Hwy 5A safety corri-dor committee struck 
In the wake of a call to ban trucks fromHwy 5A, the BC Trucking Assoc., prov.gov’t, RCMP, ICBC, WorkSafeBC andTrucking Safety Council of BC have formeda corridor safety committee, in an effort tokeep trucks on the route and improve safe-ty along the highway — similar to whatwas done in the Fraser Canyon.There were 39 crashes on Hwy 5Ain2005, down to 7 for 2009. Howeverthere have already been 5 in 2010, allinvolving commercial vehicles (3involved a single commercial vehicleonly). The BCTAsays the crashes arecompletely avoidable by simply slow-ing down and driving safely. TheRCMP& the Commercial Vehicle Safety& Enforcement branch have stepped upenforcement and report a markedreduction in speeding.
Firefighters go E & N
Yesterday, BC sent an additional 157wildfire professionals and firefightingequipment to Ontario & Québec to helpwith continued & increasingly challeng-ing wildfire activity.Twenty-seven 3-person initial attack crews, 8 division supervisors, 2 fire behaviour analysts and 3 agency repre-sentatives arrived Sunday in ThunderBay for up to 19 days. They join the 81BC initial attack firefighters and 3 agencyrepresentatives already deployed there.Three 20-person unit crews, 3 task force leaders and additional firefightingequipment will arrive in Maniwaki,Qué. today. They join 130 BC personneldeployed to the area on Saturday.The Wildfire Mgt Branch also sent anaerial attack group to Alaska's Dept of Natural Resources, including an air-tanker, a birddog aircraft to guide theairtanker and an air attack officer.
