wasthe42nd President of the United Statesfrom 1993 to 2001. At 46 he was thethird-youngest   president. He became president at the end of theCold War , and is known as the first baby   boomer president.
His wife,Hillary Rodham Clinton, is currently theUnited States Secretary  of State. She was previously aUnited States Senator from New York, and also candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in2008. Both are graduates of Yale Law School. Clinton has been described as a New Democrat,
and his policies, on issues such as the North American Free Trade Agreementandwelfare reform, have been described as being apart of his centristThird Wayphilosophy of governance.
 
Clinton presided over the continuation fromthe previous administration of an economic expansion that would later become the longest periodof peace-time economic expansion in American history. The Congressional Budget Officereported a budget surplus of $236 billion in 2000, the last full year of Clinton's presidency.
After a failed attempt athealth care reform,Republicans won controlof theHouse of   Representativesfor the first time in forty years.
Two years later, in 1996, Clinton was re-elected and became the first member of the Democratic Party sinceFranklin D. Rooseveltto wina second full term as president.
Later he wasimpeachedfor  perjury,obstruction of justiceand of high crimes and misdemeanorsin connection with ascandal involving a White House intern,  but was subsequently acquitted by theU.S. Senate.
 
Clinton left office with anapproval ratingat 66%, the highest end of office rating of any president since World War II.
Since then, he has been involved in public speaking andhumanitarian work. Clinton created theWilliam J. Clinton Foundationto promote and addressinternational causes such as treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDSandglobal warming. In 2004, he released his autobiography
, and was involved in his wife Hillary's2008  presidential campaignand subsequently in that of PresidentBarack Obama. In 2009, he was namedUnited Nations Special EnvoytoHaiti.
In the aftermath of the2010 Haiti earthquake,Clinton teamed withGeorge W. Bushto form theClinton Bush Haiti Fund.
