SEPTEMBER, 2009REFLECTIONToday let’s visit a few Scripturesand identify an absolutelyglorious gift and reality in ourChristian lives. This is prettyamazing stuff! First, we go tothe Book of Revelation, Chapter1, in which John describes hisvision of Jesus. Here it is:
“I turned to see whose voice it was that spoke to me, and onturning I saw seven goldenlampstands, and in the midst of the lampstands I saw one like the Son of Man, clothed with a long robe and with a golden sashacross his chest. His head and his hair were white as white wool, white as snow; his eyes were likea flame of fire, his feet were likeburnished bronze, refined as in a furnace, and his voice was likethe sound of many waters. In hisright hand he held seven stars, and from his mouth came a sharptwo-edged sword, and his facewas like the sun shining with full  force. When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he placed his right hand on me, saying, ‘Do not be afraid; I amthe first and the last, and theliving one. I was dead, and see, I am alive for ever and ever; and I hold the keys of Death and of  Hades.’”
This, by God’s revelation, is anaccurate and perfect descriptionof Jesus Christ as He is rightnow in heaven. He is not like theJesus we are used to imaginingas when He walked this earth, oreven after the Resurrection; andit is even more glorious adescription than on the Mount of the Transfiguration. When weappear before the Throne of Godupon our death, this is the Jesuswe will behold, along with theall-Glorious Father and HolySpirit. In other words, this is amagnificent description of Godthe Son, the Second Person of

the Trinity, the Great HighPriest at the right hand of theFather. Now, dwelling on that, it couldcause us some trepidation; whoare we before such an all-HolyGod? It could cause us somehesitation in approaching Him,because He is so awesome. As amatter of fact, this is exactly oneof Satan’s strategies, to convinceus that we in no way canapproach God. So, keep thisdescription of Jesus Christ, theKing of Kings and Lord of Lords, in mind as we turn to twoother Scriptures. On the night before He died, inJohn’s Gospel we find a long andbeautiful monologue, directed byJesus to the apostles, but also tous, since the Word of God isliving and true. In Chapter 15,after Jesus told them and us thatHe is the vine and we are thebranches and that we cannotbear fruit apart from him, Hehas these incredible words:
“This is my commandment, that  you love one another as I haveloved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’slife for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command  you. I do not call you servantsany longer, because the servant does not know what the master isdoing; but I have called you friends, because I have madeknown to you everything I haveheard from my Father. You did not choose me but I chose you.”
In Matthew’s Gospel, Chapter26, in the Garden of Gethsemane, Judas led theRoman soldiers to the placewhere Jesus was praying. Hewent up to Jesus and, as a pre-arranged signal, said,
“Greetings, Rabbi!”
and kissedhim. Jesus replied,
“Friend, dowhat you are here to do.”
Nowthis tells me that Judas waspresent when Jesus called Hisapostles friends! Think about it:The Lord Jesus, knowing whatwas coming, called His closestassociates “friends,” even thoughHe knew that one would betrayHim, one would deny Him, andall the others except John wouldrun away. Some friends! ButJesus meant it, and, of course,Judas was replaced and all theapostles went out to spread theGood News about Jesus after HisAscension into heaven. So, here is the key point in all of this: Jesus knew that they weresinners and that they would hurtHim terribly; but He still calledthem His friends. Jesus knowsthat we are sinners and we haveall hurt Him terribly; butbecause we have accepted Himas Lord, become Christians and

are His followers, He still calls usHis friends with His outpouringof love and mercy – whenever werepent. This glorious Jesus, Godin Resurrected Flesh, in and of Himself unapproachable by anycreature, invites us to be Hisfriends, to share His own life andthat of the Father and the HolySpirit, now and for all eternity. There is no life greater and morefulfilling than the committedChristian life!ON THE LIGHTER SIDE
A man visited his dear Chinese friendin the hospital. “Li kai yang qi guan,”the sick man said feebly. The manwanted to help him, but he did notunderstand Mandarin. “Li kai yangqi guan!” the patient said, as hebreathed his last. Later that year, theman was in Shangai when he finallylearned the meaning of “Li kai yang qiguan:” “Get off my oxygen tube!”…Some Native Americans asked theirnew chief whether the winter would becold or mild. Since the young chief never learned the ways of hisancestors, he told them to go andcollect firewood, and he called theNational Weather Service. “Will thewinter be bad?” he asked. “Looks likeit,” was the answer. So the chief toldhis people to gather more firewood. Aweek later, he called again. “Are youpositive the winter will be cold?”“Absolutely.” The chief told hispeople to gather even more firewood, and then he called the NationalWeather Service again. “Are yousure?” “I’m telling you, it’s going tobe the coldest winter on record.”“How do you know?” “Because theNative Americans are gathering woodlike crazy.”…Joe, Mike, Mary andTom were talking about their dream jobs. “I want to be a lawyer,” Joebegan, so that I can defend mycountrymen.” “I want to be acongressman,” Mike said, “so I candraft laws to benefit my countrymen.”“I want to be a doctor,” said Mary,“so that I can cure my countrymen.”“How about you, Tom? What wouldyou like to be?” Tom thought for amoment and replied, “I’d like to be acountryman.”
