ARE YOU A MENTAL SLAVE? IS YOUR MIND THE SERVANT OFOUTSIDE FORCES? WOULDN'T YOU RATHER BE A MENTALMASTER, WHERE YOUR THOUGHTS TAKE CHARGE NOT ONLY OF YOUR MIND AND BODY, BUT ALSO YOUR DESTINY? HEREIS PRACTICAL, STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTION ON MASTERINGCONTROL OF NOT ONLY THE CONSCIOUS MIND BUT, MOREIMPORTANTLY, "THOSE MARVELOUS FACULTIES WHICHOPERATE ON THE SUBCONSCIOUS PLANES."THIS IS A HOW-TO BOOK FOR ANY PERSON OF ANY ERA THAT IS READY TOFINALLY TAKE CHARGE OF HIS OR HER LIFE. THERON QDUMONT WAS ONE OF THE ALIASES OF THE AMERICANWRITER WILLIAM WALKER ATKINSON (1862-1932) WHOWAS EDITOR OF THE POPULAR MAGAZINE NEW THOUGHTFROM 1901 TO 1905, AND EDITOR OF THE JOURNALADVANCED THOUGHT FROM 1916 TO 1919. HE AUTHOREDDOZENS OF MIND POWER BOOKS UNDER NUMEROUSPSEUDONYMS, INCLUDING YOGI RAMACHARAKA, THERON Q.DUMONT, AND SOME THAT ARE LIKELY STILL UNKNOWNTODAY.

THE MASTERY OF WILLIN THIS BOOK THERE WILL BE NOTHING SAID CONCERNINGMETAPHYSICAL THEORIES ORPHILOSOPHICAL HYPOTHESES; INSTEAD, THERE WILL BE AVERY STRICT ADHERENCE TO THEPRINCIPLES OF PSYCHOLOGY. THERE WILL BE NOTHING SAIDOF ''SPIRIT'' OR "SOUL''; BUTVERY MUCH SAID OF "MIND." THERE WILL BE NO SPECULATIONCONCERNING THE QUESTIONOF "WHAT IS THE SOUL," OR CONCERNING "WHAT BECOMES OFTHE SOUL AFTER THE DEATHOF THE BODY." THESE SUBJECTS, WHILE HIGHLY IMPORTANTAND INTERESTING, BELONG TOA DIFFERENT CLASS OF INVESTIGATION, AND ARE OUTSIDE OFTHE LIMITS OF THE PRESENTINQUIRY. WE SHALL NOT EVEN ENTER INTO A DISCUSSION OFTHE SUBJECT OF "WHAT IS THEMIND"; INSTEAD, WE SHALL CONFINE OUR THOUGHT TO THESUBJECT OF "HOW DOES THEMIND WORK." FOR THE PURPOSES OF THE PRESENTCONSIDERATION OF THE SUBJECT BEFORE US, WE SHALL REST

CONTENT WITH THE FUNDAMENTAL POSTULATE THAT "EVERY MAN ORWOMAN HAS A MIND," AND THE COROLLARY THAT WHEN ANINTELLIGENT MAN ORWOMAN SPEAKS OF "MYSELF," HE OR SHE IS CONSCIOUS THATHIS OR HER "MIND" HAS A MORE INTIMATE RELATION TO THAT"SELF" THAN HAS HIS OR HER "BODY.'' THE ''BODY"IS USUALLY RECOGNIZED AS "BELONGING TO" THE "SELF,"WHILE THE "MIND" IS USUALLY SO CLOSELY IDENTIFIED WITH THE "SELF" THAT IT IS DIFFICULTTO DISTINGUISH THEM INTHOUGHT OR EXPRESSION. MANY PHILOSOPHERS ANDMETAPHYSICIANS HAVE SOUGHT TO TELL US "JUST WHAT" THEMIND IS; BUT THEY USUALLY LEAVE US AS MUCH IN DOUBT ASBEFORE THE SO-CALLED EXPLANATION. AS THE OLD PERSIANPOET HAS SAID, WE USUALLY "COME OUT THE DOOR IN WHICHWE WENT," IN ALL SUCH DISCUSSIONS AND SPECULATIONSCONCERNING THE NATURE OF MIND, OR "JUST WHAT MINDREALLY IS." WE CAN, AND DO, KNOW MUCH ABOUT HOW THEMIND WORKS, BUT WE KNOW LITTLE OR NOTHING ABOUTWHAT THE MIND REALLY IS. BUT, FOR THAT MATTER, SO FARAS PRACTICAL PURPOSES ARE CONCERNED, IT MAKES VERY LITTLE DIFFERENCE TO US JUST WHAT THE MIND IS, PROVIDINGWE KNOW JUST HOW IT WORKS, AND HOW IT MAY BECONTROLLED AND MANAGED. WHAT THE MIND IS A WELL-KNOWN PSYCHOLOGIST HAS WELL SAID: "IT USED TO BE THEFASHION TO BEGIN PSYCHOLOGIES WITH A DISCUSSIONCONCERNING THE MATERIAL OR IMMATERIAL NATURE OF THEMIND. IT HAS BEEN WELL SAID THAT PSYCHOLOGY IS NOMORE BOUND TO BEGIN BY TELLING WHAT THE MIND IS, THANPHYSICS IS OBLIGEDTO START BY SETTLING THE VEXED QUESTION AS TO WHATMATTER IS.PSYCHOLOGY STUDIES THE PHENOMENA OF MIND, JUST AS PHYSICS INVESTIGATES THOSE OF MATTER.FORTUNATELY, PHENOMENA DO NOT CHANGE WITH OURVARYING VIEWS AS TO WHAT THINGS REALLY ARE. THEPHENOMENA OF ELECTRICITY REMAIN THE SAME WHETHER WECONSIDER IT A FLUID, A REPULSION OF MOLECULES, ORVIBRATIONS OF THE ETHER. IF A MAN HOLD THE STRANGETHEORY THAT ELECTRICITY WAS A FLOCK OF INVISIBLEMOLECULAR GOATS THAT PRANCED ALONG A WIRE WITHINCONCEIVABLE RAPIDITY, HE WOULD STILL HAVE TOINSULATE THE WIRES IN THE SAME WAY, GENERATE THECURRENT IN THE SAME WAY. A STRONG DISCHARGE WOULDKILL HIM AS QUICKLY AS IF HE HELD A DIFFERENT THEORY. INSHORT, HIS VIEWS OF THE ULTIMATE SUBSTANCE OF
