North Carolina Rottweiler Rescue is very pleased to be embarking on a new and excit-ing fundraiser endeavor. Triangle Towne Center Mall on Capitol Boulevard in Raleighhas constructed a topiary made of petunias. This topiary is a 20

25 foot dognamed...you guessed it Petunia. The goal of this fundraiser is to raise awareness forthe many homeless animals in our area. From May 13
-
July 31 we will be selling cook-ies donated by Gourmutts bakery for $1.00.

CARE is a collation of (18) participatinganimal protective organizations located in The Triangle region. Starting May 13, theirmembers and volunteers will be selling a custom produced dog treat produced anddonated by Gourmutt’s Bakery, a Raleigh
-
based pet treat maker. Each peanut butterflavored treat will cost $1 with 100% of all proceeds being donated to the T
-
CARE or-
ganizations. Treats will also be sold at the Welcome Center at Triangle Town Centerduring normal shopping hours. The Petunia Project is inspired by “Puppy”, the 42
-
foot
flowering topiary that welcomes visitors to the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain. The Raleigh version is an amazing combination of sculptural genius, engineering skilland horticultural imagination. It was commissioned in 2004 and is the work of localsculptor Greg Osbeck who, along with a team of as many as 12 assistants worked onbuilding the giant topiary sculpture for more than four weeks. When finished on May13, Petunia will weigh over 5,000 pounds, be groomed with more than 32,000 flowers, consume 10 gallons of water a day and shine as a beacon for homeless pets. She willremain on display at Triangle Town Commons for most of the summer, depending onlocal climate conditions. T
-
C.A.R.E. organizations will also conduct pet adoption eventsat Petunia’s “home” in Triangle Town Commons throughout the summer.

Be a Lifesaver: Disaster Planning CanSave Your Pet in an Emergency

Disasters come in all forms. No matter where you live, the unexpected can occur. From blizzards to
wildfires, earthquakes to
hurricanes, emergencies happen every day in all parts of the country, which means that everyone should have a disaster plan
for their family
including their pets.
"It's crucial to make plans ahead of time to ensure your pets' safety in times of disaster," says Betsy McFarland, HSUS direc-tor of communications for companion animals. "Whether it's a natural disaster or a terrorist attack, you must have a plan inplace. Pets depend on their caregivers to provide for their safety and well being. Putting a disaster plan into place is just pa
rtof being a good pet caregiver."

Remember that gooddisaster planning
takes every possibility into consideration. For example, traffic accidents involving haz-ardous trucks can close streets and neighborhoods many miles away—what will you do if you can't get home to care for yourpet? Make plans ahead of time. Arrange for a trusted neighbor who is frequently at home to evacuate your pets if an evacua-tion order is issued and you are at work. Keep a three
-
day supply of your pet's food, medicines, leash, veterinary records, andother necessities altogether in a pet carrier that's ready to go.

These are just a few tips for those looking for information on disaster and emergency preparedness. For more information,
visitThe HSUS Disaster Center
.

Whether it's a tornado, a traffic accident or a terrorist attack, preparedness can help save lives. Pets are part of the family
and
it's imperative that they be included in all family disaster plans. Remember, they're counting on you.

Are You Prepared? Find out by taking our test:

Imagine that a police officer knocks at your door. A hurricane is quickly approaching, and you have 45 minutes to evacuate.

If You Have Pets:
1.

Can you gather all your pets and put them into pet carriers in time? Do you have carriers for all your pets?

2.

Are all your pets wearing collars and ID tags with their name, your name, your telephone number, and an emergency tele-
phone number?

3.

If your cat escapes the cat carrier and becomes lost, could you provide a photograph?

4.

Do you know where you can go with your pets in the event of an emergency evacuation? Do you know of any pet
-
friendly motels nearby? Do you know where your local emergency animal shelter is located?

Do you have your veterinarian's telephone number on your list of emergency numbers in case your dog or cat becomes ill?
