Part A. ( 40 minutes for the entire group)
1. Reading Comprehension ( 30 marks)
 
Two separate passages on scientific/technical themes to be given .
 
There will be 5 testing items ( either MCQs or T/F or Cloze type) under each text.(5x 2 = 10 testing items each carrying 3 marks)
 
6 such sets will be sent to the respective colleges during the practicals.
 
Alternate sets to be allotted to students during testing.
2. Error correction (10 marks)
 
10 items ,covering all the specified areas, will be given
 
Sentences will have five segments (A,B,C,D,E) with E necessarily standing for ‘NOError’
 
Alternate sets to be allotted to students during testing.
3. Vocabulary Testing ( 20 marks)
 
10 words to be tested
 
The most exact synonym to be selected out of the five given alternatives.
 
Each item carries 2 marks
 
Alternate sets to be allotted to students during testing.
Part B.
1. Stress shift (10 marks)
 
Every student should be tested individually.
 
Students should be given 5 sentences(in print)each containing a pair of words with stressshift(E.g.
One can be generous but one should not become a bankrupt doe to his generosity)
 
Time allowed – 1 minute per student
 
Marking to synchronise with testing.
2. Group Discussion (30 marks)
 
Each group to contain 10 to 12 students
 
 
The topic of discussion to be allotted by the examiner. ( To be selected from the given list)
GD Topics
1. Advertising is a legalized form of lying- Discuss.2. Impact of the media and internet on modern youth.3. Communicative competency in English is the golden key for success in the Globalarena.4. PROCEDURES FOR THE CONDUCT OF THE PRACTICALSStep I:
 
The test in
Part A
should be conducted first for all the students, preferably in asingle big hall under the strict supervision of the examiner.
 
The duration of the test is 40 minutes.
 
Every group of students (50 – 72) should be tested with any two question sets.Alternate sets to be allotted to students during testing to avoid copying.
 
The students should be instructed not to write anything on the Question Paper as theymay have to be used for other groups too.
 
The students should enter their responses in the
Response Coding Sheet
only.
 
The RCS and the QP should be collected at the end of the test.
Step II:
 
Then, the students should be divided into groups ( 10 to 12) for Group Discussion preferably according to their Register numbers.
