The Legend of the Jade Princess
A long time ago in a far away Eastern land, there lived a beautiful Princess by the
name of Chou Xien.
Her father, Chou Zhou, was a shrewd diplomat, a great military leader and a highly
accomplished practitioner of the Black Arts. He ruled with an iron fist and upheld
the old ways with prejudice above all else.
Zhou had ambitious plans to marry his daughter to the emperor of a neighbouring
nation. Wedding plans were made, but all preparations fell apart when it became
apparent that Xien was with child. To say Zhou was furious would be an
understatement.
Xien professed a celestial adoration for her lover - a common farmer named Bou Li
- but to no avail. Zhou had Li executed in front of her, along with his parents,
siblings and all of his relatives two generations distant. Xien was locked away in a
tall tower. Relations between the two potential allied nations deteriorated rapidly.
When the baby was born, it was thrown into the sea and Xien was transformed
into jade; then placed on a pedestal in the royal court.
War broke out with the neighbouring nations. While Zhou was away on campaign,
a group of city guards loyal to the Princess stole her body away and fled with haste
to the West.
Zhou had cast a curse upon any who spent too much time in the presence of the
transformed Xien, such that they too would be turned to jade over time. As they
fled West, the liberators occasionally had to leave one or more of their number
behind, thus creating a trail of jade warriors.
However, by the time the war was over, many of them had been hidden or
destroyed and even Zhou’s tremendous magical efforts could not locate the Jade
Princess. After a time, the episode was forgotten - most of the royal records
destroyed by Zhou himself.
Centuries passed, dynasties rose and fell, and the legend faded. Most scholars of
history believe the statues were broken down, cut and re-cut, and eventually
distributed throughout the world, never to be reassembled.
An interesting final twist to the legend suggests that a male-line descendent of Li
could break the spell with a single kiss, thus transforming Xien back to flesh and
blood. This is obviously totally irrelevant due to the fact that his only son was
hurled into the sea at birth and drowned.
But… what no one realises is that the infant did not perish! He was washed ashore and
found by a fisherman’s wife who raised him as her own.
The descendants of Li still walk the earth to this day…
