• Whether they are survivors, patients or family members, advocates provide a broad
perspective of disease related issues important to their constituency. Advocates
understand what cancer research means to patients and their survival and their
quality of life.
• Advocates will sit side-by-side with the scientists so their perspectives will be
integrated into the direction of the research we fund.

Integrating the Advocate Perspective into the
SU2C Research Funding Process
Advocate Advisory Council
• Hold a senior leadership position in a national organization
• Have a demonstrated impact on cancer research through policy advocacy, research
advocacy and/or community outreach
• Represent a constituency of patients, survivors, or others in the cancer community
• Have experience serving on grant panels/study sections that award funds for cancer
research (e.g., National Cancer Institute, DoD Congressionally Directed Medical
Research Programs, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, California Breast Research
Program) or as a patient advocate on a cooperative group, SPORE or other advisory
group
• In addition, high priority will be given to those individuals who have successfully
completed special training for advocates (e.g., the AACR’s Scientist<->Survivor
Program, Consumer Advocates in Research and Related Activities CARRA training of
the National Cancer Institute, Project LEAD ,or an equivalent program).
