GRAND KNIGHTS MESSAGE

My Brothers All,
We are now official officers of the K of C. The
installation went well and it was a very moving experience.

In service
to one.
In service
to all.

I would like to thank the Worthy District Deputy and

his District Wardens for an excellent ceremony. We had a
number of dignitaries attend and we thank them for their
support.
The Council is in dire need of funds. Our checking
account balance is very low.
We must put a strong push selling C & B books so
we will have money to pay our bills. My brothers you are
our only source to generate funds. Please volunteer to sell
C & B books.
If you attend the social please help out wherever you can.
Many hands make light work.
May God bless you and your families,

S.K. Frederick S. Hess

A Prophetic Flame of Charity

The ongoing work of the Order testifies to the laitys vocation and mission in the Church
THIS PAST JUNE, I had the privilege of attending the 28th plenary assembly of the Pontifical Council for the Laity. I had been appointed
a member of the council by Pope John Paul II and reappointed by Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis.
At the start of the meeting, the president of the council, Cardinal Stanisaw Ryko, observed that Pope Francis recently reminded us of a phrase
that was popular following the Second Vatican Council: The hour of the laity has come. But then, the pope added, it seems that the clock has
stopped.
In his direct and often provocative way, the Holy Father was raising the issue of whether the laity today lives up to its vocation and mission in the
Church. He went on to say that the laity is called to many initiatives exhibiting the necessary boldness to enable the Good News of the Gospel
to be brought to all areas of the social and, above all, political sphere.
Pope Francis rejects a view that minimizes the role of the laity and gradually extinguishes the prophetic flame to which the entire Church is
called to bear witness.
Obviously, there is much here for us to think about. But the first thing we may say is that the clock has not stopped for the Knights of
Columbus. To the contrary, as the worlds premier organization of Catholic men, we are in many ways ahead of time.
That is to say, we continue to hold high the prophetic flame to which Catholics are called to bear witness.
Our efforts to protect religious liberty and end the scourge of Christian genocide have already achieved important results, not only in
the courts but also in the U.S. Congress and the State Department. And we have become a leader in providing direct aid to and raising awareness about persecuted Christian refugees in the Middle East.
Each year, our councils undertake many thousands of locally inspired programs at the parish level, making life better for millions of
people. And all of this is the legacy of our founder, Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney, whose spiritual genius inspired generations of Catholic men to step forward with courage to confront the challenges of their day by living out the principles of charity, unity
and fraternity in a distinctly Catholic way.
The prophetic flame that Pope Francis speaks about continues to burn bright in the hearts of our brother Knights around the world.
That flame ignites in them a true sense of Catholic charity a charity that evangelizes and that brings, in a very concrete way, a light
to the nations.

District Deputys Message

Brothers and Sisters,

Well the last warm breezes of summer are sweeping across Long Island and soon it will time to put away the Lawn Mowers
and brake out those rakes! Autumn is upon us and the leaves are beginning to turn and fall. And with the change of the seasons
comes a change in the direction of our Council activates. Gone are the carefree days of picnics and ballgames, and ahead are the
serious tasks ( I hope ) of Membership Drives and C & B sales. But its not all hard work! We can still have some fun by setting up
and ordering your Soccer Challenge kits!
Speaking of Membership Drives, we should all be talking to our Pastors about getting into the Churches and setting up our
Church Membership Drives! Remember, October is Membership Drive Blitz Month!
Our 2016 C & B Drive is also well underway. I know that every Council has received C & B books and you should be out
there selling them by now. There are many different and creative ways to get involved with selling C & B, from spaghetti dinners, to
Night at the Races, to just the old fashioned way of setting up a card table at the corner store. Its a great way to bring easy money
into the Council.
Please save the following Dates: on October 15th there will be a Spaghetti Dinner for John Joseph to raise money for the
Suffolk Conference. Also on November 5th the Suffolk Board of DDs will be holding a Night at the Races to help raise money as
well.
Your Grand Knight has all of the details on these two events, or feel free to contact me if you need assistance.
Thank you all for everything that you do for our Order.
Vivat Jesus

Jesus Prays
The Gospel according to St. Luke emphasizes the action of the Holy Spirit and the meaning of prayer in Christ's ministry.
Jesus prays before the decisive moments of his mission: before his Father's witness to him during his baptism and
Transfiguration, and before his own fulfillment of the Father's
plan of love by his Passion.

"He was praying in a certain place and when he had

ceased, one of his disciples said to him, 'Lord, teach us to pray."'
In seeing the Master at prayer the disciple of Christ also wants to
pray. By contemplating and hearing the Son, the master of prayer, the children learn to pray to the Father.
The Our Father:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us
this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we
forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

He also prays before the decisive moments involving

the mission of his apostles: at his election and call of the Twelve,
before Peter's confession of him as "the Christ of God," and
again that the faith of the chief of the Apostles may not fail when
tempted.

Prayer for the Canonization of Father Michael J. McGivney

God, our Father, protector of the poor and
defender of the widow and orphan, you called
your priest, Father Michael J. McGivney, to be
an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the
young to the generous service of their neighbor.
Through the example of his life and virtue may
we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely,
fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church. Let the
inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your
love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and
the outcast.
We humbly ask that you glorify your servant Father Michael J.
McGivney on earth according to the design of your holy will.
Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present (here make
your request). Through Christ our Lord. Amen. Our Father, Hail
Mary, Glory be.
