General Instructions for Using this Ebook 
This ebook outlines twelve nature study challenges for you to use along with the
Handbook of Nature Study 
by Anna Botsford Comstock. For this series of challenges, I also highly recommend readings in
Discover Nature at Sundown 
by Elizabeth Lawlor. Both books together along with some outdoor time inthe evenings each week will provide a wonderful guide to your nature study this summer. Please feelfree to complete the challenges in any order that makes sense for your family. Keep in mind the topics
for the summer and then use the opportunities that arise to enrich your family’s outdoor time.
In the perfect world you would have every subject right in front of you to personally observe. We knowthis is not possible for any of us so we will do the next best thing by preparing ourselves. We can do thepreparation work now, use whatever resources we have at our disposal and hope in the future we willuse our interest to make opportunities for close-up observations of subjects like bats and owls.
Nature Study using the
Handbook of Nature Study 
The twelve challenges included in this ebook are written in the format of the Outdoor Hour Challengesthat I write for my blog. Gathering them all together into an easy to use ebook will make it even simplerand more convenient to include nature study each week following a suggested topic.Each challenge has three parts: inside preparation work, outdoor time, and then a follow up activity. You can complete all or part of each challenge as you go along. Each challenge is written so you canadapt it to your own backyard or local area. Use the ideas as a way to get started with simple weeklynature study using the
Handbook of Nature Study 
. Children of all ages can participate in the challengesand the challenges can be done more than once, making the Outdoor Hour Challenges ideal for familieswith more than one child.
Please note the special way the Summer Series has been organized:
These challenges have been written and organized in a way that gives you some choices. For instancein Summer Series Challenge #1 there are two parts: World of Smell and Mosquitoes. These two topicscan be done separately if you wish and you can spread the challenge out over longer than a week. Another way to use the challenge is do all the Inside Preparation Work and then study mosquitoes asthe subject arises in your outdoor time and also keep up a continuous study of the smells of summer.Use each challenge in a way that makes sense for your family.Please remember that you will be successful in the challenge if you take your outdoor time with yourchildren and spend time observing your own backyard and neighborhood. This series of challengesincludes subjects that you may not have in your local area. I sincerely wish that you would do each
challenge’s preparation work for you to be equipped for future nature study. Also, make sure to check 
each challenge for suggested alternative ways to customize the challenge. Do not forget that anothergoal of this ebook is to help your family learn to use all your senses and that can be done anywhere, atanytime.
Summer Series #2Summer Tree Observations
 “The leaf is a factory; the green pulp in the leaf cells is part of the machinery; the machinery is
set in motion by sunshine power; the raw materials are taken from the air and from the sapcontaining food from the soil; the finished product is largely starch. Thus, it is well when webegin a study of the tree to notice that the leaves are so arranged as to gain all the sunlight
possible, for without sunlight the starch factories would be obliged to ‘shut down’ “.

Inside Preparation Work:
Read pages 618-620 in the
Handbook of Nature Study 
: The Parts of a Tree. For your summer tree study, make sure youread the information on these pages so you have in mind the parts of a tree: trunk or bole, head or crown, spray, andbranch. Also, make sure you have a general idea of how a tree makes its own food by reading in the section, How aTree Grows, on pages 620-622. Your job will be to relate any of this information that you think might be of interest toyour child as you study your tree.
If you have the free PDF version of the HNS, you will need to look in the Trees and Plant Life ebook, pages 240-243. If you have the free download of the entire HNS, you will need to look on pages 726-729.
Outdoor Hour Time:
 Your tree should have its leaves now and we are going to spend 10-15 minutes of your outdoor time using the ideasfrom the
Handbook of Nature Study 
to do some focused observations of your tree. Remember you may want to startusing the proper vocabulary for the parts of a tree when you are completing your tree observations.
Follow-Up Activity:
 After your outdoor time, complete a nature journal entry using the notebook page provided forthe Spring Series, a general notebook page from the sidebar of my blog,the original notebook page,or your own blank journal. Photos of your tree are a good record in your nature journal
as well. This might be a good season to press a few of the tree’s leaves for your nature

Train Your Senses
Sight: Look closely at the bark and leaves. Stand or lay under your tree and look up. Use a magnifying lens to look at the bark and leaves. Look for birds, animals, or insects in your tree. Look for all the parts of your tree: trunk,crown, branches, and spray.Smell: Smell the bark. Rub a leaf and see what it smells like.Touch: Close your eyes and feel the bark. Feel the leaf or needle from your tree and describe its texture.Hearing: Quietly sit under your tree for one minute. Can you hear the leaves or branches moving? Can you hear abird in the tree or insects buzzing near the tree?Taste: If your tree has fruit, you can choose to taste the fruit.
