Dear Member
I am asking for your vote in the election for UnisonGeneral Secretary. After the election we all knowthat what is coming is the biggest attack on publicspending for a generation. The media, big businessand the employers are all demanding it.We need to be ready to defend our hard-won gainsand the services that our communities depend on. As General Secretary I will work to unite all thepublic sector unions to defend our jobs, pay andpensions, and to fight alongside our communities tosave services.I don’t want an income of over £120,000 as GeneralSecretary. I should receive the average worker’swage. Those who represent the workers should notdo so for financial gain. The MP’s expenses scandalhas taken cynicism about the motives of ourrepresentatives to new heights. We need to restorepeople’s faith.I won’t put the interests of Labour or any other partybefore the interests of our members. I will stand upfor our members whoever is in government and I willlet the members decide on whether we continue tofund Labour.I’m an ordinary, working Unison member faced withthe same problems as you. I can’t change things onmy that’s impossible. The job of a leader is to give leadership. TheGeneral Secretary, the fulltime officials, the stewardsand ordinary members need to act as one for thebenefit of all Unison members.
Paul Holmes
Paul has been nominated by 52 branches across Unison
Paul led the way on equal pay in our branch. Weshouldn’t fight alone , we need to fight together asa union. Paul is the person to pull us up, not drag us down. Then we’ll win together.Mick Ryan Service Conditions Officer, KirkleesUnison (pc)We were on strike in Manchester against cuts inmental health care and I was subsequently vic-timised. Paul personally joined us on the picketlines and his branch supported us. We need strong leadership to defend what we’ve got. Paul can pro-vide that leadership.Karen Reissmann Unison member and victimisedhealth workerI am supporting Paul because I believe his passion toinvolve all workers in running their union would pro-vide the leadership we need. Unison has a proudrecord of fighting against discrimination, including campaigning against homophobia. I am confidentthat Paul will ensure that the union builds andstrengthens itself through continuing this fight.Terry Conway Community Service Group Exec andCo-Chair London LGBT committee (pc)Working as Social Worker in a busy community team,I’m acutely aware of the challenges our members facedaily; increased workloads, unfilled vacancies andtougher targets set by government/employers. I’msupporting Paul because he is the members’ candi-date with a proud record of supporting all Unisonmembers in struggle.Sonya Howard Local Government Pay Negotiating Body (pc)
