Description

This is a review essay on Stewart Elliot Guthrie's book, "Faces in the Clouds." This impressive book deals with the uncanny ability of human minds to seek for and find meaningful patterns everywhere, including places they really don't exist. For instance, when we do see faces in the clouds. Guthrie (and I) believe that this facility with pattern led (in very ancient times) to the development of human religious belief.

Of course we agree, the only difference is our words (metaphors). Language is the "output" resulting from the "input" of the world. It is important to recognize that language's descriptions are judged by their usefulness, and this applies whether we are speaking in poetic metaphors or scientific. Thank you for paying attention to my ramblings. Bill

Kenosis23 Thanks for your kind words. Our brains are wired to abstract and simplify very complex Reality. Perhaps metaphors are a good metaphorical way of thinking of that process.

It is my suspicion that language, myth, religion, science, mathematics, etc,, are different manifestations of the same human trait, that of metaphorical thinking. In this interpretation, everyday language consists of metaphors so buried that we have forgotten that they are metaphors. If we were to see the world with out these metaphors, I don't know what we would be but it wouldn't be "human." Thank you for the picture you drew in my mind! :-)
