Abstract
The acquisition of vocabulary has long been felt to be a crucialcomponent of learning a foreign language. For young learners, the veryfirst words that they acquire could lay the profound basis for a better laterlearning of the children. Techniques for teaching vocabulary to are,therefore, the matter of concern in many studies. This study is intended toinvestigate the specific application of techniques in teaching vocabulary toyoung learners at Ila school – a language school in Hanoi. Morespecifically, the researchers strived to 1) investigate the reality currenttechniques in teaching vocabulary to young learners 2) study difficultiesthat teachers at Ila encounter when teaching young learners vocabulary andtheir suggested solutions and finally 3) propose some recommendations forteaching vocabulary at this language school.The researchers have conducted a survey with the participation of tenteachers from Ila – one of the major language schools in Hanoi. Oralinterviews, questionnaire and observation schemes were used as usefulinstruments for data collection. The questionnaire-based survey aims toscrutinize teachers’ common techniques in teaching vocabulary to younglearners, general difficulties that they meet in teaching. Oral interviews andobservations serve to elaborate on the information gathered fromquestionnaires and discover teachers’ opinions on how to solve arisenproblem in language classroom, especially during vocabulary section.The result of this study indicates that using flashcards in presenting,sorting tasks in practicing and sentence completion in revising vocabularyare three most preferably common techniques in teaching young learners
