Greetings From The Nuway Farmers
At times curious folks ask us what is meant by the
name"Nuway Farm.As most know our farming methods actually go
back 100 years or so complete with horse power and 014
fashion elbow grease.Yeah,1 know it should be spelled New
Way(I never was a good speeler).All jokes aside-since we
duplicate old farming practices why Call it Nuway?Well, first
of all it really is new to our generation and several before
us.However, the main thing it might indicate is that we are
very interested and open to any R&D that proves
sustainable. We acknowledge in nature there are still many
hidden secrets. It has been said one learns something new
every day.I believe that.Nature still has many surprises for
us.
Wendell Berry claims eating is an agriculturall act.An@ in
the new book Omnivores Dilemma Michael Pollen explains how
eating locally and organi¢aliy can be a political act. Here's
a paragraph I borrowed from Mr.Pollgn which vas actually
quoted by Joel Salatin = farmer from Virginia."Ne and the
folks who buy my food are like the Indians-ve just want to
opt out. That's all the indians ever wanted-to keep their
tepees,to give their kids herbs instead of patent medicines
and leeches. They didn't care if there was a Washington Dc or
a Custer or a USDA, just leave us alone. But the western mind
can't bear an opt-out option. We're going to refight the
Battle of little Bighorn to preserve the right to opt out,or
your grandchildren and mine will have no choice but to eat
amalgamated, irradiated genetically
prostituted, barcoded, adulterated fecal spam from the
centralized processing conglomerate".Whew...end of quote.
We at Nuway Farm have enlisted in the fight against this
"irradiated, adulterated food"by growing and providing good
local farm products to good local folks who wish to also
join the fight by buying as much as possible from 1ocai
farmers.
This winter we are kept busy repairing and improving
the farm buildings, reading and studying about Nutrient pense
crops.Since WIL most of our country's agricultural lands
has been receiving heavy doses of chemicais that has killed
all biology in the soil. That friendly bacteria-the life of
soil is what is needed to break down organic matter to feed
plants. The owner of this farm before us planted therKing
Corn"year after year.So when we bought this farm six years
ago the soil was lifeless-no earthworms either. In our third
year we began seeing some worm activity. Now the most recent
joke on the farm is"the nightcrawlers are so healthy and
agressive they might show their teeth and growl.
We'at Nuway Farm aré excited about the upcoming growing
season 2010 marks 10 years of growing for CSA.Am wanting to
make 2 special deal out of this if we can.Like last year we
are giving discounts for early signups and payups. Some years
the funds come in too late to help with seed costs and other
expenfes that farmers face in early spring. So if you can
take advantage of the discount by doing so you are helping
vs and yourselves. Chie? Parmer, p4vro YODER
