PCDEB @ 9:

A PROMISE TRANSFORMED TO REALITY

Transcription of the extemporaneous speech of Dr. Felix E. Asprer, PCDEB
Outgoing President, May 22, 2010, La Consolacion College, Mendiola, Manila.

Director Inlayo, Dear PCDEB Colleagues, Guests and Friends, Good Evening.

Now I know why Dean Abeleda requested me to present this evening a “State of
the PCDEB Address” instead of a President’s Report as reflected in the program.
The two speakers before me, Dr. Pastrana and Dr. EG Ong, provided what is
supposed to be the unwritten part of PCDEB history. It is, therefore, my job to
provide the “What is PCDEB today on its 9th year of existence.”

Well, I have to discard my prepared speech and try my best to perform my

mandate from what I can recall from memory.

Since its official birth at Manila Midtown Hotel in 2001, PCDEB have sustained
its growth towards its vision of “global business education” for our younger
generations. It continued to operate within Lincoln’s dictum that “Commitment is
what transforms a promise into reality.”

PCDEB was born on the promise of our founding elders of an alternative

organization consisting of individuals directly concern in the delivery of business
education to our youth . . . the Deans and Educators in business. PCDEB, in order
to translate that promise to reality, initiated proactive programs and strategic plans
zeroing in on the two major components of education: teaching and research.

Today, in the area of teaching:

1. PCDEB is in the forefront for Annual Search for Outstanding Business

Educators in the Philippines and the celebration of the National Business
Week (Presidential Proclamation 1189).
2. As Charter member of the Philippine Movement for Good Governance,
PCDEB is working with PDEA in the latter’s drug awareness program.
3. PCDEB entered into a Memorandum of Understanding for the expanded
collaboration with 13 institutions and professional organization. This group
is now known as the Business Education-Industry Linkage (BEI
Linkage). Membership of the BEI has now grown to 15.
a. The BEI supported the Commission on Higher Education in the
development of new policies and standards in business and
management education; and other customized programs. CMO 39,
Series of 2006 is a result of this collaborative effort.
b. Annually, BEI, with PCDEB as lead organization, holds a
Government-Business Education-Industry Summit for evaluation of
its programs and planning of new educational interventions. Last
March, 2010, the 3rd Summit was held at the Lyceum of the
Philippines University-Manila.
c. The Linkage, to date, has already formulated the Curricular Content
and Syllabi for the professional courses listed in CMO 39, S. 2006.
It is in these areas that industry and academe made a great leap in
bridging the gap between the classroom and the world of work, theory
and practice, business enterprises and the school.
4. Faculty Development Training Programs, particularly geared on CMO
39, S. 2006, were conducted for the intensive retooling of faculty in key
cities mainly: Baguio, Tagaytay, Cebu, Davao and Manila. Industry experts
from our BEI partners served as speakers and resource persons.
5. Region IV-A – Faculty development using international speakers is now on
its 3rd year.
6. Accreditation of professional business educators through the Philippine
Academy of Professionals in Business Education (PAPBE) is yearly project
since 2004. Installation of Academy members to the different accreditation
level is done by a CHED Commissioner for the past 2 years already.

In the area of Research:

1. Publication of the PCDEB Journal now on its 5th year.

2. ECOD-NCR conducted seminars/workshops on international peer
evaluation of research outputs, conduct of research, and mentoring
using international standards.
3. Region 1, 2, 3 and CAR CODEBs collaborated in organizing Research
Forums of international standards. Two of such forum were already
completed, one in Bayombong, Nueva Viscera, and year in Baguio City.
4. Agreement with SPSS-Philippines for PCDEB members training in the
latest research techniques – Data Mining and Predictive Analytics.
Preparations for a training/workshop are now ongoing in three CODEB
areas, Baguio, Cebu, and Iloilo.
5. Linkage with Datamonitor, a world leading provider of premium global
information is now operational. St. Louis University-Baguio and St. Mary’s
University-Bayombong will be trying the use of the linkage this coming
school year.

In the area of house keeping

1. Membership now stands at a 327 members from the original 79.

2. Information dissemination is now supported by a PCDEB website that has a
Forum module and Face book Account.
3. We will be turning over to the next administration, approximately, a 400K
financial position.

I close by saying; Dean Abeleda will write PCDEB’s future contribution to the
business education in our country. Dear members . . . the best is still to come.

Diyos ti agina kadakayo amin and enjoy the evening.
