INTRODUCTI
ON

INTRODUCTION

HCL Enterprise is the leading Global Technology and IT enterprise that comprises of
two companies listed in India - HCL Technologies & HCL Infosystems. The 3-
decade-old enterprise, founded in 1976, is one of India's original IT garage startups.

Its range of offerings spans Product Engineering, Custom & Package Applications,
BPO, IT Infrastructure Services, IT Hardware, Systems Integration, and distribution
of ICT products.

HCL has global partnerships with several leading Fortune 1000 firms, including
leading IT and Technology firms. Hindustan Computers Limited, also known as
HCL Enterprise, is one of India's largest Electronics, Computing and Information
Technology Company. Based in Noida, near Delhi, the company comprises two
publicly listed Indian companies, HCL Technologies and HCL Infosystems.

HCL was founded in 1976 by Shiv Nadar, Ajai Chowdhry and four of their
colleagues. HCL was focused on addressing the IT hardware market in India for the
first two decades of its existence with some sporadic activity in the global market.

In 1981, HCL seeded a company focused on addressing the computer training

industry, NIIT, though it has currently divested its stake in the company.

In 1991, HP took minority stake in the company (26%) and the company was known
as HCL HP for the five years of the joint venture.

On termination of the joint venture in 1996, HCL became an enterprise which

comprises HCL Technologies (to address the global IT services market) and HCL
Infosystems (to address the Indian and APAC IT hardware market). HCL has since
then operated as a holding company.

The HCL team comprises approximately 62,000 professionals of diverse

nationalities, who operate from 18 countries including 365 points of presence in
India. HCL has global partnerships with several leading Fortune 1000 firms, including
leading IT and Technology firms.

After creating a new wave with computing in India - at a time when there were only
about  250 computers in the country as a whole, HCL ventured into creating  Career
development centers – the first of its kind in India.

It may be summoned up that the Rs11,648 crore turnover company entered the
rewarding IT education line in 2006 and focused on the retail segment with its 30
centers branded HCL Career Development Centers (HCL CDC).The purpose was
to have a constant puddle of qualified professionals for the industry.

2
The IT boom in India has caused a brutal dearth of high-skilled ICT engineers. With
HCL CDCs, HCL anticipates to play a leadership role in enlarging the talent pool
available to organizations deploying IT in India.

The faculties are industry experts and veterans which have nearly over thirty years of
HCL experience in IT software, hardware, and networking and system integration.

The information technology training sector in India is witnessing a boom, aggravated

by a talent crisis, dearth of employable graduates and all-round need for trained
manpower at all levels.

The Information Technology (IT) education and training sector has been the pioneer
in imparting professional training in India. With a growing need of IT professionals,
plethora of technologies and products and consequent continuing education
requirements, presently the Indian IT training industry is booming.
The Indian IT training market is currently estimated to be worth $477 million of which
around 10 percent pertains to corporate training of around $47 million.
The IT corporate training market however is growing at a faster pace and this year it
is expected to grow at 40 percent. Over the next three years it is estimated to be a
$236 million market.

However, based on current trends, the supply of software professionals is projected

to be 885,000 by 2008. This suggests that there may be a shortfall of 235,000
software professionals by 2008.With the demand supply gap growing there are
abundant opportunities for a good scalable and sustainable business model.

HCL is today a leader in the IT industry, employing 62,000 professionals, has a

global presence in 23 countries spanning locations in the US, Europe, Japan, Asian
& the Pacific Rim and a pan India presence across 365 points.

To say that HCL is a household name in India today is an understatement. In 33

years of existence, the company has developed and implemented solutions for
multiple market segments, across a range of technologies, covering customers in
India and overseas.

HCL dominates the IT space as a leader. 62,000 gifted professionals, a colossal US

$5 Billion turnover, an international presence in 18 countries, and most importantly
a deep-rooted commitment to innovate, makes it a true Technology Giant.

The HCL Group is today considered to be an outfit that has the knowledge and skills
in almost every part of the world of information technology. Present in every sphere
of the IT world, HCL’s human resources have helped it advance so far ahead in this
field—in India as well as abroad—that today it has grown in size and stature to
become India’s top IT company, with market leadership in different areas of

13
operations. The group is also considered as the first Indian transnational IT
Company.

An immense knowledge base and technology leadership are the keys to HCL’s
ability to provide total IT solutions.

HCL started operations primarily as a hardware company when IT in India was in a

nascent stage. There were few Indian vendors then and HCL had the
advantage of positioning itself as the local hardware vendor. This meant that the
user was comfortable dealing with a local company, thus the comfort level of users
increased manifold while dealing with HCL. HCL understood the market well,
whereas MNC vendors were not so comfortable doing business in Indian conditions
and did not understand the psyche of the Indian user. Thus, HCL was able to expand
channels at a much faster rate and increased penetration.

Due to inherent knowledge about India, HCL was able to penetrate deep into the
government sector and tap most of the IT spending coming from various government
departments. HCL was flexible enough in pricing, its sales model and terms and
conditions, which added to the comfort of its clients. Sales teams at HCL have
always been highly objective-driven and focused on numbers. Every month/quarter
they measure the performance of our managers by the number of times they have
met the customers face-to-face.

Whether it’s software, hardware, training, networking, telecom, peripherals or system

integration, HCL has an answer for all your IT needs—thanks to its pool of
competencies. The company also has skills in the areas of hardware, and services
extend from product designing to prototyping, manufacturing and support.
Specialization in designing custom-made solutions for companies includes
application development for client/server environments, legacy system maintenance
and re-engineering, migration, systems redevelopment, onsite and offshore software
services, and facilities management.

Computer-based education using advanced learning methodology has training on

offer for novices as well as professionals, in IT and non-IT areas. A dedicated
14
independent vendor channel for the entire Indian mass market helps bring
technology usage closer to the individual. The group specializes in consumer-
oriented, globally applicable solutions for end-users in manufacturing Banking and
financial services, and the telecom segment; besides being a total solution
, provider for technology-based communication services through satellite
communication, radio communication, local area networks as well as broad band
communication. HCL has played a major role in creating IT awareness in the country
and in creating a very competitive environment for growth of the IT industry. The
biggest contribution of HCL in developing the Indian IT market is in terms of
introducing newer technologies and creating a market for them through education
and creation of awareness.

All of HCL’s expertise is centered on anticipating and fulfilling the needs of the
individual in all spheres of his life. The group achieves this by providing a complete
array of IT solutions that make life simpler and better. The company has been
leveraging its core competencies to develop new technologies and solutions that
pre-empt changing consumer needs. To complement its strengths in global state-of-
the-art technology, HCL, in the past, has had joint ventures with international
corporations such as Hewlett-Packard, Perot Systems, Deluxe Corporation, James
Martin & Co., and General Instrument, and also partners with world leaders like
AT&T and Microsoft. And finally, forming the core strength of HCL is the talent and
innovativeness of its people, which enables it to provide the right solutions at the
right time.
HCL has always been proactive in understanding the market well. Thus, it always
anticipates the market demand well in advance and offers products/services
accordingly.

The company has reported consolidated revenue of Rs 3108.3 crores during

the quarter ended June 30, 2007 taking consolidated revenues for the year to Rs.
11855.4 crores.

17
Successfully shedding off its unidirectional ‘hardware’ image, HCL
Infosystems has come a long way, boasting of a presence across the entire
spectrum of the IT industry.

With an end-to-end services and product portfolio, the company operates across
the domains of hardware, software and networking. This makes it a total
technology integrator.

While offering a wide array of products ranging from PCs to workstations and
business servers, the company also leverages its expertise in total technology
solutions and services to offer value-added services in key areas like SAP
implementation, software applications, networking consulting and management
and a range of support services.

June 30, 2007 taking consolidated PAT for the year to Rs. 316.0 crores, a
growth of 13%.

And helping the company gain leadership position in all these segments
(particularly PCs) was its huge channel infrastructure of over 1,000 support
engineers, coupled with a strong brand image. The company’s strength lies in
the government segment, which contributes a lion’s chunk of HCL Insys’
revenue share.

19
SERVICES

Capturing both ends of the market spectrum—enterprise solutions and PCs—

HCL Insys has made significant strategic infrastructural investments in the
Professional Services Organisation (PSO), the Support Service Organization
(SSO) and in its manufacturing plants at Noida and Pondicherry.

Hardware is today considered as one of the key components of the total

solution by the company. The build-up of the services business (both PSO and
SSO) enables HCL Insys to offer complete solutions as well as raise
manufacturing volumes to internationally competitive levels.

Established in 1994, Professional Services Organisation (PSO) provides

consulting, project management, facilities management, software development
and systems integration, as well as centres of excellence for providing IT
solutions in manufacturing, telecommunications, finance and banking
industries.

An increasing focus on integrated enterprise solutions has strengthened

HCL Infosystems’ SSO’s capabilities in supporting installation types ranging
from single to large, multi-location orders. The SSO comprises a direct support
force of over 800 members, and is operational at 151 locations across the
country and is the largest such human resource of its kind in the IT business.

HCL provides three indigenously developed and manufactured PC brands

—’Infiniti’, ‘Busybee’ and the ‘Beanstalk’. A fully integrated and business-
ready intranet family of servers and workstations, the ‘Infiniti’ line is targeted at
medium and large companies to help them to manage their intranet-related
applications.

20
On the other hand, the Frontline division of HCL Insys’ markets national
and international brands of computer systems (including Toshiba notebooks)
and peripherals within the country. With its extensive network of 800 resellers
across 300 cities, the Frontline division has actively promoted the penetration of
PCs in the home and the small office/home office (SOHO) segments.

With an aim of becoming a dominant player providing global IT services,

HCL Insys has reorganized and consolidated its hardware and services
businesses. Towards this, it has set up overseas subsidiaries in the US, UK,
Singapore, Malaysia and Australia.

Over the years the company has been experiencing phenomenal growth.
The single-most important factor that contributed to the growth of HCL
Infosystems has been price competitiveness.

The prices offered by HCL are more competitive than vendors like Compaq
and others. There is a price differential of about 11-12 percent between HCL
and offerings from others in the desktop space. HCL also scores in terms of
competitiveness in offering the latest technologies and features.

In fact, HCL was the first vendor to offer Intel Pentium P4-based PCs in the
country. This was primarily because HCL is a domestic player. MNCs have to
deal with a lot of factors like manufacturing, testing etc at a global level that are
time consuming and delay the introduction of the latest technology
developments.

The company has a very strong brand image and a huge channel infrastructure,
which not only aids sales, but also provides support and services.

21
HCL Infosystems, with revenues (TTM) of US$ 2.6 billion (Rs. 11,897 crores),

only about  250 computers in the country as a whole, HCL ventured into
creating  Career development centers – the first of its kind in India. The purpose
was to have a constant puddle of qualified professionals for the

industry.

Today, the career development centers span India - wide with over 3000
students. The spotlight has been on industry-experience and focus on 'real
world' practical training.

The faculties are drawn from HCL and the industry. The areas of center of
attention include both hardware and software - starting from basics in hardware
and networking to server related and security.

It may be summoned up that the Rs11,648 crore turnover company entered the
rewarding IT education line in 2006 and focused on the retail segment with its
30 centers branded HCL Career Development Centers (HCL CDC).

Located in major Indian cities, the centre offers full and part time industry
related courses in software and networking.

The corporate/enterprise and the educational institutional segments are new to

HCL. The modalities of targeting them are being worked out.

Meanwhile, the company is planning to add 70 more centers across the country
taking the total number of HCL CDCs to 100. The company is more in favour
taking the franchisee course for expansion than through its own centers.

A franchisee need to invest around Rs25 lakh - Rs50 lakh to start a centre.
Nearly 80 per cent of the centers would be franchisee owned. However the
faculty is from the HCL group companies. Out of these existing 30 centers,
HCL Infosystems owns just six.

The HCL CDC courses are priced starting from Rs10,000 and goes up to
Rs56,000.

26
Interestingly HCL Infosystems is not looking at speedy expansion of its IT
education centers. They are capping the number of centers at 100. They will
increase the depth of courses.

One main reason for capping the number of centers is that the teaching faculty
at the centers is from the HCL group. It would be easier said than done to find
faculty members in house as each centre would need around 5 trainers.

The company does not give any guaranteed placement. Group Company HCL
Technologies Limited meets its necessities for new recruits from these centers.

HCL CDCs provide specifically designed courses in high-end Software,

Hardware and Networking integration to spruce up students into industry-ready
professionals.

The company already has operational HCL CDC’s in six cities, namely
Noida, Delhi, Pune, Coimbatore, Meerut and Agra, and the company plans to
set up similar centres overseas as well.

The HCL CDC’s operating in north India are:

 Noida
 Yusuf sarai
 Meerut
 Bareilly
 Chandigarh
 Allahabad

The IT boom in India has caused a brutal dearth of high-skilled ICT engineers.
With HCL CDCs, HCL anticipates to play a leadership role in enlarging the
talent pool available to organizations deploying IT in India.

27
The faculties are industry experts and veterans which have nearly over thirty
years of HCL experience in IT software, hardware, and networking and system
integration.

In the world of high-end avant-garde technologies that we live in today, the
students do not have the capabilities on leading edge technologies, which is so
very vital to build the ICT infrastructure in the country. While a lot of
prominence is given on availability of software engineering it is anticipated that
the Indian ICT market is over Rs. 84,000 crores today, 60-70% of which is
hardware and Infrastructure software.

A study by Cisco-IDC estimates that one-third of companies are not able to fill
up their demand for networking professionals. Also according to an estimate by
E-Value, there is an expected annual demand of around 2 lakh networking
professionals in the country while the supply is restricted to about 60% of the
demand. The discrepancy is further estimated to grow at a CAGR of 21% till
2010.

The technological changes add further to the demand, resulting to not only a
fissure in quantity but a huge qualitative fissure as well. Hence the awareness
and the urgent need to create a vigorous and sustainable skilled manpower
resourcing framework, has made HCL to set up the HCL CDCs.

HCL CDC courses have been planned keeping in mind the specific needs of
modern day organizations. Their mission is to transform their students into
industry-ready professionals who are ready to take on enterprise-wide IT
deployment and integration assignments from the day one, without the need for
any further training by their eventual employers.

28
HCL is offering a three-month full-time and one-year part-time course titled
HCL Certified Network Engineer (HCNE). The course involves 7 modules,
21 projects and 70 online tests as part of the academic curriculum.

HCL CDCs also provide for placement support to all their students who do
extremely well in their academics and present a significant performance during
the course.

The company also has plans for introducing short-term modular courses to
augment skills of working professionals, who aspire for faster growth in their
respective careers. Most prominently the company offers the students various
flexible payment options.

HCL is the largest IT Company in India that is paying attention completely on
providing a complete range of ICT products, solutions and services to the
customers in the domestic market.

29
EMPOWERING TO BRING OUT THE BEST

growing attention on strategy and strategic management Is or Ansoff business
strategy specify:-
1) Firms product-market position.
2) Directions in which the firms seeks to grow and change
3) Competitive tools it employment.
4) Means by which it enter new market.
5) Manner in which it configure it resources.
6) Strengths it will seek to overcome.
7) Weaknesses it will seek to overcome.
Strategy is the concept of a firm’s business which provides a unifying theme for its
activities ,and enables its manager to define an approach to their choose market.

46
DEFINING THE INDUSTRY

Defining an industry depend upon intensity of competition at that time.

Firstly, it might build up its land acquisition and sales department so as to compete in
private speculative.
Secondly, it might recruit more marketing managers to work efficiently.

DECIDING THE ADVANTAGEOUS FACTOR IN INDUSTRY

Once we understand the mechanism of the market we wish to compete, next step is
to decide how to make the best use of our potential advantages. The enterprise must
decide how to “position” itself so as to achieve sustainable competitive advantage

47
GENERIC STRATEGIES MATRIX

This matrix permits to choose a marketing stance within one of the four boxes which
are made available within the two dimensions of the competitive advantage and
competitive scope.
COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE
A lower cost strategy is based on the pursuit of cost leadership n a given industry
through exploitation of lower input costs , greater efficiency and that comes from
undertaking a succession of projects in a variety of operating environments.
The traditional emphasis on price competition through differentiation does not
necessarily mean that clients are obtaining the best possible deals as a result
comprehensive marketing strategy has been increased as a result of growing
demand for informational technology

Competitive scope

According to Porter extends the positioning concept in to the second dimension by

adding further variable which he describes as competitive scope. An example of the
choice of competitive scope in information technology is the decision whether to take
full responsibility for projects as marketer in either case there will be further choice
between pursuing competitive advantage through lower cost or differentiation

Promotional Activities of HCL-CDC

Data collection: - This is the first step of promotional activities and this is very
effective way of promotions per my experience no way is so much effective rather
than direct interaction .Because anyone can ask any query or doubts.

Seminars at HCL-CDC Centre’s:- Through the telecalling we invite the candidates

for attending the seminar. So that we can able to expose our quality education,
Products, Services, facilities .

Television Advertising: - There are various local television channels through which
we can expose our products and services. So that everyone can aware about HCL-
CDC products and services. Through this medium we can expose to their parents.

RESEARCH

74
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Methodology in common parlances reference to a research for

knowledge .One can also define as a research as a scientific and systematic search
for pertinent information on a specific topic. Research is an art of scientific
investigation, the advance learners dictionary of current English lays down the
meaning of research as “A careful investigation or enquiry specially through search
for new facts in any branch of knowledge”.

RESEARCH DESIGN

A Research Design is the specification of methods and procedures for acquiring the
information needed. It is the overall operational pattern or framework of project that
stipulates what information is to be collected from which source and by what
procedures?

The Research Design was in such a way that all the probable customers and the
potential buyers can be covered during the research so as to get the accurate
information and feedback from the respondents.

The research was divided in the following phrases:-

1) The respondents were segmented.

2) The target customers were identified and approached.

3) Questionnaires were filled by the respondents.

4) Information was analyzed and decoded.

5) Conclusion Drawn.

75
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

There has been the application of Exploratory Research. It is generally based on

secondary data that are readily available .It does not have a formal and rigid as the
Researcher may have to change his focus or direction depending on the availability
of new ideas and relationships among variables. It is in the nature of preliminary
investigation where in the researcher himself is sufficient knowledgeable and is
therefore unable to frame detailed research questions.

DATA COLLECTION SOURCES

The Data inputs taken mainly from the secondary sources, one-to-one interactions
with the HCL professionals and the meetings attended while working in HCL CDC
and direct interaction with the customers.

Primary Data

The Primary Data that I collected was the first hand information which I received
through Personal Interviews with the customers through Questionnaires. This data
gave the most vital information for making my analysis of the prevailing banking
behavior of the consumers and their views regarding various courses offered by HCL
CDC.

Data were also collected from discussion with Senior Staff Members at HCL who
helped me a lot in the completion of my project.

 The data has been collected through Random Sampling Method.

 The Questionnaire has been designed.

 Interview and Schedule method is also used in data collection process.

76
Secondary Data

Secondary data involved in my Research is the information that is collected through

various sites on Internet ,brochures & pamphlets of various institutes and from the
site of HCL CDC.

SWOT
ANALYSIS

96
SWOT Analysis of HCL CDC

While working closely with HCL CDC, I observed the following strength, weakness,
opportunities and threats faced by HCL CDC—

Strength: 1. HCL CDC is a part of HCL Enterprise which is an industry in itself,

whereas its main competitors are all education institutions imparting training in IT. It’s
comparatively easier for HCL CDC to place its students in the industry since being
an industry it knows the requirements of the same and tries to impart skill building
training programs to the students accordingly.

2. The trainers are all HCL certified and are the employees of HCL Info systems

3. HCL CDC offers state-of-the-art infrastructure to impart the IT training programs to

its students. Besides the regular IT training programs, HCL CDC also arranges
seminars by the top HCL professionals who makes the students aware of the latest
development taking place in the IT industry in India and abroad.

4. HCL CDC also offers Personality Developmant.classes to its students so that they
does not lack behind the other candidates in the competition race.

Weakness: 1. Lack of co-ordination between the marketing team and the

administration team.

2. Mismanagement in the launches of various batches relating to various programs.

3. Delay in the issuance of books, lab cards, ID cards, etc.

4. Delay in the flow of information to the students relating to allocation of batches,

timings of classes, etc.

Opportunities: 1. Growing market of IT in India will pave the way for rapid
expansion of HCL CDCs to cater to the growing demand from individuals for latest IT
training programs.

97
2. Growing demand from various Corporates to train their employees on the latest IT
training programs will pave the way for growth of corporate training in the HCL
CDCs.

Threats: 1. Steep competition from Aptech and NIIT will always keep HCL CDCs on
the heels to innovate its offerings on a continuous basis.

2. Apart from the big names in the IT training market, there is also the mushrooming
growth of small and medium institutions which offer various IT training programs at a
much cheaper rate. These institutions are quite popular at the local level and may
woo the students of small towns and villages by their attractive below-the-line
advertisements.

FINDINGS

 HCL, the leading IT industry with experience of 32 years, entered in training

sector.

 HCL CDC is the major player in corporate& retail training.

 Across India, HCL CDC has 67 centre’s, thus marking its pan India presence

 HCL CDC, NOIDA ranks top in providing placements all over India.

Though the IT training market in India is dominated by powerful players such as

NIIT, Aptech, Jetking and so on and HCL CDC appears to be a two year old baby
struggling to keep its head above, still there are many reasons which show that HCL
CDC is not in a disadvantageous position when compared to the influential industry
players. They are listed below-

1. HCL CDC is founded by a company which has 33 years of experience in the

global technology and IT space. HCL is an industry itself and HCL CDC is
backed by an industry which knows the industry requirements of manpower
and train the students accordingly.

2. HCL is the only company to train the youths in wi-fi technology. It has an
industry regulated curriculum, has field visits and plant visits as part of the
curriculum and is the only company to have two manufacturing plants in
Rudrapur and Pondicherry.

3. HCL CDCs have HCL certified trainers, books directly sourced from vendors
like Microsoft, Cisco, Red Hat, etc., State-of -the-art infrastructure, gives
100% placement assistance, conduct on-line exams, have its own Prometric
center where international exams are conducted, train the students on soft
skills, gives hands-on training experience on the industry and so on and so
forth.

101
These are some of the strong reasons which predict that HCL CDCs will emerge as
one of the major players in the IT education and training market. Today, HCL CDCs
has more than 50,000 individual students under its fold leaving aside the corporate
professionals it is training. Its revenue has increased steadily to 90 lakhs in the
financial year 2007-08.Its target is to cross 2 crore mark in the next financial year.

Reflections on what has been learned during the Summer Training

My summer training in HCL CDC has been a great learning experience. I underwent
training in different areas such as operations, sales, marketing and administration. I
was mainly the member of the marketing team and as a part of the marketing team I
was given a target of making business worth Rs.100000 for the month June 2009,
bringing in at least 1 “walk-in” per day, making 5 registrations for the month and
conducting at least 1 workshop for the month. I successfully achieved my target
during my internship in HCL CDC.

102
A brief of the activities I have performed in HCL CDC are—

1. Calling students from the database given by the field marketing executives to the
center, explaining to them the training programs offered by HCL CDC and fixing their
appointments with the IT Counselors (who constitute the sales team).
2. In case the IT Counselors are busy and there is a long queue of students waiting
for counseling, I did the job of the Counselor. I was given the product knowledge
before and had to apply the tactics of converting the “walk-ins” to “admissions”.
3. Calling students to attain the work-shops organized by HCL CDC in collaboration
with professionals from Microsoft, Oracle and Red Hat who are its education
partners.

4. Making follow-ups to know whether students coming to the center either to

attain workshops or for counseling will actually join the IT training programs or
not.

5. Allocating Batches to students who has joined the program in accordance to their
preference timing.

6. Launching of new batches for the month of June and July, 2009 in consultation
with the Chief Technical Trainer and the Center Manager.

7. While in operations, I was actively involved in maintaining database of students

who paid their monthly installments, received books, lab cards, ID cards, etc

104
RECOMMENDATIONS

Some of the recommendations to HCL CDC are—

1. Launch of new and customized industry-relevant course targeting different

customer groups with different backgrounds so that HCL CDC don’t lack
behind the market leaders—Aptech and NIIT.

2. Rapid expansion of the training centers to handle the increasing number of

students.

3. CDCs should venture into other emerging areas such as retail and hospitality
industry where training of manpower is required apart from restricting itself to
individual and corporate training in the IT arena.

4. Efficient management of the CDCs so that the end- users are satisfied and
more and more customers walk into them.

5. Launch of a series of ad campaign in multiple media to make the masses

aware of the brand and the products and programs offered by it.

6. Compulsory soft skill and personality development classes for the HCL CDC
students so that they don’t lack behind in the communication front.

 Communication Classes.

 Personality Development Classes.

 Mock Interview Sessions.

 Generate awareness on Latest Technology.

105
 Dressing Etiquettes.

 Presentation Skills.

7. More marketing steps should be taken to generate awareness regarding the

HCL penetration in training sector.

The art and craft of career development should be clearly understood. The art
(strategy) should be clearly drawn on the canvas and the craft (implementation)
precisely delivered. Developing a PROPAGATE (Product, Risk, Opportunities,
People, Appetite, Geography (Place), Attributes, Training & Education). Following
are important ingredients of the matrix:

Developing and implementing a robust PROPAGATE matrix will definitely give a new
direction to HCL Education.

STUDY

108
LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

In this report I have tried to give the latest and accurate information about the study
conducted. But there are few limitations, which are as follows:

 The time period allotted for this study was of two months, which is short
period of time.
 Area of study was limited to Noida, but HCL has a big market at national and
international level.
 This project has being performed in summer season. Hence, the results may
or may not be the same for the other seasons.

CONCLUSION

110
CONCLUSION

Powerful Brand Image

HCL has a strong brand image in India and abroad. It has invested in building a
brand recall in the minds of its customers through advertising a product. HCL brand
image coupled with its strong customer relationship and cutting-edge solutions have
helped the company in creating value for its clients. It has collaborated with many
companies whose products and solutions are in line with its business segments,
such as Nokia in telecom, AMD in hi-tech solutions to provide better customer
services. Brand image was leveraged by HCL.

Experienced Team
One key differentiator that helps HCL to stand apart from its peers has been its
superior human resource quality. The team carried with it a rich and diversified
experience. This ensured a thorough understanding of client requirements. The
company also lays special emphasis on developing the skills of its employees. It
provides regular training to its employees for developing their skills. The experience
and sound domain knowledge equips employees with an in-depth understanding of
problems and helps in providing quality inputs that lead to better quality solutions for
its customers.

Blended Solutions
HCL has been able to offer its different services under one umbrella. There is a
synergy between the different operations of the company. It is among the few
companies that provide support services to its clients through its office located in
Ireland .The company leverages its support operations in Ireland and in India to
provide valuable support solutions to its clients. It provides support solutions for its
European clients through its Ireland centre due to local skill presence. The centre
transfers its low-end functions to its sister operations in India, thus freeing its
resources to concentrate on high-end functions.

111
Focus on Key Business Areas
The company has focused on five major vertical markets - Banking and Financial
Services, Life quality Sciences, Retail, Telecom, and Hi-technology. These verticals
form the core operational strength of the company. It has concentrated in these
verticals, which have in return facilitated the company to be a strong niche player in
these verticals. The company provides solutions to its

various clients in banking and financial services, which include the insurance sector
(AA Insurance Service), the retail sector (DSG International Plc) and the telecom
sector (British Telecom).

Global Strategy
The company has established subsidiaries across the globe to sustain growth. It has
set up subsidiaries in the USA, Japan, the UK and Australia etc. which aided in
penetrating the global market. The company believes in the philosophy of ‘think
global and act local’. Its global delivery system is based on the strength of its local
employees, who understand the geography of its subsidiary and provide services in
collaboration with its technological competence.

The information technology training sector in India is witnessing a boom, driven by a

talent crunch, paucity of employable' graduates and all-round need for trained
manpower at all levels. This growth is largely led by corporate training, especially at
induction levels, followed by re-skilling training. Huge wage hikes, at an average of
15 per cent, especially at the middle level, have led IT companies to resort to
fresher’s.

The Indian IT training market is on the upswing, recording a 46% YoY growth to log
revenues of Rs. 2,135 Crore in 2006-07, reports leading IT magazine Dataquest.
Worldwide, the market is growing at around 7 percent and the Indian market is
growing at a rate of 16 percent. As per the annual survey conducted by Dataquest,
the IT training industry is on a growth path with corporate training and exports being
the key drivers.

112
The growth in hiring by IT companies, increasing requirement for newer skill-sets
and the rapid change in technology, continued to spur the Individual Training
segment. Herein, lays the challenge for HCL CDC. HCL CDC who is just two years
old in the IT education and training market is facing tough challenges from
established players such as NIIT and Aptech. But through new and innovative
product offerings, it can still manage to stay ahead of competition. New IT products
and programmes which is specially deigned for the large number of simple
Graduates which are churn out by Indian colleges and universities, thus making
them employable will go a
Long way in making Career Development Centers of HCL popular among the college
and university crowd.

Apart from these for the vast number of technically trained manpower which are
churn out by the Engineering and other technical institutes, industry-relevant and up-
graded programs on skill training can be introduced so that they can be readily
employed by the IT industry without further spending on additional training. These
will make the HCL CDCs popular among the BTech, BE, MCA, M.Sc., etc, and also
among the IT Companies of the country making it the favorite hunting ground for
recruitment.
In a country of more than one billion people, saying that we can't grow fast enough
because we do not have enough people is difficult to believe, but it is true. While the
higher education sector (only the formal sector giving degrees such as B.Tech., BE,
MCA, M.Sc., etc., and not the training industry like NIIT) produces almost 3 lakhs
graduates every year, only 1 lakh out of them is really employable by IT industry.
Even with this 1 lakh, the industry has to spend on additional training. And beyond
this 1 lakh, industry does hire because it has no option, but the training costs are
huge. As a result of this huge mismatch between demand and supply of good quality
engineers, the salary costs are going through the roof, and the country's advantage
of lower cost is steadily eroding. In such a scenario, emerging training institutes such
as HCL CDC can fill the gap of demand and supply of technically trained manpower
and India can retain its competitive advantage as a low cost destination, thus
bringing more jobs, more opportunities to our youths and taking India to a new
height.
