FOREWORD
A diocesan synod is a significant event in the life of a local Church. This has beenso since the beginning of synods, going far back to the fifth century, but the 1983Code of Canon Law has given a more sharpened focus to the phenomenon. Itmade a shift of emphasis from an affair of priests to include other members of thefaithful, and also played up the potential of the diocesan synod to function as aconsultative forum in aid of legislation. Seen in the context of expandedlegislative scope given to particular churches in the Code as in the Documents of Vatican II which informed it, the diocesan synod really becomes a veritableassistance to the Diocesan Bishop in evolving and putting in place legislationthat would make the local church more responsive to the demands of evangelization and the faith in the particular circumstances of time and place. The Catholic Diocese of Nnewi, tapping into this understanding, as much as intothe particularly African image of the family, embarked on the synod projectwithin two years of its existence, and actually celebrated this momentousecclesial event in its third year. The aim was undoubtedly to provide a firmfooting to the course of the young diocese through the wide and statutoryconsultation which a synod could engender and yield. It consequently studiedand deliberated on the entire gamut of the theme and sub-themes of evangelization in all its ramifications, guided by the vision of the diocese as theFamily of God on Mission striving to make Christ live in the hearts of men andwomen through faith. The whole of the synod process is what is provided in the

It is therefore a4

record, perhaps more than a record, a lived and living experience to continuallyenergize and vitalize the people of God in the diocese in succeeding years. Apartfrom mirroring the moving moments of collective memory to those who took partin one aspect or the other of the synod, it also presents to the others who may nothave had the same privilege a vivid and as far as possible complete picture of theepochal undertaking. In that way, the fruits of the exercise will be available anduseful to everyone in every age.On another level, the synod Acts do not in any way anticipate or preempt thelegislative act which belongs to the diocesan Bishop to promulgate. Rather itserves as a background framework in the context of which the legislation will bereceived and appreciated. It is a reference and companion document. In this sensealso, the publication of the Acts mark in a way the conclusive work and closure of the assembly. For all those who desire to be informed and to benefit from the enrichingexperience that was the first diocesan synod of the Catholic Diocese of Nnewi, the Acts is hereby offered. Happy and fruitful reading!
