Performance appraisals are a very importantmanagement ritual conducted by mostorganizations in order to optimize thecontributions of their employees.

This will include the processes of correctingincompetence as well as rewarding competentperformance.
o
Appraisals have very real implications , bothfor the individual as well as the organization.
o
For the individual , a positive appraisal canlead to demotions and even retrenchment.

The key issue in any performanceappraisal system is that it entails a judgementto be made in regard to an individual’sperformance over a certain period of time.

How do you make a judgement on anindividual’s performance; do you concentrateon his strong points or concentrate on theweaker factors ? Or do you to achieve a“balance” ?

The decision to solve the problem willdepend upon the right diagnosis and accurateassessment.

There can be many
reasons for poor 
 
performance
. Some have been discussedbelow:----a) One of the key factors that will ensure thesuccess or failure of any performanceappraisal , is unbiased appraisal by thoseresponsible.b) Unbiased appraisal is critical , as it will givea “True” And “Fair” picture of an individual’sperformance.
