Stand Up To Cancer will bring together the best and brightest members of the cancerresearch and advocacy communities to work in a way that will transcend the barriersthat have traditionally inhibited creativity and collaboration.
•
Whether they are survivors, patients or family members, advocates provide a broadperspective of disease related issues important to their constituency. Advocatesunderstand what cancer research means to patients and their survival and theirquality of life.

Advocates will sit side-by-side with the scientists so their perspectives will beintegrated into the direction of the research we fund.

SU2C Advocate Advisory Council
o
Leaders of about 25 key advocacy organizations will be invited to join
o
Chairperson elected by majority vote of the Council
o
Speak about the importance of cancer research
o
Serve as a resource for the Stand Up To Cancer project by suggesting ways toenhance this national initiative
o
Formulate an advocacy action plan for public awareness
o
Annually elect two members to serve on the Blue Ribbon Scientific AdvisoryCommittee
o
Annually elect two members to serve on Innovative Grants Subcommittee
o
Recommend advocates to serve on Dream Teams
o
Have the opportunity to attend the SU2C television program on September 5th
o

“Blue Ribbon” Scientific Advisory Committee
o
About fifteen highly accomplished, senior laboratory researchers andphysician-scientists
o
Two advocates, elected to serve one-year terms by the SU2C AdvocateAdvisory Council
o
Determine the most promising scientific areas (particular organ sites and otherspecialized research areas) for potential funding of Dream Teams
o
Select Dream Team Leaders and approve Dream Team membership
o
Review and approve Dream Team research proposals, milestones, and budgets
o
Review Dream Teams’ progress and make recommendations regardingadjustments in the funding (e.g., continuation, reduction) of individual Dream Teams
o
Review the recommendations of the Innovative Grants Subcommittee(s) andselect a balanced portfolio of innovative funds
Criteria for selection:
In order to effectively and productively take part in the Stand up to Cancer ResearchFunding Process, it is vital that the advocates are not only leaders in a nationalorganization, but also have an understanding of key concepts of cancer research.
