I

PolicyDirector

People’s
Production
House.
People’s
ProductionHouse
provides
youngpeople,
immigrants,
and
low-wage
workers
with
a
comprehensiveeducation
forthe
information
age,
combiningmedia
production,
media
literacy
and
media
policy.Wework
in
public
schoolsand
withcommunity
organizationsin
all
fiveboroughs.We
support
policiesthatincreaseopportunitiesfor
members
of
the
public
to
participate
in
local
journalism.
Let
me
start
bysayingthat
this
isa
great
bill.
It
wouldcontinueNewYork
City’s
leadership
in
transparency
and
the
use
oftechnology
in
government
and
I
applaud
thisCommittee,theChair,andthe
bill’s
co-sponsors
formoving
it
forward.
I
want
to
discuss
fourareas
where
this
bill
would
have
positive
impactsonour
city
the
areas
ofjournalism,broadband
adoption,governmentefficiency,
and
quality
of
life
and
make
two
small
suggestionsforhow
it
could
go
evenfurther.Creatingopen
datastandards
is
key
to
helpingmyorganizationfulfillourmissionof
public
participation
in
journalism.
As
a
reformed
blogger
myself,
I
can
tell
you
that
access
to
governmentdocuments
in
a
timely
manner
andin
a
usefulformat
makes
it
much
easier
to
do
solid
local
reporting.
That
is
true
whether
youarean
unpaidcitizenjournalist
or
a
professionalbeatreporter
for
a
local
daily.
We
are
spoiled
in
New
York
City
with
multipledaily
papers,
but
even
so
weare
feelingtheevents
of
the
national
crisis
in
journalism.The
Sunclosed
not
toolong
ago.
Readership
at
thePost
is
in
precipitousdecline,
down
more
than
20
percent.
The
New
YorkTimesrecently
terminated
its
“City”section.
