606226 I DATE JULY 13, 2006
PRO J ECT NAM E PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT
PROJECT ~OCATION ON PLOT NO.{319·30S1 AT OUD METHA IN DUBAI
REPORT FOR
SOil INVESTIGATION 1. INTRODUCTION

Upon the instructions of MIs. KLING CONSULT, the following soil investigation works were carried out on the site of the proposed (3B+G+5 Floors+ Roof) Building On Plot No.(31 9-308) at Oud Metha in Dubai.

The main objective of this investigation is to provide information on the existing soil and groundwater conditions in order to derive recommendations on the most suitable foundation design for the structure.

2. REGIONAL GEOLOGY

The general geology of the UAE has been substantially influenced by the deposition of marine deposits associated with the continuous sea level changes during the relatively recent geological time. Moreover, with the existing mountainous geology across the UAE the country is considered to be of relatively low-lying area.

The geological conditions in Dubai essentially consist in general of a linear coastline dissected by creeks. Superficial deposits consisting of beach dune sands with marine sands and silts. Furthermore, erosion, capillary rise phenomena as well as evaporations have led to extensive silt deposits in some areas especially near to the creeks. These superficial deposits underlined by alternating layers of calcaranite, carbonate sandstone, sands as well as cemented sand layers.

3. FIELD WORK

Field work commenced on the 04/07/2006 and was completed on the 09/07/2006. The scope of work consisted of drilling a total number of four boreholes down to a depth of 30 meters each. The investigation layout is provided in the site plan included in the annex of the report.

The drilling procedures adopted during the investigation are those specified in the Code of Practice for Site Investigation BS 5930: 1999, unless otherwise stated.

The borehole log sheets of the drilled boreholes are presented in the annex of this report.

4. LABORATORY TESTING

Tests on soil and ground water samples were carried out in accordance with the following standard test methods:

1. Particle size analysis of soils as per BS 1377: Part 21990 - AMD 9027 (96) Test 9.2.

2. Sulphate content of soil & water as per BS 1377: Part 3: £10 - Clause 5.3 & 5.4 - 9028 (96).

6. Direct Shear Test as per BS 1377: Part 3: 1990 - cI 9028

5. CONCRETE FOR FOUNDATIONS

The sulphate content reported as (S04) of the tested soil samples were in the range of 0.25 to 0.37g/l with corresponding water samples concentration in the range of about 1.44 gil (grams per liter). Furthermore, the chloride contents reported as (CI) for the tested soil samples were in the range of 0.03 to 0.10% with water samples concentration of in the range of 5.27g/l (grams per liter). The pH value of the tested soil and water samples varied between 7.4 & 8.6. (please refer to Annexes of summary of chemical analysis).

Moreover, for guidance to a suitable concrete design it is highly recommended that reference should be made to "The Guide to the Construction of R.einforced Concrete in The Arabian Peninsula, 2002" where this CIRIA publication considers both sulphate and chloride contamination of soils as well as ground water in various exposure conditions and not restricted to sub-surface concrete

r

Based on the above it is considered that Exposure conditions d (III) would be applied for the site with the following general criteria:

Minimum cement content for 20mm aggregates (Kg/m3) Maximum water/cement ratio

Minimum cover for reinforcement (mm)

320-400 0.42 40-50

In addition to the above, it is highly recommended that the outer surface of concrete be protected with a water proof coating or membrane.

It is highly stressed that appropriate consultation with a concrete technologist is advised and that the Structural Engineer should be consulted as well prior to adopting a mix design,

PROJECT NAME PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT
PROJECT LOCATIOt-l ON PLOT NO.(319·308) AT OUD METHA IN DUBAI
REPORT FOR
SOIL INVESTIGATION 6. SITE AND SOIL CONDITIONS

[J The proposed development will consist of a (3B+G+5 Floors +Roof) Building.

o It is to be noted that the site was used as an open car park for the neighboring Plots at the time of this investig atio n.

o The site of the proposed development was almost flat & accessible with difference in ground elevations in the range of about 20 em with an average existing ground level almost the same as (0.0) ~eference level at the location of the drilled boreholes (please refer to the attached site plan).

Q The (0.0) reference level was taken as the asphalt road level (please refer to the attached site pian).

o At the time of drilling, the water table level was encountered at depths of about 4.45-4.60 meters below the existing ground level of the drilled boreholes. Please note that the water table level is affected by seasonal and tidal changes as well as de-watering operations if any.

o It is to be noted that the drilling process can affect the level of the ground water measured in the borehole, particularly when drilling is performed, since water is used as a drilling fluid. Hence, the water table level recorded in the boreholes during boring does not necessarily indicate the actual level of the water table. Furthermore. Piezometer should be installed in-order to obtain a true indication of water table level throughout long-term ground water observation.

o The four drilled boreholes showed some differences in the degree of compactness of the investfgated soil layers within the drilled depths of the boreholes.

[J It is to be noted that loose soil layers with SPT values as low as 6 were encountered at depths between 3.8-4.7 meters below the existing ground level at the location of the drilled boreholes N01 & 3.

o It is to be noted that loose soil layers with SPT values as low as 6 were encountered at depths between 10.0-11.0 meters below the existing ground level at the location of the drilled boreholes N02.

o The investigated soil consisted in general of light brown to brown, locally light gray to gray, silty, slightly gravelly, fine to medium SAND, locally clayey between 0.5-1.7 at the location of the drilled borehole Nos. 3& 4, interbedded by layers of light brown to gray, slightly silty to silty, sandy, fine to coarse, weak, sub-angular, sandstone GRAVEL with some cobbles with the presence of shell fragments within the top 0.7 meter at the location of the drilled borehole No.1' as well as light brown to brown locally yellowish brown, weak, sandstone cobbles between 6.0-8.8 meters, 14.7-15.90, 19.6-22.0 at the location of the drilled borehole No.3 and between 5.60-9.50 meters at the location of the drilled borehole No.4. (Please refer to the attached borehole log sheets).

SOIL INVESTIGATION o It is to be noted that MADE GROUND layers were encountered within the top 0.2 meter of soil at the location of the drilled borehole Nos. 2 &4.

o It is to be noted that a reddish brown, sandy, silty CLAY layer was encountered between 22.8-23.15 meters below the existing ground level at the location of the drilled borehole No.1.

o It is to be noted that the two boreholes were drilled at the locations specified by the client's Engineer in the tender drawings.

7. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Taking into account the previous mentioned points, this section covers recommendations for foundation design.

7.1. RAFT FOUNDATIONS

Raft foundation is recommended to be used to support the loads of the proposed structure. The allowable bearing capacity of soil under such a raft placed at an elevation of about 10.0 meters below the (0.0) reference level or deeper can reach value as high as 400 kN/m2 provided that the following procedure is adopted:

>- Dewatering the site to a depth of 1 meter below the proposed foundation level. >- Excavate the top soil to the proposed foundation level.

>- Level and compact the revealed surface using a heavy roller compactor to a minimum of 98% proctor maximum dry density.

>- If the above is conducted properly, the allowable bearing capacity of soil under raft foundation placed at the proposed foundation level can reach values as high as 400 KN/m2. Further testing consisting of In situ Density Tests as well as plate load tests at the final layer are required in order to determine the degree of soil compaction and thus the allowable bearing capacity achieved prior to the casting of the raft foundation.

2- It is to be noted that the range of modulus of sub-grade reaction of soil under raft foundation which may be used in the design depends on many factors such as the width of loaded area, shape of loaded area,

!

depth of loaded area, position of the footings, etc.... Hence, it can be concluded that there is no single

value for Ks even if the above factors are defined because of the relationship between q and 0 which is nonlinear.

Furthermore, according to ACI code (1988), the value of Ks varies from 0.5 to 5-10 times the computed value based on the equation Ks = q/&.

Based on the above, Ks can be taken in the range of about 35,000-65,000 KN/m3•

Finally, please note that only the Plate Load Test can give the exact value of the modulus of sub-grade reaction.

REPORT FOR
SOil INVESTIGATION 7.2 PILE FOUNDATIONS

Bored cast in-situ pile foundations may be used to support the loads of the proposed development. Such piles could bear on the relatively hard strata found at a depth of about 27.0 meters below (0.0) reference level. The capacity of such piles is a function of both skin friction and tip resistance. The following Table may be used as a tentative guide on the compressive static working load capacity of piles considering a pile cut off level at an elevation of about 10.0 bellow the (0.0) reference level.

PilE DIAMETER (MM) TENTATIVE VALUES FOR WORKING LOAD (KN)
600 1600
700 2200
800 2600
900 3300
1000 3900
1200 5200 Since the capacity of cast in-situ reinforced concrete piles depends on the type and method of casting of such piles, it is the responsibllity of the specialized piling contractor to verify the tentative values recommended in our soil investigation report by conducting pile load tests (Dynamic as per ASTM D4945 - 00 or Static as per ASTM D 1143 - 81 Re-approved 1994 e1) on instrumented pilot and/or working piles.

Care should be taken when drilling cast-in-situ piles not to disturb or loosen the end bearing strata and to maintain direct and firm contact between the stratum and the piles. Otherwise, excessive and unaccounted settlements may occur on initial loading.

It may be noted that for bored cast-in-situ piles, settlements of the order of 1 % of the pile diameter is normally required to mobilize full skin friction whereas full end bearing is developed at much higher settlements (usually at about 10% of the pile diameter). Hence, the above mentioned pile capacities are based on full skin friction and partial end bearing.

It is highly stressed that cross-hole sonic logging tests to be performed in-order to check the concrete integrity since CSL method is the most accurate quality assurance method for defect identification in drilled shafts. CSl testing provides assurance that the foundation concrete is sound and also hardened as velocity to the 4th power is proportional to concrete strength.

Finally, it is to be noted that bored or augured shafts may suffer from separation of concrete, necking, inclusions, voids etc. After installation, large lateral movements due to lateral impacts, construction equipment, or slope or retaining wall failures may damage shafts. Hence, it is highly recommended that every pile be tested for its integrity as per ASTM 05882-00 or any other method statement approved by the Engjneer. Suspect shafts may be subjected to further tests and if necessary repaired or replaced.

SOIL INVESTIGATION 7.3 DESIGN PARAMETERS FOR RETAINING STRUCTURES

Based on the results of the drilled boreholes the following tabulated soil parameters can be used as a general guide for the design:

Depth ~ A~~rage SPT Average Angle of Internal Ko Ka Kp
BelowE.G.L N value) Friction
Top 5m of soil 23 35° 0.43 0.27 3.70
From 5 to 10 m 50 42° 0.33 0.20 5.00 *Coefficient presented in the above table assumes normally consolidated soils and zero wall friction and therefore tend to provide conservative values.

8. CONSTRUCTION SUPERVISION

L -:

An experienced geotechnical engineer should be present on site to oversee all earthworks and foundation construction activities. In particular, it is recommended that a qualified geotechnical engineer be present, prior to foundation construction, to ensure that the contact surface of the piles is properly prepared, inspects all foundation works including the testing of the material used during the execution of the piles (i.e, bentonite slurry, steel, concrete, etc ... ) to ensure that the works are carried out according t6 the project specifications.

Finally. it should be noted that geo-technical and structural considerations pertaining to the overall foundation design (such as pile group effects. long term settlement. etch.) are outside the scope of this report and it is assumed that others considered them

S.P.T .• Standard Penetration Test. A 50mm diameter split spoon sampler is driven 450mm in the soil using a 65kg hammer with 760mm drop, and the penetration resistance is expressed as the number of blows required to obtain 300mm penetration below an initial penetration of 150mm through any disturbed ground

at the bottom of the borehole

S.P.T.(C) - Standard Penetration test with Cone. A test conducted usually in coarse granular soils using the same procedure as for the SPT but with a 50 mm diameter. 60° apex solid cone fitted to the split spoon sampler.

TCR· Total Core recovery Core recovered as a percentage of length drilled.

ROD - Rock quality designation. Length of core recovered as solid full diameter core pieces in lengths greater than 1 Ocms expressed as a percentage of length drilled.
