e live within one of the most important historical locationsin our country: for two long winters, Morris County wasthe heart and soul of the American Revolution. Our townsand villages are studded with historic architectural and archaeologi-cal treasures that contribute to our unique quality of life.It was a recognition of these historical riches, and an acute aware-ness of the many threats to their preservation, that inspired the Boardof Chosen Freeholders to create the Morris County Heritage Commis-sion forty years ago. The Heritage Commission’s mission is to preserve
and interpret Morris County’s past for the benet of its residents. We
believe that promoting awareness and public education are the bestpaths to saving our cultural treasures for future generations. The Commission has developed a wide range of resources tosupport this mission. First and foremost, the Commission collects, preserves, and maintains the historic archives that document our past– from slave records to saloon licenses. It also publishes a newsletterand historic tour guides, places markers at historic sites, presents ed-ucational programs, and offers grant opportunities for local historicorganizations.Although budgets are tight at present, the Commission will doits share of belt-tightening, and its work will go on. We will continueto serve the people of Morris County through the dedication of ourvolunteer commissioners and the superlative work of County Archi-vist Peg Shultz.Larry Fast, Chairmantheir historical documents. The program will be presented by
certied archivist Joseph M. Ciccone,
who has extensive experience manag-ing both library and archival opera-tions. He has conducted workshopsfor the Mid-Atlantic Region ArchiveConference (MARAC) on both copy-right law and oral history and servedon the board of the New York Archi-vists Roundtable (NYART).Topics covered will include col-lection preservation, environment, storage, reformatting/digitization,collection access, arrangement and de-scription, and funding opportunities
for nonprot archival collections.

The project began in 2003 and was ac-celerated in 2009 with a grant from the New Jersey Historical Commission. The Sanborn Map Company is the oldest mapping company in the UnitedStates.
