shapes of change
The Pike/Pine neighborhood was devastated by the demolishing of some its most beloved bars and businessestablishments. Businesses that for decades brought life to the 500 block of E.Pine. Today, all that sits thereis an empty gravel lot. Although neighborhood activists have tried to bring life back to the lot by organizingevents, it remains a barren and inhospitable place to hang out.By providing a simple intervention of sculptural plywood shapes that can serve as seating, tables, and stage, this now empty lot can again serve the community. The plywood shapes would be easy to assemble, anddisassemble when needed. This project is inspired by People’s Parking Lot [http://peoplesparkinglot.blogspot.com] and other local efforts to activate and use this vacant site in the vital Pike/Pine neighborhood. These simple elements support and encourage emerging community events on the site: street fair; swap meet;food vending; crafts vending; concerts; outdoor cinema; public gatherings; etc.The mobile furniture encourages community gathering and a sense of social ownership within the neighborhood.By working together, the community can arrange their own space to support events activities or socializing. After dark embedded LED lights activate the sculptural objects illuminating the ground plane: providing safecirculation and public use.Embedded electrical outlets power and encourage creative and entrepreneurial activities. Electricity can power:
lights; sound system; vending carts; lm projector; laptop computers, and anything else the community can
dream up.

Simple, inexpensive LED lights can be placed in holes drilled around the bottom of both the xed and mobilefurniture elements, powered by battery packs, and put on a timer. The inexpensive and efcient technology
creates a safer environment, and artfully activates the lot during our long dreary winters.Site location in the center of the Pike/Pine neighborhood.
