Any formation that begins with "Right" will automatically put us under center. In most cases it will allow us
to get into a two back set with three receivers. We can then designate the backfield alignment by tagging
the formation with the following: "I" - "Flip" - "Strong" - "Weak" - "Tight" - etc... And, any combination of
these tags will add additional flexibility in our alignments. For instance, we could call Right/ I, Tight and
then the play. Being able to go under center will be necessary from time to time and especially at the lower
levels.

Shoot - Sprint for width immediately. Target the numbers at a depth of 3 yards. Expect
the ball quickly from the QB. As soon as you cross the LOS get your head turned
back.
Angle - Make it look like shoot until 3 yards outside the PST. Plant outside foot and break
to open area over the PSG. Expect ball quickly. Get head turned on break.
Swing - Steal 2nd base. Do not belly. Sprint for width. Get head turned after 5th step.
Stay on path to sideline and let the QB lead you upfield.
Slip - Step into "B" gap as if on pass protection. Work to depth of 3-4 yards and break
outside. Stay flat and under coverage.
Option - Release outside the PST to a depth of 3-4 yards. Break in or out based on leverage
of first defender. Stay flat and work to open window versus zone and run versus
man.
Cross - Same as Slip but break across the formation at a depth of 3-4 yards. Expect ball over
the opposite tackle area.

Skinny - Sprint to close the cushion with the DB. Slide step inside and press vertically. Be
aware of a 2-high or 1-high safety look for how far inside you can go. Keep separation
from the CB and maintain the greatest possible window between you and the nearest
safety. Expect the ball in the window.
Post / Corner - Break post at 8-10 yards for 3-steps. Plant inside toe and break the corner
route at a 45 degree angle. QB will put the ball in the hole.
Go - Sprint to close the cushion with the DB. Shoulder lean inside to bump DB. Slide step
outside and look for ball over outside shoulder. QB key to throw is when receiver is
even with the DB. Adjust your alignment to allow room to throw the ball to the sideline.
Post - Stick outside toe at 8 yards. Break post to middle of a 2-high safety look. Break to
middle of goal post versus a 1-high safety look.
Comeback - Run the "Go" route and break the comeback at 12-14 yards back to 10-12 yards
Expect the ball at the sideline.
Snap - Run a 3-step slant and press inside for 3-5 steps. Stick outside toe and snap back to
the outside. Stay flat on your snap.

Bob 8/9 Variations
The wrap play is central to our running game. By tagging the run with different calls, we can
give the appearance of being multiple yet maintain the same blocking scheme. Tagging the
wrap play with "1" tells the QB that he is now the ball carrier. It also tells the QB and R-back
that we will run counter action with the play. In other words, the R-back will fake the wrap to
one side and the QB will keep the ball and run the wrap opposite. We can "Lead" out of this
play from a two-back formation such as Pro., or from a one-back we can "Lead" with R and
have the QB run the ball. Any of these plays can be motioned into with "Back" motion.
"Back" motion tells the tagged receiver that he will motion to the second running back
position in the backfield. We will time this up with our cadence.

The "Wrap" play can also hit in "A" gap depending on direction. We want to always be "right"
when this play is called, so it is important that the OGs make the appropriate "In" or "Out" call to
tell both the BSG where to wrap and the ball carrier where to run. A "Check" call will always tell
our QB to run Bob to the shade nose. If no "Check" call is sent in, then we want to run it to the
direction called, whether it hits "A" gap or "B" gap. Any and all formations and motions can be
used.

Bob "Trap" 8/9 Variations
The "Trap" call it basically a tag that changes the blocking scheme at the LOS. It is designed
as a compliment to Bob that takes advantage of DEs that "get up the field" on a pass rush.
Since hard charging DEs are something we want, we need variety in the way we attack them.
The "Trap" can be run by the QB with counter action or to any motion back from Empty. When
two backs are aligned in the backfield, we will add an option pitch look to the play.

Lion 8/9 Variations
We will run Lion from any and all formations. We can run from two-back and Empty. "Back"
motion is important to assure a change-up in our look. We can also adjust the perimeter
blocking to a "crack" call if we are getting too much pursuit from the inside. "Leopard" will
be our call when we wish to "load" the option and block the EMLOS. In order to "load," we
must align in a two-back formation or motion to one. The keep/pitch key will now become the
force defender, or the second man from the outside.

4 ft. Splits
Inside leg of OT
** All inside runs such as Desert and Bob will require maximum splits of 4 feet. If we have to move our
splits in, we will. We want to stretch the defensive front as much as possible when running inside. All
pass plays will require maximum splits, as well. This will help clear up the "box" reads for our OL and
create great passing lanes for the QB. This will put each of our O-Lineman on an island for pass
protection. We will have to technique this repeatedly in practice.
** All outside runs such as Fly, Rat, Zoom, and Lion will require minimum splits of 18 inches. This will
shorten the distance to "D" gap for our play. There will be cases where we have to "Check" to an
inside or outside run. In this case, we will adjust our splits prior to the play, if possible.
** When the QB is under center, we will be in a three point stance. When in shotgun, we will be in a
two point stance. If there is a situation where a particular O-Lineman is much more comfortable from
one or the other, he may choose or the coach may choose his type of stance.

Points to edge blitzer
With the pass protection set to the left, the Center or LG will be your uncovered lineman that is
responsible for a double read on the ILB and OLB. He will always check ILB first, as he is pass setting
to get out the back door to the OLB. If the ILB comes, he picks him up in whichever gap he attacks. If
the ILB does not come, the Center's head must be on a swivel to the edge blitz of the OLB. Prior to
this, the uncovered OL will get a call from the LT of "soft/hard" to indicate to the uncovered lineman
how serious the threat of an outside blitz is. This will help deteremine how flat the uncovered lineman
must come out in order to pick up the edge blitz. If the ILB does not come, and he gets a "soft" call (he
still must visually check the edge blitzer), he can help inside with the OG.
We will also blitz control the left/right edge blitzer with our WR. The inside receiver to each side will
always point out to our QB a possible edge blitzer. If he blitzes in normal down and distance, our
receiver will come off his route and run a "hot" route (usually a 45 degree step to the outside and get
numbers to the QB). We also control the middle blitz with a replace route by the inside receiver to the
blitz side. However, most of our routes have a blitz beater built in with someone running through the
middle of the field at LB depth.
The RB essentially has the same responsibility. Check ILB to his side and block in whichever gap he
attacks. If ILB does not come, flare release or run route called. RB must step up into the hole to block
the blitzing ILB.
In this scheme, we can account for six rushers. The QB is responsible for #7, which is usually the OLB
to his right (naturally in his line of sight).
3-Step Pass Pro Cont.
S S
C M
B "Nasty" call
C
E T N E B
When faced with a gapped defender and the possibility of a hard edge blitz, our OT will make a "Nasty"
call to indicate to the R-back that he will now block the EMLOS or edge blitzer. A "Nasty" call by the RT
will require the RG to aggressively down block as well. Remember, our wide splits will negate most
edge rushers, so we must set our protection from the inside/out. Anytime we get the threat of gapped
defenders to both sides, we will "Check" to middle screen (Rain) or option (Lion) NOW!! Even a situation
where a defense overloads only one side of our pass pro, we can check to middle screen to that side.
Note: The defense can always bring one more than we can protect against. It is vital that our QB knows
who the unblocked defender will likely be. The QB can always bring the F-back into the backfield for
maximum protection. This should only be done if we are throwing to the outside 1/3 of the field.
Bringing F into the back field into Pro formation will also bring one more defender into or near the box.

game. Anytime the force defender aligns closer to the “box” in order to defend the run,
we should check Oscar. Oscar is also part of our Washington/Carolina package for
hitting deeper routes based on the reaction of coverage.

Great complimentary play for Y-Stick (Yankee). This is another way to get a “smash”
route on the outside 1/3 of coverage. Great for attacking a C#2 with the “up” tag for Z or
X by creating a scissor type route.

** The quick screen should be run to the uncovered receiver. The number one or
two receiver to call-side that is not uncovered, should block man-on. The R-back
should align to call-side and sprint a path that intersects the uncovered receiver
and the defender over him. PST should deep pass set and draw the EMLOS up-
field. The PSG should take a flat path that intersects the uncovered receiver and
the defender over him. If the R-back has secured the block, the PSG should turn
inside looking for the the Safety or any ILB on pursuit. Nice play from trips, as
the # 2 receiver is usually left uncovered.

Expectations:
1. Catch everything you get two hands on.
2. Know the difference between Man/Zone for route adjustments and blocking.
3. Recognize a one-high or two-high safety for route adjustment and blocking.
4. Know the QB's read and progression.
5. Be the best blocker on the field. If you cannot block, you cannot play.
6. Run precise routes. (Do the little things)
7. Be unselfish
Routes
"Hitch" 5
WR - Push upfield to 5 yards and tight turn to the inside - pivot on outside foot
QB - Outside arm (away from underneath coverage)
"Fade"
WR - Push upfield to 12 yards planting inside foot and turning back to the outside
at 45 degree angle to 10 yards. Make it feel like fade.
QB - Outside arm (throw to a point at 10 yards)
C.P. - If DB's back is turned to the ball, give hand for fade and break. If DB is
deep, look him in the eyes and break at 12 yards. Eyes must be up - not at cut
area.
"Slant"
** Throttle down and find open window -vs- zone / sprint away
from man coverage.
WR - Push upfield to 4 yards. Head fake and stick tht toe of your outside foot
breaking at 45 degree angle back inside. Break is full speed, then throttle down
after 3rd step. Expect ball around 8-10 yards. If one-step slant is the route, then
your main objective is to beat the defender over you to the inside. Expect the ball
quickly. Run versus man and settle versus zone.
QB - WR's numbers (miss low, not high)
C.P. - Have to get DB turned when in Man. Hand on hip and push by. Rip outside
hand. Run flatter -vs- Man.
"Skinny"
WR - Push upfield threatening the outside shoulder of defender. Once you feel
you can gain inside leverage, shoulder lean outside and stick toe. Slide step
inside and press vertically, keeping DB to outside. Do not float inside to safety.
QB - Upfield shoulder. Hit between DB and FS. Keep ball to the outside and do
not lead the WR into FS.
"Speed Out"
6
5
4
WR - Same path as speed out. Look back to QB and show hands. Turn upfield
at the bottom of the numbers.
QB - Outside shoulder
C.P. - Cheat out on alignment. QB hold ball to determine coverage. Throw ball at
20-25 yards. Keep defender on inside shoulder and allow room to sideline for QB
to bail you out.
"Corner"
WR - Push upfield to 8 yards. Slide step to inside and stick toe of inside foot.
Break hard and explode to corner. Adjust path to number of safeties. One
safety, break at 45 degrees - two safeties, break flatter and over the CB.
QB - Bring reciever back toward sideline according to how deep DB is.
C.P. - vs. man, must have fakes - 20-25 yards. vs. zone, head fake and go.
- vs. zone, beat them up and over. Miss long and deep.
**Great check versus man
"Post / Corner"
WR - Push upfield to 8 yards and stick post route for three steps. Stick toe of
inside foot and break the corner route.
QB - Shoulder fake the post and reset. Put air under the ball and miss wide and
deep.
** Great check to single-receiver side versus man or zone.
"Option"
WR - Push upfield to 6-8 yards and stick inside/outside foot based on leverage
of defender. Break inside/outside 2-3 steps hard and let QB lead you away
from coverage. Inside receiver should break at 6 yards. Outside receiver
should break at 8 yards.
QB - Inside or outside shoulder (lead away from closest defender)
C.P. - vs man, sprint inside/outside away from defender
- vs zone, find open window and sit
"Cross"
WR - Push inside flat to avoid getting jammed on the LOS. Target a depth of 3-5
yards over opposite tackle. Do not settle versus zone. Turn head to QB when
you reach the tackle area and expect the ball.
QB - Lead shoulder. (look off and comeback to cross with soft pass)
C.P. - Depth of receiver must be under the LBs. He must not get jammed.
"Curl"
WR - Push upfield to 8-10 yards. Stick toe of outside foot and turn back to QB.
Set up one yard inside the flat defender. Find the window and sit.
QB - Shoulder away from nearest defender.
C.P. - This is an adjusting route for reciever. Must understand zone windows.
vs man, stay flat and turn into a "dig" route.
