This Year’s Story
This year’s RCI® feature story salutes
the Shayler Park, Batavia Ohio.
When the community comes together, amazing things can happen. A group of homeowners in the Shayler Park subdivision of Batavia,
OH, wanted to turn their worn-out playground into a family destination. Working with Ken Schmithorst of Walnut Grove Playgrounds, the
homeowner’s association was able to customize a playground to fit their needs and most important, their budget. They started with the
Shipshewana model, and added elements that appealed to visitors of all ages.
The community came together to tear down the old park and make way for the new. Several homeowners also pitched in to help erect
the new playground. Best of all, the playground has become an attractive feature for people looking to move into the neighborhood.
“Having a new system that lasts and is low maintenance has become a huge asset and selling point for the homes still being built in
our area,” said Ginger Kash, who spearheaded the drive for a new playground. “We have something to accommodate kids of all ages,
from two to twelve. The entire community is so happy with how the playground turned out.”
With the installed canopy, there are enough shady areas for parents and kids alike, making the park perfect no matter the weather.
The community holds Easter Egg hunts at the park in the spring, a Boo Fest in the fall, and a big party every Fourth of July. “As soon
as we laid down the last shred of playground mulch, everyone in our community was there,” Kash said. “Now, every nice day, there is
someone at the playground.”

Construction is fundamental to the playground industry and an important part of construction is safety. RCI® is devoted to keeping playgrounds safe
for all children. There is no need to worry when it comes to our equipment. For over 25 years, we have perfected quality and durable playgrounds that
meet all safety requirements. In fact, we go above and beyond to ensure a protective environment for our children. We prove that fun and safety go hand
in hand. We strictly adhere to the Handbook on Playground Safety provided by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the American Safety
for Testing Materials (ASTM) F1487 Standard Consumer Safety Performance Specification for Playground Equipment for Public Use. At RCI®, we recom-
mend that you strictly follow the installation directions as outlined in our dimensional diagrams. These diagrams are designed with your safety in mind.
Dimensions are critical to a successful playground environment. Planning for the right
amount of ground space (the amount of space required for an assembled unit) and use
zones (the total space under or around a piece of installed equipment that is required for
a user to complete the activity, such as swinging out or exiting a slide) make for a more
safe and fun play experience. Each of our products include complete ground space and use
zone dimensions. When planning the space requirements for your playground, give careful
consideration to the ground space dimensions and the use zone area. It is vital, for safety,
that the entire zone be covered with a soft resilient surface. See U.S. Consumer Product
Safety Commission Guidelines.
The Right Play Surface makes all the difference. RCI® recommends that you never
install playground equipment over a hard surface such as asphalt or concrete. Falls can
result in serious injury.
For the sake of safety, select a surface which meets the U.S. Consumer Product
Safety Commission guidelines for surfaces under play equipment as
