The Pope Speaks

28April 2010
Feast Of Saint Paul of the Cross
“To my mathematical brain, the numbers alone make thinking about aliens perfectly
rational,” Stephen Hawking said. “The real challenge is to work out what aliens might
actually be like.” How many will now believe there must be life in outer space. As
Catholics, we know that there are Angels and beyond space there is Heaven where
Almighty God lives and where we will some day go, if we do His holy will. But is there
life on the planets or surrounding the stars? The Vatican II Church, which operates
several observatories has declared about two years ago, said that the vastness of the
universe means it is possible there could be other forms of life outside Earth, even
intelligent ones. The director of the Vatican observatory said believing in extra terrestrial
life "doesn't contradict our faith" because aliens would still be God's creatures.
Tomorrow we will consider what the Catholic Church has to say about all of this.
Should we take the statements of modern science as 'Gospel' as many do? Are they even
certain of their own statements, or are they taking them on 'faith', while criticizing us for
our own Faith in Jesus Christ?
