This year-long study entitled data collation and collection from secondary and primary sources. Datafrom several Government Ministries, Institutions and Departments had to be obtained. The assistanceof the Health Economics Unit (HEU), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW) and thecooperation, assistance and guidance of various individuals have been invaluable in completing thisstudy. However, it is essential to make special mention of Mr. Mustak Hassan Md. Iftekhar, former Joint Chief, HEU, Dr. Shamim Ara Begum, Dr. Ahmed Mustafa, Mr. Abdul Hamid Moral and Dr.Shahjahan Ali Khandekar of HEU. HEU assistance in soliciting participation of NGOs and privatesector health providers is much appreciated.Mr. Geoff Hoare, Senior Economist, HEU provided much guidance and encouragement in thischallenging effort. Ms. Diane Northway and her colleagues at the Financial Management and AuditUnit (FWAU) were most helpful in providing detailed MOHFW budget and expenditurecomputerized database. Funds for this study was provided by the Department for InternationalDevelopment’s (DFID), UK, Strategic Investment in Health Economics (SIHE) component under theHealth and Population Sector Programme (HPSP).Dr. A.K.M. Ghulam Rabbani, ex-Secretary, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, wasthe key researcher and guide to the Data International research team. His intellectual input,demonstrable high standards for quality control, and personable guidance encouraged the teammembers immensely to produce a good product. Dr. Ravi Rannan Eliya, short-term internationalconsultant on this project, provided effective input through the internet as well as during his visit toBangladesh.K.M. Shamsuzzaman, Khairul Abrar, Mirza Sazzadul Hoque and many other members of the DataInternational team sincerely worked long hours in the field in data collection. Muhammad ZahirulHoque and Mohammed Nazmul Huq, diligently studied the data, and were the lead persons in data processing and analysis process. My colleague, Azizur Rahman, Director, Data International, and Ifound our coordination and management role to be a pleasant and rewarding experience due to thewonderful contributions of those mentioned above and many others not singled out.
