Abstract
PEACE WOMEN IN CYBERSPACE:
The use of computer-mediated communication in gendered peace building efforts.

RESEARCH TOPIC: The use of computer-mediated communication in gendered peace building efforts focused on the 1000 Women for the Nobel Peace Prize 2005 project. The study analyses
the temporal structure of the project, the group purpose of the concerned team, the external context and the technical system infrastructure of their virtual interaction, the personal context of the team-members and the choice of shared virtual or non-virtual (public) sphere of communication.

INVESTIGATION AND RESULTS Analysing interviews with coordinating women as well as newsletters and online information of the www.1000peacewomen.org has been the source for the investigation. Here are few selected findings about how peace women constitute global networking in virtual space:
1• Computer mediated communication in the community of the coordinating team means above all "e-mailing". The coordinating women constitute their virtual networking not on any kind of corporate or shared platform but in addition to traditional forms of meetings and conferences.
2• In the process of searching for nominations in the different regions, e-mail was useful but mostly "not enough" to get to the grass root-organisations and the peace women on the sub-national level. To reach the organizational goals the personal contacts, acquaintances and face to face communication counts most and is clearly related to specific cultural backgrounds.
1• To use the internet as a source of information is common among the coordinating women, using it for interactive cooperation and collaboration (despite e-mailing) depends on the cultural setting and other factors like national state of democratic development or the asymmetric economic opportunities concerning internet access itself.
2• To handle open conflicts or life in a daily situation of violence or war, makes it difficult, to be present online or connected in any way. Especially for the political south, but also recognizes in marginalized area of highly developed countries computer mediated communication is not even an option–- and not only because of worsening infrastructure.
3• The diversity of languages, cultural, ideological and personal settings was not seen as grave barriers of virtual interaction by the peace women. Mainly the basic economic determinants of the global digital divide, especially the lack of resources are rated to cause informational restrictions in general.

CONCLUSION Virtual collaboration and cooperation in a team containing these specific factors of diversity have to follow the principal of lowest level of technical conditions and lowest necessity of resources in order to bring computer-mediated communication down to a common denominator for all participants of the group. Virtual presence and any kind of website is an important vehicle for public relations. Information, publicity and virtual communication makes the achievements of peace women sustainable visible. The use of Small-media software and application for collaborative working groups like WIKIs and Web logs could be helpful, if distributed under Open Source, Common License or GNU.
The ability of bringing together traditional, regional and digital networks of peace building seems to be the real attainment of the 1000peacewomen´s internet based communication. The women campaigning the project are spreading the global network-communication from digital space to traditional networks of gendered peace interests. By doing that they overcome social hierarchy and empower dynamic structures for peace action and the realization of democratic gender relations and create a alternative public sphere for their interests and aims.
