TECHNICAL HANDBOOKONPRESSURIZED IRRIGATION TECHNIQUES
A. Phocaides, FAO Consultant
FOOD AND AGRICULTURE ORGANIZATIONOF THE UNITED NATIONS
ROME, 2000

Preface
Eradication of hunger and food security for all is FAO’s main objective.Water and food security are intimately connected and irrigated agriculturehas been an extremely important source of food production over recentdecades. Food requirements will increase in future, while global waterresources are limited. Therefore, to make the best use of water foragriculture and to improve irrigation efficiency is a prerequisit for thefuture. Shifting from surface irrigation to pressurized irrigation willcontribute substantially to the above goal. The objective of this handbook is to provide a very practical guide toirrigation and agriculture technicians and extension workers in the field. The binder format of the handbook will permit future update of individualchapters, which may become necessary with the rapid changingpressurized irrigation technology.Within the Land and Water Development Division of FAO, thefollowing people have contributed to the CD-ROM: Andreas Phocaides,Irrigation Consultant, Davide Casanova, FAO Junior Irrigation Expert,Simone Morini, New Media Expert, and Reto Florin, Chief, WaterResources, Development and Management Service.
