LEADERSHIP STIPENDS

2016-17 BUDGET PROPOSAL -- ACCOUNT 2320

OVERVIEW
In an effort to provide professional learning and leadership opportunities to teachers, extend the reach of great
teachers, and retain great teachers in the district, Human Resources & Talent Services and Leadership and
Learning are again requesting $1.42 million for teacher leadership stipends.
In 2015-16, teacher leaders took on many different roles, including leadership team members, new teacher
mentors, and department/grade chairs, among others. Principals were also required to pay a set amount to deans
and instructional coaches.
For the 2016-17 school year, there will no longer be a requirement that principals allocate set amounts to deans
and instructional coaches, although these roles are still eligible for leadership stipends. Instead, principals will be
required to allocate at least some portion of leadership stipends to recognize teachers who are supporting new
teachers through coaching, mentoring, or as a new teacher PLC (Professional Learning Community) lead.
Like last year, each school will be allocated $15.25 per student (minimum of $5,835 per school, with small, nontraditional schools receiving a flat $2,500) that must be used for leadership stipends.

INVESTMENT

$1.42 million (no increase from 2015-16)

WHERE IT GOES
Leadership roles eligible for stipends include:

Lead teachers such as content team chairs or leadership team members Principals estimate the
time the teacher will spend in the role and multiply by average hourly rate ($29.81); the district will provide
guidance around estimating the stipends for specific roles.
Teachers working to support new teachers Principals use the same process as above to estimate costs
($29.18 multiplied by the number of hours) for mentoring, coaching, etc. The exact components of the new
teacher supports will be determined by the principal, but principals are required to use a portion of the
leadership stipends for new teacher supports.
Multi-Classroom Leaders (teachers who both teach students and coach other teachers,
maximizing the impact of great teachers) Multi-Classroom Teachers receive $1,500 per teacher
assigned to them (maximum of 4 teachers, totaling $6,000).
