Theinitial sending oj telephonecards tosomebodis
a
shot in thedark'. Yo
do
not know what type oj collectorheis, yo
do
not know what cards hehas to offer, and yo
do
not know what cards he ha
or
wants. This is compounded when sending mail to places like China ,where themail sorters and carriers may only hav
a
rudimentary grasp oj English languagewriting. Doesyour letter really have
a
chance oj beingdeliveredMy address is in Georgetown, Cayman Islands. An appreciable amount oj my phonecard mail Jirst makes
a
trip toGeorgetow,Guyana, wherethepostal workers (bless them) careJully stamp the packagmis-sent to Guyana and then send it on to thCayman Islands .See how easy it isJor mail to gastray? Threeoj thelettersI havemailed and whereI havnot received replies were sent to China, Cuba anAlbania ,all places with lowper capita incomes(hocanthey afford thepostage?)andprobably unreliable mail service.I treat myfirst contact with
a
collector in another country
asa
trial. I will sendbetween
6
an
12
cards with
a
letter outlining my collectinghabits and what can offer Jor Juture exchanges. The cards I seninitially areALLcards that I canafford tolos, and are all cards that I haveJound intelephoneboxes.Myonly outlay is thecostoj thepostage .if I get noreply ,Ipu thelossdown toexperience.if I get an unsatisJactory set oj cards back then I have theoption oj continuino exchange ,
or
most likely I will terminate threlationship.I normally restrict mycorrespondencetooneperson per country. This minimises the number oj duplicate cards I receive.
do
not proVide
a

a
Jellow collectorI will give him
a
list oj the cards I already haveJrom his country ,and leave it up to him to proVid

with different cards .I receivetwo types oj wants listsJrom collectors.OneJromobViouslykeenand dedicated collectorsarfor someoj the harder an

a
matter for negotiation ,

cards oj similar worth .I have receivedsomepretty exotic wants lists Jrompeoplewho ar obViously trying it otoget rare  cardsJor next tonothin.Thefinal criterion in exchanges is where you arsending cardsJrom, and how rare are the cards thayou are offering. Most collectorsspecifYthat they will exchangeon
a

and are sending away six to ten commonBT  cards you areprobably oneof severalpeoplesending BT cards. Youshould no
be
too surprised that thperson you are Writing todoesnot take you and your wants list tooriously.Start the relationship slowly, clearly statinwhat you havetooffeand clearly stating what yowould like to receiveand what yo
DO

a
relationship with
a
person in
a
specific country I want to keep that relationship exclUSive ,
so
that hewants all oj thecards that comintomypossessionand that heinturn will sen

Thanks forsuch adetailed explanation. Youseemto have set upafirmpolicy on swapping.A couple of comments regarding the use oEnglish on envelopes: English is an officiallanguage of the Universal Postal Union, to whichalmost allpostal services belong, andthere shouldalways be someone in a sorting office whounderstands it. In the case of China, which youmention, (andwhere, bythe way, the post is veryefficient) Iamtold that it is much better to writein English than in transliterated Chinese (Pinyin)- as English is more
lil~ely
to be understood bypostal workers!
Dear Editor,
I have read with great interest the comments published about thehazards oj swapping phonecardwith correspondentswhoeithe
do
notrespond
or
whadvertise themselves to exchange and then chea
or
stealJrom thosewho reply .Without
a
doubt ,thereare many cheats and thieves about and collectors are beginning to take matters into their own hands bproducing lists oj namesandaddressesoj suchpeople and circulating them Widely. I have been doing thsame in myprice-lists -but only printing details thahavebeenverified andproven to
be
true.What iscausing
me
great concernismany oj these 'cheater
or
swindler' lists areincludingpeoplewhoare not in that category .For example ,I havejust receive
a
letterJrom Australia Jro
a
collector who includesuch
a
list with
a
well-known dealer beingdescribe
as"a
thieJ,
a
crook an
a
liar", From my personaexperienceoj themaninquestion ,this couldhardly
