Project Focus
White Light/White noise

A project that has been a

major inspiration of mine
due to its specific
detailing (since first
year) is ‘White light/White
Noise.’ It is light and
sound installation that
interacts with its users,
made especially for the
opening of the Athens
summer olympics 2004. (1 of

shown again a year later at
MIT University. I feel this

Communication

To properly understand use of land,

size difference, and relation, I put
together a small paper and card model
communicating the installation design
and how it interacts with users.

The model does not contain the

exact amount of fiber optic
light stalks as there are in the
real installation, but this is
only a smaller representation.

Detail - Michelson
Standard experimental setup for
the Michelson Interferometer.
“The Michelson interferometer
produces interference fringes by
splitting a beam of
monochromatic light so that one
beam strikes a fixed mirror and
the other a movable mirror. When
the reflected beams are brought
back together, an interference
pattern results.” This is the
precise system used to interfere
with light, and since only 1 arm
of the Michelson system is used
to project and split light
beams, it is less complicated.

"White noise, like white light, is an aggregation, composed of all possible
sounds, just as white light encompasses all possible colors, The gentle
murmur of 'White Noise/White Light' forms a place of sonic refuge within the
bustling city," she says, noting that the unique sound-scape masks out other
noises of the city.

"The city's sounds are recorded, remixed and curated into an interactive
landscape," she continues. "Overheard conversations are mixed in with readings
from Greek literature. The sound of traffic is juxtaposed with inaudible
frequencies in the city. ...Visitors and citizens can experience the city in a
new way, tracing its aural present and its recounted past."
