Day Ten Cue Sheet

Burgo de Osma to Retortillo de Soria (70 km)

A word of caution before you start: If you do this route outside of the summer months, be sure to get a confirmedaccommodation reservation in either Tiermes or Retortillo de Soria, or be prepared to continue on to Atienza,where there are several hotels (not a big deal, since it’s almost all downhill on the way there.) The road betweenMontejo de Tiermes and Retortillo is currently being resurfaced and work should be done by the summer of 2008,but if you’re on a road bike and you don’t want to take the chance that it isn’t, take the first right after Burgo deOsma, following the SO160 through Gormaz and Recuerda; this option shortens the day to 40 km.



KmYou need to….



0.0Turn LEFT out of the Plaza Mayor and follow c/ Mayor to the end.



0.870 At the end of c/ Mayor, turn RIGHT and cross the bridge that goes over the creek. (If you need tostock up on food, there’s a Carrefour supermarket on the other side of the road.)



0.875Turn LEFT onto Carretera de la Rasa (regional road SO160)and keep going straight with thecreek on your left. When the SO160 turns off towards Gormaz, keep going straight (SO-P-4123).



4.7Pass by the La Guera Industrial Estate.



7.0LA RASA –Continue on the SO-P-4123 over the train tracks and follow the road LEFT past theabandoned railway settlement.



11Cross the Duero River.



11.4Abandoned town of NAVAPALOS (pop.:1 –no joke).



12.4LEFT at fork and follow paved road uphill towards FRESNO DE CARACENA



17.3FRESNO DE CARACENA. Take first RIGHT (c/Carretera) past church and fountain and follow dirtroad up and out of town.



17.5Stay on dirt road and follow the main (big) dirt path towards QUINTANAS RUBIAS DE ARRIBA.



KmYou need to….



23.3QUINTANAS RUBIAS DE ARRIBA: Go straight through town.



24.2Road forks; keep following main (big) dirth path.



30.1Dirt path merges with the SO-P-4218; continue going straight.



31.6SO-P-4218 merges with the SO-P-4003. Turn right at indications for MONTEJO DE TIERMES.



33.4If you don’t need to go into MONTEJO DE TIERMES (water; bar at weekends), turn LEFT ontoSO135. There’s a picnic spot on the highway beside TORRESUSO.



38To visit the Roman ruins at TIERMES, turn RIGHT at the signed exit (SO-P-4120). The site isopen Tuesday to Sunday; there’s also a hotel which serves a

menú del día

if you want lunch.



38.5The pavement starts to get worse after Tiermes; once you cross the creek, turn RIGHT and followthe SO135and keep going straight until just before Tarancueña.



48.5If you don’t fancy the climb up over the hill behind TARANCUEÑA (and the construction aroundthere!) look for a “Camino Rural –40 km/h sign on the right-hand side just before you get intotown. The dirt road is sometimes used by dump trucks picking up dirt, but outside of workinghours, there shouldn’t be that much traffic.


